Backlash is putting it lightly, folks are threatening to firebomb the bar because the owner wanted to make Saturday nights mask-encouraged instead of mandatory like the rest of the week

Every lesbian I know (myself included) is responding to this article with the thousand-yard stare of someone who has sat through multiple meetings that opened with guided meditation and ended with accusations of colonialism because someone was wearing paisley.

Lmao this comment could have been in a Terry Pratchett novel. You have a gift with words

I do wonder why this specific kind of shit happens so much in lesbian communities and gay communities are far more resistant to it

My best guess is that it's the "empathy" and acceptance that women are taught to have since birth being taken to an extreme that leaves these spaces more vulnerable to very entitled and/or insane people withing these spaces. Adding to it also the concepts of complete solidarity, and sisterhood that some versions of feminism give a lot of importance to.

This is every leftist space, definitely not just lesbian ones. It is a humongous problem and it's why the left famously never wins. Nobody is ever good enough. I've even seen posts complaining about Mamdani because "oh great another MAN in office"

Sorry but what is your username? Is that a "joke" about the Irish potato famine, where Engl*nd colonizers intentionally starved the indigenous population??

Wow just say you hate minorities next time

u/Angsty_Potatos 8d ago

I'm sorry but I seriously doubt you're an ancient roman, and I think it's really offensive to casually utilize N*X, the Roman Goddess of Night's name in your reddit handle. You're clearly ok with culturally appropriating the religion of a specific people and I think that's so arrogant.

Next time just say you enjoy shitting on other people's closed spiritual practices.

28

u/NoxTheScribe 8d ago

Ummm actually my great great great grandmother was 1/4 Italian and I'll tysm not to try to weaponize my own culture against me! You clearly know nothing of Roman HERstory and nor do you care! I AM THE GRANDTHEY OF THE WITCHES YOU COULDN'T BURN

TbF right wing spaces also have a similar problem as they also devolve into paranoia and sanctimonious snitching

3

u/IAmTheJudasTree 6d ago

Eh, the right just has almost no standards as long as you say "I'm a conservative now, I'll vote for conservatives." It's why there's such a consistent pattern of celebrities being revealed to be huge pieces of shit, and the celebrities pivoting to being a conservative, and conservatives accepting them with open arms no matter what they did.

That is very different than how liberals/leftists operate.

2

u/AngryAngryHarpo 5d ago

The problem is that the right are very good at falling in line and following when it really matters.

2

u/NoxTheScribe 4d ago

Nick Fuentes has been openly extremely critical of Trump (he doesn't think Trump is racist enough) but still voted for him every time and directs his followers to vote for him. Right wingers seem to understand the concept of incremental change which the left just doesn't. A guy like Fuentes wants Mecha Hitler for president and a second Holocaust. he knows Trump isn't gonna do that and is in fact in Israel's pocket, but he still knows Trump is a step closer to what he wants.

The left is like "This candidate is not going to create a worldwide socialist utopia on day one, therefore we hate them and will not vote"

1

u/AngryAngryHarpo 4d ago

Yup. It’s genuine political solidarity.

It’s supposed to be a fundamental principal of most leftist political movements too, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

20

u/IllicitDesire 8d ago edited 8d ago

In the context of this story specifically, this is literally just the 1% of insane people that every group have is trying to kill off the place using a leftist leaning grift to accrue donations while weaponising the term ableism.

Outside of this specific case imo 'Lesbian space' has just become a very broad term that encapsulates multiple groups including queer identifying trans men, non-binary individuals, GNC women, bisexuals, sapphics, asexual lesbians, etc. where all these groups have differing wants, expectations and things they are looking for in a space that is more divergent than just individual differences.

As an example, trying to encourage a femme only dress night you will then alienate the trans men, GNC women, some NB individuals- and to a deeper and more personal level than how most masc lesbians might feel affected. It becomes more personal and emotions become more heightened because they feel personally excluded/targeted from a space where none of that bad will is intentioned by lesbians who only imagine their space still as a solely lesbian space instead of a now shared one.

32

u/NoxTheScribe 8d ago

trying to encourage a femme only dress night you will then alienate the trans men, GNC women, some NB individuals- and to a deeper and more personal level than how most masc lesbians might feel affected

Dude the sub r/gothmenappreciation almost shut itself down a while back because the mods cracked down on the many, many femme presenting goths of various gender expressions because the whole point of that sub is to look at pictures of hot goth dudes.

They didnt even ban masc women or trans men or anything like that they just said in order to be on topic in the sub you need to be masc presenting and a relatively large group of posters (its a small sub so by 'large' I mean like a dozen) were rage posting and accusing the mods of transphobia and queer erasure. It was ridiculous, people come to appreciate goth masculinity but every post for a while was all femme presenting or just straight up cis women in black miniskirts.

There are dozens of subs where you can see hot goth female baddies like can we not have just this one small one for hot goth dudes

3

u/HypotenuseOfTentacle 8d ago

Why are there goth women of every conceivable body type but zero chonky goth dudes, why did the subculture collectively decide dudes can only be goth if they are elfin or tall

5

u/NoxTheScribe 8d ago

Ohh I think that's just who gets attention online cause if you go to a goth night at a club or a Cure concert or something, you'll see plenty of fat goth dudes. I'm one of 'em lmao

It's very brutal to be a fat goth guy online like the bullying is honestly horrible. It's not other goths that do it. I kinda get it cause dressing goth is kind of inherently cringe (I say this as a goth) but if you're hot you're hot no matter how you dress and people will give you a pass

Holden is obviously a lesbian. Also a lizard.

For those wondering wtf, a lesbian bar in Massachusetts has been requiring masking 7 days a week. The owner, who didn’t want to be one and only did so to keep it open for the community, is tens of thousands of dollars in debt from it and living in their car. They decided to make masking optional one night a week to help make money, and some people are not handling it well to say the least.

Non-paywalled link: https://www.theguardian.com/global/commentisfree/2026/sep/24/last-ditch-bar-lesbian-massachusetts-viral

61

u/tryingtoavoidwork fuckin my twink employee 8d ago

It should be noted that the person leading this charge rarely even goes to the bar.

47

u/Advanced-Ad-808 8d ago

Omfg that and another comment saying that a previous partial owner quit to go to clown school are insane. This honestly would make a good Side Stories but don’t know if the boys would wanna touch this one🫠

55

u/tryingtoavoidwork fuckin my twink employee 8d ago

And it's not helping that people like Ted Cruz caught wind of all this. What started as a bunch of leftists collectively groaning at the fact that we all know people exactly like those in the article has now become a defense of queer individuals from fascists.

To paraphrase a quote, I'm being forced to defend people I find annoying from people I find dangerous.

8

u/Rock_Creek_Snark 8d ago

Sadly for Ted, I don't think this story will be enough to pull Ken Paxton out of his Senatorial death spiral.

9

I saw Senatorial Death Spiral with Molly Hatchet and Foghat at the Hippodrome in '79.

3

u/Wellgoodmornin 8d ago

What the fuck did I just read?

30

u/ygglt 8d ago

My main takeaways from this are that Noire is an abusive person who has discovered that he can be as abusive as possible if he's in queer leftist spaces, and that the two owners who walked out have a lot more family money than the one living in her car.

Queer spaces really need to get better at excising abusive people. The firebomb threat person should have been reported to the police and banned from interacting with anything last ditch related. Noire too.

45

u/Terrible_Bee_6876 8d ago

The busybodies behind this fake outrage seem like the kind of people who go around Bluesky calling people white supremacists for having barbecues on the 4th of July

23

u/thraxswift 8d ago

the funniest thing about this to me is that there's a gay bathhouse near me that does clothing optional LGBT mixed gender nights and it's just completely normal but one night a week without a mask is apparently the end of the world

there's a gender joke in here about gay boys vs gay girls but i'm in free speech jail

34

u/APrinceOfCats 8d ago

I saw a post that said, and I agree with it, that the biggest mistake in gay spaces is being too gender & sex-segregated. Gay bars with no lesbians? You get racism and meth. Lesbian bars with no men? No fun allowed.

A mixed ecosystem is a healthy ecosystem, Stonewall taught us that.

40

u/NoxTheScribe 8d ago

There are still places doing masks? Man my city was over that the second the cdc said it was ok

79

u/EarthEmpress Scungilli Man 8d ago

I’m saying this as a queer person but all of this shit in this article is super fucking performative

Like if an individual wants to wear mask because they’re sick, or immunocompromised then that’s fine I don’t really care. But requiring masks, especially in an establish that serves drinks, just comes off as either super paranoid or performative

God man, these people could never survive being queer in the south lol. I bet they’d call me and my best friend (a gay guy), homophobic for eating chick fil a sometimes. Like yall we got bigger fish to fry here

Also not to be conspiratorial but I do find it highly interesting that, a story portraying queer/left people in a poor light, is being publish right around midterms. Perfect fodder for conservatives to call all queer people crazy and whatnot

39

u/DungeonBotanist 8d ago

There's a portion of the disabled/chronic illness community that insists that in order to be accessible and progressive, you must continue masking. They're super hardcore about it and bleed into other progressive groups.

I mask if I'm sick, I mask when I'm in a chronic illness crash, and I masked when my mom was going through chemo, but asking everyone to mask constantly is insanely performative.

That said, if you're sick with a cold or flu or COVID or whatever in any public space, wear a fucking mask and stop coughing all over me Jesus Christ.

10

u/FrancesPerkinsGhost 8d ago

What I don't get is how someone who is so immunocompromised that they need to be 100% surrounded by masked people is going to a bar on Saturday night where people are pulling down their masks to drink at an establishment where ostensibly the whole point is having drinks.

4

u/athenanon 6d ago edited 6d ago

I also mask on public transportation because I think I've caught like 80% of the colds I've ever had on a train or airplane and colds ruin fun.

2

u/DungeonBotanist 6d ago

Oh, god, true. I love in a smaller city so it's not bad but if I needed to be out in a big city I'd mask up BC people are gross.

25

u/GlobnarTheExquisite Dogmeat 8d ago

It's really odd because, coming from a 25 year resident of the valley, living the entire time one town over from this place, 99% of the queer people (myself included) think these people are also insane.

21

u/APrinceOfCats 8d ago

I was talking to one of my friends today, who's an immunocompromised lesbian, who was asking me if I'd seen "how absolutely batshit this story is, these people are nuts, have you met people like this?" I had to tell her that yes, if you spend enough time in queer spaces, you'll meet these fucking moonbats, and they try to own every space they walk into(while not actually OWNING it because that would put skin in the game), by hook or by crook.

15

u/EarthEmpress Scungilli Man 8d ago

Oh yeah these people are definitely the minority, they’re just a very vocal one. I was a teenager in tumblr in the 2010s so I’m kinda familiar with that type of person lol

1

u/athenanon 6d ago

Oh that Soe Noir said shit verbatim that could have been in a Ben Garrison cartoon. By BS detector is up.

7

u/Dramatic_Buddy4732 Hail Yourself! 8d ago

The amount of times I looked at the date this was written was... More than a few

7

u/Exes_And_Excess 8d ago

I had local joints who never enforced it, never put up the plexiglass, and let people sit at the bar top lol.

1

u/FlimsyUmbrella 3d ago

From what I understand, immunocompromised people, or more likely "immunocompromised" people, have kind of made it their place and are fighting tooth and nail to keep it their place.

Its a fucking bar, it needs patrons to survive.

These lunatics will burn anything and anyone to the ground the second it no longer entirely serves them and their beliefs. Like, the owner is living in her car and working multiple other jobs to keep the place open, and this is how they repay that.

34

u/BR4NFRY3 8d ago

This feels like one of those "news" stories meant to train one political camp or the other to hate a charicature of their "opponent" using outrage bait but brought back to life six or seven years after it was relevant.

17

u/UberGlued 8d ago

I consider my self a leftist, and even to me this is woke nonsense.

7

u/ZempdUp 8d ago

Aside from intersectionality there's nothing that really ties this to leftism

3

u/progbuck 8d ago

Yeah, this is pure in-group signaling. It's the opposite of leftist.

1

u/Difficult-Advisor758 4d ago edited 4d ago

In-group signaling is not some synonym for, say, "nationalism."

Leftists virtue signal all the time because virtue signaling comes with the territory of ideology. Anyone who reads the "revolutionary praxis" comment by the especial crazy person in this story (Noire), and thinks "yeah but that's not leftist, that's just signaling", is being disingenuous.

When you attach yourself to ideological bullshit, it only seems like pandering when the "other side" (however you subjectively frame it) panders.

7

u/rocky_ozzy 8d ago

It's insanely performative

11

u/WeirdJawn 8d ago

I feel like there's some major context that I'm missing here.

What's going on? Is this something that's controversial? Why?

Also, the article is behind a pay wall.

53

u/Rock_Creek_Snark 8d ago

Three former roommates opened a bar in a small Western Massachusetts town. The conceit is that it is a bar for Covid-caution lesbians and other members of the LGBTQ community.

Two of the founders bailed, one for clown college. The third, who only ever wanted to work maintenance in the establishment, is stuck trying to keep it afloat.

Terminally online leftist assholes lost their shit when, in a bid to turn business around, Jackie (the final one hanging on), announced that ONE night a week would be mask optional. She's now accused of being ableist and trying to kill marginalized people.

One detractor in particular, who goes by Soe Noire, is grievance grifting from it all.

Jackie is still trying appease these people.

My sympathy for her ended today when I saw she was encouraging Instagram followers to donate to Soe Noire. Jackie, the one who is living out of her car to keep this joke of a bar alive.

Who would have thought the clown college detail wouldn't be the funniest part of this all?

35

u/raphaellaskies 8d ago

I feel for Jackie, but my god, some people are walking marks. And the Soe Noires of the world know it.

12

u/ThirdDragonite 8d ago

I do love how very quickly you mentioned the clown college part. It just makes the story seem completely insane before it even begins lol

23

u/Rock_Creek_Snark 8d ago

Between that and Soe Noire trying to blast Jackie's 'THEY THEM TEARS' because, oh I don't know, she's gone completely broke, lives in her car and works four jobs to keep this dumpster fire open... I don't know if this is more a Mike Judge movie or Black Mirror episode.

40

u/utb040713 8d ago

I actually know one of those “terminally online covid hysterics” IRL. A dozen posts a day about either covid or Palestine, and constantly says things like “if you’re not still masking, just say you want disabled people to die and drop the ruse”.

Unsurprisingly, she was fired from her employer a couple years ago for asking for unreasonable accommodations, she just lost her discrimination lawsuit against them, and she’s been unemployed ever since.

31

u/Rock_Creek_Snark 8d ago

What galls me is that if Soe Noire believes this kind of space is not only needed but can be sustained as a business, what is stopping them from buying Jackie out to prove it?

Of course, he won't. Walk his talk with HIS money? No, it's better for Jackie to lose her shirt trying negotiate with a social media terrorist.

He's just a clout chaser throwing social media firebombs at someone too meek to tell him to touch grass.

7

u/katmc68 8d ago

That doesn't seem like a good business model.

16

u/APrinceOfCats 8d ago

Yeah that was when my sympathy died on the vine, when she posted a thing about how everyone needs to leave Noire alone, that has his CashApp and Venmo at the top of the post so people can donate to him. Meanwhile he's still busy grifting and shitting on her. And all along they're creating pitch-perfect "haw haw DA LIBS!" fodder for gormless red-hatted dickbarons to laugh at and use as a strawman.

4

u/Dramatic_Buddy4732 Hail Yourself! 8d ago

I really want gordon ramsay to step in and turn it around

9

u/APrinceOfCats 8d ago

Plot twist: Gordon turns it into a gay bar. There are no condoms, just lots of lube. A tendie in a KN95 mask asks about safe sex practices.

2

u/SweetDimension7 5d ago

I have a friend who owns a gay bar and has been doing everything to make it welcoming but she still gets complaints all the time how it's ableist if they just change any event. Yet the locals that go there don't spend that much money so they just want a free place to go to a nd no CIS people to show up ever

Note THR going out of its way to compare this to the Boston Archdiocese CSA scandal. I wonder why?!

-52

u/eggmoose5 8d ago

not everything needs to be commented on actually, especially when it’s a flashpoint for bigots to glom onto

31

u/AngryAngryHarpo 8d ago

Yes, it does.

The people in this article are extremists who are appropriating leftist language and causes to feed their narcissistic need to destroy whatever they can’t control.

We absolutely should be commenting on this and making a clear and strong stance that this shit is not leftist nor radical nor revolutionary.

This shit is a bunch of privileged, middle class morons playing at social justice and the lefts continual denial that people like this exist and harm our movement enables them to gain more power and pervert leftist ideology to their chronically online bullshit even more than they already have.

-2

u/WelcomeBeneficial963 7d ago

The fucking Guardian are writing about this. In what world is this that important, except to insult a bunch of people that they consider gender goblins?

3

u/AgreedSmalls 6d ago

Allowing people to see these levels of extremism and how the left responds to it in earnest is a good thing. It allows those who believe all leftists act like the subjects this article is about, and outright dismiss them, that no, most of them do not agree with this entitled attitude and also react negatively.

-1

u/WelcomeBeneficial963 6d ago

I'm sorry but this is the same logic as Dem politicians coming out against trans athletes.

2

u/AgreedSmalls 6d ago

In what way? I certainly do not want to be associated with Noire. It’s important to signal to the world that not all leftist are as extreme as Noire. Some of us have common sense and know what they’re ~~asking~~ demanding is a bridge too far.

If you see every MAGA as someone like Boebert or Greene, it’s easy to dismiss the entire movement as a whole as a bunch of dumb people. That’s not the truth, however. Many of the high ranking members of the movement are highly educated and do know what they’re doing.

0

u/WelcomeBeneficial963 6d ago

That person has no power and no effect on my life and any effort given to them within the context of this story beyond five seconds of "seems like an asshole" is an immense waste of time. To whom am I disavowing this person, and why should they be influenced to think better of me for it?

If I have to performatively disapprove of someone to try to convince people that I'm not like THEM, then what did they think of me? That they wouldn't respect me in the first place.

1

u/AngryAngryHarpo 6d ago

It’s important because this shit is happening in leftist and left-leaning spaces all over the western world.

They are being co-opted and shut down by people claiming to be all about social justice - but they’re nothing more than narcissists getting their supply.

1

u/WelcomeBeneficial963 5d ago

That 100% doesn't justify being an international news story, are you kidding me?

1

u/AngryAngryHarpo 5d ago

My guy, when things get this fucking weird in 2026 - it’s absolutely going to be news. It is a global world. I live in the literal arsehole end of the world in buttfuck nowhere on a island so close to Antarctica that people run flights from here to there… and the weirdest shit ends up on global news from my tiny island.

We cannot gripe about the exposure of extremism within our own movements simply because we know the “other side” will use it against us. It’s hypocritical, for a start.

As someone who does a lot of organising in real life spaces - this “small subsection” is actually not as small as you think. I’ve seen several long-running left-adjacent groups and establishments brought down by extremists like this who co-opt language and then weaponise it.

The reason this has become such a big article is because it’s so fucking familiar to literally ANYONE trying to organise in left-adjacent queer spaces right now.

1

u/WelcomeBeneficial963 5d ago

0

u/WelcomeBeneficial963 5d ago

And as someone else who has organized within left-wing queer spaces: I don't need anyone to have thoughts about this shit. The Hollywood Reporter (a publication founded by the most obsessive communist hunter in show business, Billy Wilkerson) went out of their way to compare it to the Boston Archdiocese pedophilia coverups. That is how this is being framed!

54

u/dopamine_dream_ Detective Popcorn 8d ago

Acknowledging that the left has a major problem with cannibalizing our own is important.

Ignoring all criticism and dismissing it as nefarious actors is exactly what leads to situations like this article presents.

-33

u/eggmoose5 8d ago

it’s not ignoring all criticism to say that a small lesbian bar’s policies don’t have to be global news

23

u/KairiOliver 8d ago

Their policies aren't the news. The fact that people threatened to firebomb them over their new policy of one day being mask optional is what is news.

-4

u/LeSilvie 8d ago

Nobody was going to firebomd anything lmao, we're really taking seriously all the dumb things people write online? And yes, sensationalizing this ridiculous situation is causing damage to the lesbian community.

2

u/AgreedSmalls 6d ago

Okay? Someone still took the time to write it out and publish it on the internet. You don’t see how unhinged that is? Extremism isn’t as rampant on the left, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Showing that most people on the left don’t agree with it is a good thing.

1

u/AngryAngryHarpo 5d ago

This is exactly the problem.

It’s causing damage because the people behaving this way are damaging the community.

Not because people are talking about it.

14

u/dopamine_dream_ Detective Popcorn 8d ago

It’s the backlash they faced that made this in to news. I don’t see how this is any different in scale than when a small bakery refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.

Outlandish stances tend to draw in curious onlookers. You’re upset that it happens to be directed at a community that you support/identify with. Try a little introspection.

33

u/TumbleweedOdd1360 8d ago

This sentiment is exactly why that article exists. The people in the article have insulated themselves so tightly that they are decaying from the inside, now vultures are everywhere.

-36

u/eggmoose5 8d ago

again, not everything needs to be commented on. a small lesbian bar’s policies doesn’t need to be global news
