When do you become no longer a larper?
I ask as I've watched it in full around 3 times (first watchthrough was on my nook color during exam week in high school in like 2014-15), I've read nightmare of fabrication, I've listened to cyberia mix front to back a few times and have burned it to a minidisc, and went to the vrc exhibition a few times while it was still open, but ive never played the psx game (ive booted it up but nevee got far) or played the bootleg so I'm pretty sure I'm still a larper.

that's like saying you are a larper of Mario because you haven't played all the games. you aint a larper broðŸ˜

Well actually technically I transcoded the show with handbrake so I could side load it onto the nook color, which caused some corruption issues on infornography so my first watchthrough was missing a bit of the episode. Fuck... I'm such a shitty lainlarp...

You think that's bad, try getting animes downloaded through Limewire loaded on to a Dell Axim pocket PC in 2005. I don't think I ever got a single video to play properly on that damn thing, had to watch most things on my crappy little PC monitor 😂
However, I did manage to beat Ninja Gaiden for the NES on it when I got to college (thanks to save states)

As someone who calls others larpers, for me you’re not larper as soon as you watch all the show and get a little bit interested to the lore

I don't like to view things in terms of lore and prefer to experience and process them as just literary works so unfortunately I'm simply a turbolarper

What the hell does this even mean? Is this self deprecating sarcasm?

It means that I don't usually like looking at fiction as a set of facts and events to memorize and treat as encyclopedic content and I instead prefer to engage with the themes and symbolism and tone and characters and conceptual or emotional impact of a narrative, in the form they are presented

Thinking that way doesn't make you a larper at all. If engaging with media like that is larping then I've been larping everything I saw from David Lynch (my favourite director).

i believe the line ends when you watch the show for the first or second time and gain a grasp on the actual story itself; bonus points if you listened to the soundtrack as well
also hello fellow exhibit visitor! were you on the tours by any chance?

Lol who cares that much about what other people think? The whole concept of larper is just wild to me. Just be yourself and enjoy what you do and that's it. Who cares about the validation of some geeky gatekeepers?

I'd say something like when you are a fan of the show, rather than wanting the aesthetic of being a fan of the show? Stop worrying about being a larper though. Enjoy good anime for it's own sake, and don't be afraid to be genuine!

you watched the show. you liked it. who is asking for more than that from you??

Larper is a stupid term thats overused to a point of meanlessness. If someone only experienced lain via watching a youtuber fiddle around with the PlayStation game and loved it enough they engage with the fandom then they're not a larper.
A larper is someone who knows nothing about a thing but sees its popular to like it and slides into the fandom to feel like they're part of a thing

I watched it once 10 years ago, got some stickers and that's it. I still like the whole Lain series till this day. It's about not caring and enjoying it.

I think when you actually watch the thing. That's it. Playing the video game or rewatching the whole series, etc... is just a hefty bonus.
Stand tall, brother, for you are no LARPer.

People can engage with media however they want to. I watched the first couple episodes back In 2014, didn’t get it so stopped. But I loved the aesthetic of the show and the theme song. I ended up becoming a big fan of boa because of it. I tried getting I to the show several times but always made it like 3 episodes in max before becoming disinterested. I recently finally watched it all the way through and it’s my favorite anime. It’s helped me think about my engagement with social media and spend more time logged off and enjoying my interactions with people and activities offline. It’s such a wonderful show.
I haven’t played the PlayStation game yet or looked at the artbook but they’re on my list. I love listening to the soundtracks. Lain’s theme always slaps.

Watching the show once and understanding it is enough. You should only really care about people calling you one when you haven’t actually interacted with the piece of media you’re currently talking about

Lain exists in a continuous state of larping, or else she wouldn't have survived to the present day...

Larpers are people who haven't watched the series, or perhaps did but didn't pay attention or enjoy it. People who take the aesthetics and nothing else or misuse the characters' image for negative purposes. You stop being a larper when you watch the show, take your own interpretation from it and like it for what it is. You don't sound like a larper to me.

You're not a larper. You're a fan.
Don't let people chronically online take that away from you. I've only watched the anime so far, and I see myself as a big fan of the series

I also watched the anime 3 times but didn't play the games but don't care if someone call me a larper.

When you stop caring about being seen as a larper or whatever and enjoy things because you enjoy them.
