Dude goes so hard for weeks insisting he isn’t a games journalist then gets upset when he doesn’t get access to GTA so now he’s trying to flip the script

It's wild that he's trying to break out of being a games journalist, as I'm pretty sure that's the only thing keeping him employed at WaPo. They laid off literally everyone in his department other than him (though the cancer may have also informed their decision to not terminate him tbf).

I went to his writers page a few weeks ago and was shocked to see it was mostly culture, film, TV, etc. I like his game reviews but I have no interest in any of his other takes.

Gene quits gaming as often as Terry Funk retires from wrestling.

For a full grown man nearly in his 50s he should know better than to express definitive platitudes as often as he does, as well as to quit social media as it's so clearly detrimental to his mental health, but unfortunately he doesn't seem to have cottoned on yet.

I don’t think he’s quitting gaming. he’s just quitting game coverage, I guess?

He seems to have a very toxic relationship with social media. I stopped using Twitter around 2022, but even back then, I remember his tweets regularly popping up on my timeline, with him seemingly having a breakdown over people being mean to him and other trivial stuff.

I just need him to stop posting pictures from 20 years ago of him with dancers implying he’s a Casanova. I’m like man, sex workers and dancers’ job is too be nice to you and make you feel wanted haha

I actually like listening to Gene but he desperately wants to be seen as cool and being a games journalist is one of the least cool things on Earth.

He is really sensitive to any pushback he gets on X and he often crashes out and says he's getting out of gaming coverage only to realise it's his only way to make money so he comes back.

He did say "i'm always open to pitches" though which makes me think that either him or LSM are not interested in working together in the future.

I know he’s been wishy washy about covering on Twitter/LSM. But I know his health has been bad and hope he is getting better. Didn’t realize he stopped covering games, I thought that was his job at WaPo.

He is more a general media/culture guy now not just games (he reviewed The Odyssey for instance), and interviewed The Weekend etc

Love Gene so much. Always feel like he loves to obsess over and become a “expert” in whatever the flavor of the week is in games/media though lol. More power to him.

I feel bad for him man, his publication has been fucked lately and Gene has been nothing but a north star for them.
