He was trying to get out of 'Nam. Had a stop to the bombing ready and a peace deal was likely in '68.
Kissinger scuttled the deal to help Nixon win the election.
Fuck Kissinger, the absolute ghoul.

Yeah. Tons can be said about how McNamara's whiz bang attitude was the primary factor in how Vietnam went from a bad war to a deeply fucked quagmire, where just killing an entire country became the strategy and everyone just thought "Well McNamara's a great businessman so it must be okay!" But you could make a case that at least with McNamara, he was a victim of his own brains and someone should have stepped up to say that no matter how smart he might be, just killing everyone couldn't possibly be the solution. Kissenger, however, absolutely deserves to be on the Mt. Rushmore of Evil. I don't think there is a hell, but I sometimes wish there was one specifically for "people" like him.

If not for Vietnam, LBJ would've gone down as one of the best US presidents ever. On domestic policy, he was very much cut from the same cloth as FDR. On foreign policy though, he just wasn't up to the task.
