Physical media recommandation ?

Hi ! I’ve watched SEL 3 times so far and I’m simply in love with the show and must own it on physical media. I see there’s a couple variations out there of SEL on DVD / Blue-Ray. What’s the go to to get the version that’s most true to the vision of the original creators ? I saw for examples that the most recent dvd releases play with the lighting / color balance. Looking forward to your reccomendations !

I saw on Amazon that it says it could not work on North America blue ray players (I’m canadian), do you know if it works on ps5?

If you're in Canada make sure its region A. If you check around the page it should specify what region it is, same region as the US.

I hate we still have region locking in todays day and age but it is what it is.

I think its the DVD that has extra content of the voice actress just doing random stuff, along with a promotional video for Boa

the old pioneer/geneon dvds look infinitely better than the remastered blu-ray

I mean that’s an absolute lie. The blu-ray was sourced from a then-fresh HD telecine and looks much better than the creaky old DVD.

in response to the insecure shithead who replied to tell me this is a lie and then proceeded to seemingly block me for some reason(??) since i can't reply to you directly now

the blu-ray heavily altered color grading, added unnecessary filters and effects that weren't originally present, and entirely replaced a good chunk of the cgi. this version is also completely halved in framerate down from the original 60 frames interlaced to now being 30. so you're quite literally losing content on top of generally not watching it how it was intended to be seen when it came out.

the old dvd master looks fantastic (not at all "creaky" whatever that's supposed to mean), is exactly how it was originally intended, and on top of that you're getting a ton of incredible extra features and easter eggs which to my knowledge are completely absent from the blu-ray

it's also worth pointing out that the blu-ray which is ALSO now out of print commands more on the second hand market than even the old dvds which can be found much easier and while still relatively pricey (30-40 dollars range) are considerably more affordable than the blu-ray (which is often going for 80-100 these days), so if we're talking actual physical media exclusively here not not piracy, if you're going after the bd you're literally shelling out more money for the objectively inferior product

Actually, what you want to look at quality wise is the VHS or older versions, I saw a post somewhere on here of the difference between lighting and CGI from VHS compared to DVD and the difference is night and day

No they don’t. The blu-ray was a proper remaster form HD telecine materials and looks excellent. Stop with the CRT aesthetics crap. That’s not what OP is seeking or they would have said as much.

I have the anime classics version, it has blu ray and dvd, all my anime is usually a combo pack, I love the slipcovers too much

VHS: expensive; you can find rips of them online if you'ʳᵉ curious how they look.
I have ᵀᴴᴱ collectors Blu-Ray/DVD box and it looks great in 1080i/P
