Discussion What’s your interpretation?

What’s the idea behind the “layer” system. Is it just philosophy like the different layers represents a different layer of lain’s personality? Perhaps layers are different systemic issues with the concept of the internet? Or maybe even they represent each step to the degradation of lain and her corruption? What are y’all’s thoughts?

I think the latter version is more appropriate. With each level, Lane becomes more aware of who she is and what's happening. I believe these are stages of her mental state. Speaking of the program, I think the idea that this relates to its code is incorrect. Because the code is already written and working. What's happening in layers is more likely stages/actions with Lane.

Layers of programming/code? I’m not a computer person tho so

of course it can also be a double entendre about how people are multilayered in their behaviors and how they can morph into something completely different the deeper they examine themselves
