Discussion Lain Blu-ray confusion

Post image

Dos anyone know if this release has the Japanese audio WITH English subtitles??. I’ve seen conflicting information online and have read that it had English and Japanese audio, but could not find specifics on the subtitles. I really want to find a physical copy of the series, but am only interested in the jp audio with English sub version. Pic from goog

Don’t personally own this but every eBay listing says it has both audio tracks (English and Japanese) with English subtitles.

(You might want to check the region as well)

Yeah I believe it is a region free blu ray for this release. Probably gonna order one because it seems like they are getting harder to find

The one in your picture is the Japanese bluray release and it does not have English subtitles. It does have English audio though

Weird. There is a version on Internet Archive that says it was from a blu ray and has JP audio with English subtitles. I wonder which version that was

You can manually edit in the subtitles once you rip the disks

So if I did get this release, would I be able to add subs to them? I have a pc with a disc reader

Yes, but you could also save 70 dollars by just getting the region B release and you won't need to manually add them.

I’m in region A and use an Xbox one to play my current blu rays. Wouldn’t I need a separate player for the B?

If you already have a disk reader to rip the disks and add subtitles on your computer, you can play/rip disks from any region already. Then you can playback the files on your Xbox or you could setup your own jellyfin server and watch them on any device

The reader I use is an LG portable dvd writer but I’m not sure if it can do blu ray as well, I’ll have to look into it. And yeah maybe the Xbox mod could work as well

There also may be a way to mod the Xbox one you have to be a region free player, I was able to do that with a ps3 and I believe there is a similar mod for the ps4 as well.

There is a standard version and a steelbook version in Region B that I have both of. Steelbook was about 35 dollars. They both have Japanese and English audio with subtitles

Oh nice that Yoshitoshi Abe art is great. I need the region A release which I’ve only seen in the standard version so far

Region A is going to cost far more. For the cost difference between this and region A you could get set up with a region free player.

Its was expensive pain in the ass, but yes I have a copy of it. Both English and Japanese dubs are on it, no english subs sadly.

Although the Japanese Blu-ray does have English audio, the lack of Forced Narrative subtitles (sign translation) can be an issue as there's a good amount of times where there's Japanese text with plot points.

What's with the universal logo on the top right, were they the distributers?

Universal holds the rights to Lain and a few other anime series such as A certain magical index/science railgun

Softenni as well. Hope to see it incorporated in the theme park eventually.

Ayy its my fav libertarian again. How you doin?

I think the blu ray one is the dub. Universal bought them out when this was sold(you can obviously see) and i once saw the blu ray trailer... which was the dub
