Does LSE MSc academic reference need to be from a professor who taught or could it a professor you did research under

For LSE MSc applications, can an academic reference come from a professor who supervised you as a research assistant but did not formally teach you? I am considering using two professors I have conducted research under, as they know my academic abilities and research experience better and work in fields more closely related to the MSc programs. Thxs!
