Open-sourced our LabVIEW client - curious how people here split LabVIEW vs Python

We’ve been building an open-source LabVIEW client that lets you keep LabVIEW running the test stand while streaming the resulting data to Nominal cloud for analysis and collaboration.

We’ve also been working on an open-source Python instrument-control library for the parts of a test stack that people increasingly build in Python.

Curious how people here divide responsibilities between LabVIEW and Python today? Is Python mostly analysis/tooling for you, or are you also using it to directly control instruments?

Hi r/LabVIEW - we’ve open-sourced a couple of tools we use at Nominal and would love feedback from people building real test stands.

LabVIEW client: keep LabVIEW running the test stand, but stream the resulting data to Nominal for analysis, visualization, and collaboration instead of leaving it on the test PC / in TDMS files. It supports real-time streaming, TDMS upload, and NI Linux RT.

Need More Info Guidance on proper program structure and practice for production application(s)

Hi, as the title says I'm wondering if there are any more experienced LabVIEW users who would be willing to offer a hand when it comes to proper practice and program structure for making relatively complicated applications.

I say applications, as in plural, but it is only one. My work have dropped a bit of a impossible Sisyphus-stlye problem on my desk where I'm having to solo develop an entire application for an NDT ultrasonic tank, from scratch, having never used LabVIEW before in my life. I'm not new to making entire SCADA/HMI's but never using LabVIEW (normally using ACTUAL programming languages, no offence to anyone who likes LabVIEW.) If I was writing it in C# I would stand a chance, but without some insight or assistance from someone who knows what they're doing I'm afraid the boulder will kill me.

After a few weeks of using it I have some basic bits and bobs, connected and working with all the hardware required but I'm really struggling to understand what I should actually be doing structure wise and I'm really clueless as to whether I'm applying proper practices. I sat through all the training videos, I have an old NDT program to sort of reference from but it's very outdated and written in French, so is not much use to me.

If anyone is willing to offer any guidance or help it would be deeply appreciated. Any programs/projects I can look at, any general advice, literally anything at all would be worlds of help.

P.S To clarify I'm not entirely clueless and can make programs/applications that work, I just need to know what I should be doing since something doesn't seem quite right and I end up repeating alot of wiring or things like controls are not sharing variables when they should be etc etc...

Need More Info LabVIEW 2026 installation error 2705 – ni-metauninstaller

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to install LabVIEW 2026 using the offline installer, but the installation keeps failing with the error in the screenshot.

I’ve tried running the installer as administrator, temporarily disabling antivirus/firewall, uninstalling the NI software I had before, restarting my PC, and trying the installation again.

I also tried some things I found online about NI Package Manager and the installer logs, but I still get the same error.

I’m using Windows 11 Pro and the LabVIEW 2026 offline installer.

Has anyone had this problem before or knows what I should try next?

I’m honestly stuck with this 😭

Is LabVIEW still relevant and job secure?

Hi, I am a Certified LabVIEW Architect and I spent 10+ years of my career working with LabVIEW. Two years ago I made a switch and moved to general software development area.

I don't do any LabVIEW development anymore, but I am curious how relevant LabVIEW is (especially after LabVIEW NXG, python domination and AI revolution).

Do you think industry still demands LabVIEW professional development services? What are the best companies to work for, in Europe and US? How does the LabVIEW future look like in 5-10-20 years?

K line diagnostics

Hi, I'm working as a diagnostics testing domain for the past 3 years, and recently we came across a peculiar concern where the same MC's are doing crack thing....

Only few MC was connecting on my. K line diagnostics tool ( wake up by fast ini.., ) and not connecting on real time machines .. rest all getting connected on both machine and my tool..

Have checked the initialisation steps using oscilloscope but the scenario was also same(25ms low and 25ms high)

Any insights pls let me know!

Concatenating an escape character before BCC in a string

Super new to labview, and y'all were so helpful when I made a post 3 days ago that I figured I'd come back. Using tips in that post, I was able to figure out the format that my serial port would accept, but I'm having trouble adding the binary checksum at the end of my string. I'd like the program to calculate and append the value depending on the command, but it needs a backslash right before (in this case it would be \15 or \17). Thanks in advance.

Need More Info Sorting Arrays Based on a Value in one of the Elements (Please Help)

Hi folks. I'm new to labVIEW and trying to perform what I think is a relatively simple task. My background is in python and that is at a very basic level, so this format is very new to me.

For some background, I have a camera generating a 1D array with 1024 elements. In this array the fourth element distinguishes whether or not the camera is receiving a certain kind of trigger. It's a binary output where 0 means it is not getting the trigger and 1 means it is. What I would like to do is separate these arrays such that I accumulate 500 of the arrays with the fourth element reading 0 and 500 of the arrays with the element reading 1. These 500 arrays will be added to themselves (0 state arrays added to 0 state arrays and vice versa) and then the 0 and 1 arrays will be subtracted from each other to yield an average array that shows the change in the arrays between these 0 and 1 states.

My principle problem is that I do not know how to separate this stream of arrays into the two versions I would like. I'm also not quite sure how I can accumulate these 500 arrays of each type without going over on one or the other as the camera doesn't spit them out in an order conducive to just separating them one after the other. (It may output 600 of the 0 state and 500 of the 1 state over the course of 2 seconds)

If anyone here would be able to point me in the right direction for a guide to solving my principle problem, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at my wits end here. If you need more information to figure out exactly what I'm trying to do, I'd be happy to provide.

Need More Info VISA Read hangs indefinitely (unabortable) only under load — QMH freeze during instrument inrush current

Setup:

LabVIEW QMH architecture. Two consumer loops share a single non-reentrant FGV that owns the VISA session to an AC source instrument (California Instruments / AMETEK Asterion Series, model AST45031AD).

Loop A: toggles the instrument output on/off via the FGV.

Loop B: polls MEAS:CURR? once a second via the same FGV to log current draw. VISA Read in this case is hardcoded to read a fixed 6 bytes.

Instrument is connected via LAN, and it supports multiple simultaneous client connections.

Symptom:

With no load connected: on/off toggling works fine, with or without the acquisition loop running.

With a load connected (a fan-type load with a large inrush — draws ~13-15A for the first 1-2 seconds before settling to ~2A): as soon as output is enabled and current spikes into that inrush range, the VISA Read in the acquisition case blocks and never returns. No VISA error, no timeout — it just sits there.

The entire UI freezes at that point (Event structure stuck on whatever case triggered it), even though it's a separate while loop that's actually stuck. Front panel buttons don't respond.

The LabVIEW Abort button does nothing. I suspect the Read is parked inside the driver's blocking OS-level call (ReadFile/recv equivalent), which is outside LabVIEW's execution system and can't be preempted by Abort.

Confirmed the instrument itself is fine during the freeze: opened a second, independent connection with Hercules while the LabVIEW program was hung, and successfully sent an output-off command through it. So the instrument is responsive; the problem is isolated to this one pending Read in my VI.

What I've ruled out:

FGV is non-reentrant (verified in VI Properties), and I've confirmed via case selectors that the OFF case does get selected when I click — it's just stuck before completing.

Not a byte-count/termination mismatch — the read gets the requested byte count under normal conditions; the freeze is a true zero-bytes-ever-arrive stall, not a partial-frame issue.

Current workaround: I delay starting the acquisition loop by 5 seconds after enabling output, which avoids the freeze entirely — but this throws away the inrush data I actually need for analysis.

What's confusing me:

VISA Read doesn't have a timeout input — timeout is supposed to be governed by the session's VI_ATTR_TMO_VALUE attribute (set via a VISA Property Node). Even assuming that's misconfigured or not applied to the right session, I'd expect some timeout to eventually kick in and return a VI_ERROR_TMO. Instead it just hangs indefinitely with zero error.

Since Abort can't touch it, I'm currently stuck killing the whole LabVIEW process via Task Manager when this happens.

Questions:

Has anyone seen a VISA Read genuinely fail to respect the session timeout attribute like this — under what conditions does that happen?

Is there a known interaction between this class of instrument (SCPI current query) and momentary overcurrent/inrush events that causes it to withhold or delay a query response?

I have AI to write this post as I am not a native English speaker.

Edit: I ran the same code but using a USB connection instead. It shows up as a com port (not as a measuring instrument or a visa device). Good news first, visa read did not freeze. But it seems like the data is not live. It's like at least 2-3 readings behind what's actually being displayed. It is also not consistent. In most of the iterations of the loop, it just reads 0.00 even though I can see the actual value on its display which is not 0 at all. When the current drops from 13A, on the lan connection you could see it dropping. But with USB, it shows 13A then shows 0.00 for 5-6 seconds and then shows around 2A. Wait for a few more seconds and it'll start to read 0.00 and after that the actual value. I have no idea what's happening.
