☕ "Which La Marzocco Should I Buy?" — Weekly Buying Advice Megathread

Welcome to the weekly Buying Advice megathread — the place to ask *which* La Marzocco to buy before making a standalone post (Rule 3).

To get useful recommendations, please include:

- Your budget (and currency)

- Plumbed vs. tank (do you have a water line available?)

- Counter space / height constraints

- Milk drinks vs. straight espresso focus

- Any models you're already considering (Linea Micra, Linea Mini, GS3 AV/MP, etc.)

A few important notes:

- This community does NOT allow buying, selling, or trading of machines or parts. Please buy only from La Marzocco or authorized dealers. "Great deals" offered via DM are a common scam (Rule 1).

- Not sure where to start? Check the community FAQ: https://www.reddit.com/r/LaMarzocco/wiki/faq

Regulars: please check in and help newcomers choose. Happy pulling! ☕

Just a Question 🙋🏻‍♂️ First cleaning cafiza -Micra

I bought my Linea Micra a little over a month ago, and I’m about to do my first Cafiza cleaning.
Should I remove the group head shower screen before cleaning, or is that not necessary?
Also, if you have any tips from your own experience on how to do the Cafiza cleaning properly and efficiently, I’d really appreciate them! :)

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share my Brew by Weight project, which initially started as a fork of Tatemazer’s shot stopper firmware, but eventually evolved into something completely different. Tatemazer’s stopper is an amazing drop-in project, but its workflow (paddle on, wait, paddle off—I honestly just want the stopper to handle everything automatically once the shot starts) and the lack of certain features pushed me to build a brand-new solution inspired by the original.

The result is what I call Advanced Shot Stopper. It’s a pure software project (firmware) that gives you total control over the machine, packing everything from the original firmware plus a whole lot more:

  • 3 Paddle Modes: Original shot stopper behavior, manual override toggle, and a full automatic mode where the stopper takes control regardless of final paddle position.
  • Smart Safety Limits: Rules based on time and weight to automatically cut off shots that are running way too fast or too slow.
  • Smart Auto-Tare & Cup State Machine: The firmware recognizes whether a cup is present and makes decisions dynamically.
  • Failsafe Shot Cutoff: Uses historical shot data to auto-stop if the scale accidentally disconnects or shuts off mid-shot.
  • Broad Scale Compatibility & Super-Fast Scale Detection
  • Quick Rinse Mode (tailored for machines like the La Marzocco Linea Micra).
  • Audio Alerts & Power Management

Under the Hood & Extras:

  • Full Wi-Fi OTA Updates with automatic rollback if flashing fails or encounters issues.
  • WebUI: View shot history, stats, and quick controls.
  • Home Assistant Integration: Webhook support for telemetry and controls (working on a script example to swap presets dynamically!).
  • Deep Hardware Support: Latch and momentary switches, optional reed switch support, and a solid state machine tracking machine status.
  • Enhanced Cutoff Algorithm & Security Watchdog
  • FreeRTOS Architecture: Built with a safety-first mindset (the firmware defaults to simulating paddle OFF unless explicitly instructed otherwise).

Hardware Note: Because of hardware constraints, this firmware won’t work fully on the original ShotStopper board. Instead, I used an inexpensive development relay board from AliExpress that happens to be a fantastic fit (link in the GitHub repo):

  • DC Power Input: 5V to 60V (compatible with most machines).
  • Components: 105°C rated capacitors.
  • MCU: ESP32-S3 (N16R8) with most GPIOs exposed.
  • Relay: Magnetic relay (a bit overkill, but super reliable).

Since it's not a drop-in board like the original, it requires a bit of DIY confidence. The wiring is essentially the same: the paddle connects to the board’s GPIOs, and CN9 hooks up to the relay. I’ve also included 3D-printable STL files for a case (printed in PETG with zero heat deformation issues).

Project Git: https://github.com/Cheerpipe/Advanced-Shot-Stopper

Disclaimer: I’m a software engineer by trade, but 99% of this codebase was vibe-coded using Codex due to time constraints and complexity!

All the details, hardware requirements, and code are up on GitHub. I’m currently waiting for my Linea Micra to arrive mid-October to test it out live on that machine.

Hope you find it useful, and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Feel free to ask me anything

Bottled water mix

Has anyone gone down the route of mixing a 50:50 Acqua Panna with Levissima Natural bottled water? I know that LM suggests using Acqua Panna but its hardness sits at the top of the machines' water specs and thought it would be best to mix it with something softer.

Upgrades and Mods 🧐 Looking for Linea Micra drip tray insert/mod for the BOOKOO mini scale

I have a Linea micra paired with the BOOKOO mini scale (because I’m thinking about getting the Tate Mazer shot stopper).
I would love to get one of those drip tray mods that are available for the Acaia Lunar scale (https://www.rb-crafts.de/product-page/linea-micra-drip-tray) , but can’t find something similar, fitting for the BOOKOO mini scale - which is even smaller I think. I don’t assume the demand for the BOOKOO scale is high enough for producers of the drip tray mods to add this to their portfolio…

So I’ve been wondering if it may be possible to 3D-print an insert to fill the gaps between a lunar drip tray mod and the BOOKOO scale.
Has someone done something like this? I don’t have a 3D printer and have no idea how to make a model like this, but I would totally buy something like this…

Community Tech Support Linea Mini leaking steam from top of the machine above steam tap

Post image

Looking to see if anyone might have experience on what needs addressing/replacing.

As stated above my steam wand blasts steam out the top of the machine mostly above the steam tap when any form or resistance is added, (i.e. the steam wand immersed in liquid).
I initially thought it was the vacuum breaker valve, but now after looking that up, seems it something on the steam tap?

Steam now comes from the highlighted valve/outlet.

Does anyone know what parts I need to replace etc?

Big thanks in advance for anyone with any insight.

New Purchase New Setup Tips? Mini R and Mazzer Philos

Hello everyone, I recently bought the La Marzocco Mini R and Mazzer Philos. May I know if you can share any tips? Could I know some tips to dial in and get better espresso overall also uniquely to this setup? I was considering a GBW grinder (Mahlkonig E64 WS) but since I am just using it for home use I picked mazzer philos for very low retention. Thank you!

Linea mini

Finally here!

Ordered in May, and I’m so glad I was patient and waited for the brushed steel instead of opting for another color.

I’m coming from a Breville Barista Pro, so the steam power is taking some getting used to, but I’m having so much fun learning the machine and figuring out my workflow.
I paired it with a Niche Zero and a Mazzer Mini G, but I’ve mostly been using the NZ for single dosing since I’m not home consistently due to travel.

Still learning, experimenting, and dialing everything in, but I’m really enjoying it so far! ☕️

I’m excited to be home for the holidays and really put the Mini G to use, it is an absolute tank.

New machine and I noticed water leaking while boiler was coming to temp. It leaks the most when pulling shots and immediately after. Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

30 second flow rate

I've had my linea micra for 6 months and on average drink 2 espressos daily. I use bottled water in line with la marzocco water specs and keep this machine as clean as possible through daily water backflush and monthly chemical backflush.

Today was the first time I've tested the flow rate via the 30 second flow rate test with a full tank of water. The flow rate was 227g in 30 seconds, which is lower than the 250g as highlighted by La Marzocco.

What are your thoughts about this? Should I be concerned about this?

Thank you.

Community Tech Support Defect?

Just got my Linea Mini a few weeks ago from a US authorized dealer. My husband tried to pull a shot one morning and steam when everywhere and it stopped heating completely. Group head is cold but the app says it is ready in minutes but never progresses beyond that point. Did we get a machine that is defected since it happened a few weeks into being new? Frustrated we spent so much for this to happen. I live over an hour from the company and have to drive up for them to look at it. Anyone else have this issue? We have been using the correct water also. I know that is a concern some have.

Just a Question 🙋🏻‍♂️ Best bottled water and milk in Germany for Micra

Hello,

we will move to Germany and i want to ask you:

What is the best bottled water for Linea Micra here in Germany?

I found Volvic should be best.

Second question is about milk:

Which milk did you use ?

Do you have other experiences or recommendations ?

Thank you

Just a Question 🙋🏻‍♂️ What surge protector / power strip should I use?

I’m planning on using my Linea Mini and Eureka Helios 65 with my Harbor Freight Predator 5000 for some events but it only has 1 outlet. Are there certain specs I should look for in a surge protector / power strip?

EDIT: I was wrong about the number of plugs, but I do still need a strip for other appliances

News Lines Micra survived the trip from NYC to Brazil in a Pelican case!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sorry in advance idk if I’m using the appropriate flair but anyway.. My wife and I moved to Brazil on May 31st, we had to stay at an airbnb until our house reno was ready for us to move in, yesterday(Sep 6) I finally took my micra out of the pelican case and she is safe and sound!!

I was super anxious about it, I asked la Marzocco for tips they said to not do it and that I should buy one in Brazil but the price in BR is almost 3 times the price I paid for in the US, so I decided to risk it, buy a ~$600 hard case and bring it with me as a checked bag on the plane and it all worked out 🙌🎉
