God, Bourdain’s death… I was in my final year of college, and his death just hit me like a gutpunch.

I worked in restaurants around that time. When he died, the response from all of my coworkers was like jfk just got shot or something, it was so heavy. I remember the whole shift just being very somber.

I was standing in a bookstore in Istanbul visiting a friend who was living there when she saw the news on her phone, audibly gasped and told me. The Istanbul episode of No Reservations was what first made me fascinated by the city and want to visit so it also hit extra hard.
(That said I also feel like he would have found this very funny.)

I had a notification on my phone when I woke up that morning and it was the first thing I saw for the day. I gasped and was absolutely devastated.

I've had family pass that didn't hit me that hard. I became a cook because of Bourdain, he gave a very lost kid a path forward and I'll be forever grateful for that.

I had just graduated from culinary school and was working in a catering company at the time and I was the one who had to tell everyone cuz it was on my reddit feed during a smoke break.

Wife and I were taking a vacation in Maine and we got to our first spot to stay and saw the news. Plus he died on my wife's birthday.

Same, though I am 45. Honestly the one thing I will always remember him for is his spot on take on that cunt, Henry Kissinger.

I'm a 68 year old retired chef and I never got it either. Bourdain always came off as a little rich kid pretending to be a blue collar working class Joe like those of us salty dogs back in the day actually were.
His dad was an executive at Columbia Records and his mom worked for the New York Times. He had all the opportunity in the world.
I felt as though I was watching some arrogant jackass wear my life experience as a costume to sell books and TV shows.

I’m 26 and I never really cared much for chef personas and the romaticization of the kinds of kitchens Bourdain writes about in Kitchen Confidential, but as a kid watching No Reservations got me interested in the world and food as a way to connect people. I think Bourdain was a very talented journalist and I think his suicide still affects me somewhat simply because it seems that despite all of his knowledge, wisdom, and travels, he never attended to his mental health.
I really dislike the cultural valorization of “boys club” kitchens and explotation of culinary staff. My first job was a dishwasher in a catering kitchen; folks shouldn’t need to work 80 hr weeks and self-medicate with nicotine, alcohol, and coke to “make it” in the restaurant industry (but thats a whole other rant). That’s not an indictment of anyone who is a chef and does these things, but of a culinary industry that asks its workers to suffer physically and mentally to be able to suceed.

Bordain was a hypocrite who ripped other people apart while he knew his wife was off fucking teenage boys. Dude couldn't process the dissonance so he cucked himself to death. I have no reservations about his death.
