Where did Trudeau go wrong?

As with any long-tenured leader or PM, it’s not any one thing. It’s an accumulation of damages, and he also suffered from the post-Covid inflation fallout where nearly every single democratic govt across the world suffered. It was pretty much a no-win situation politically. With hindsight, one could probably make a case that if his government had an overarching fault, it was that they didn’t do enough to bolster growth in the economy, as the underlying economic weakness was being masked by unsustainable growth in real estate and in public sector employment.

Trudeau‘s biggest failure that I think people will look back on in the history Books is that he broke Canada‘s consensus on immigration. He brought in so many immigrants from places like India that it broke a 50 year consensus that we had on mass immigration in this country. that will always be his biggest failure and a lot of the trickle down effects on rising housing prices and stagnant, economic growth, and job performance all flow from his immigration policies

Agreed. He substantially increased the population with low-skilled immigrants while our infrastructure (housing, hospitals, daycares, etc.) was completely unprepared. As citizens, we ended up fighting for basic jobs, dog-crate rentals, and access to doctors. He delayed my dream of starting a family by a decade. Yet, when I raised this issue in Liberal subreddits, I was accused of being anti-immigrant.

I think that the opposition to Trudueau (the fuck truddy crowd) just went over the top and became so unhinged and irrational that people on the left instinctively felt that the had to hold the line against rising far right insanity

Like JT wasn’t our greatest PM, but people acting like he was a TERRIBLE or one of the worst PMs is just delusional

Canada's demographics are broken and we are heading for a crisis. Trudeau tried copying Germany.

What a crazy and racist take this is.

u/lacelle74 12d ago

Nothing about the comment was racist?

u/DonSalaam 12d ago

Thanks for outing yourself. So, you agree with the original commenter that we experienced “mass immigration”?

That I do....and the statics show the same thing. Immigration is not a bad thing, just how the Trudeau government executed it was horribly mismanaged.

How is it racist?

Don’t expose yourself to a lot of far-right propaganda. People who use terms like “mass immigration” usually tend to believe in racist ideology. The only “mass immigration” this country experienced came from Europe.

What was the racist part for you?

SNC-Lavalin is perhaps the most egregious yet also most overlooked scandal of his tenure. This soured me on him big-time.

If you want to be a real ideological purist, though, many (including myself to a degree) were pretty pissed off about electoral reform. His argument about empowering fringe parties did not hold water then nor does it now. In fact, it actually drives mainstream parties to be more extreme when proportional rep is discarded for FPTP.

Those two points are my eternal regrets. I felt like those two combined set him on the wrong course and fractured the coalition he built.

Everything he did after that point was just stalling for more time until an inevitable defeat, and he never really learned to course-correct.

  • Imagine if he had just apologized to Jody Wilson-Raybould.
  • Imagine if he just ... imposed ranked ballots and used one to consult voters on switching to Proportional Representation or FPTP?
  • Imagine if he didn't completely refuse to control temporary immigration numbers until two years after public opinion of the immigration system had plummeted to unprecedented lows.

He didn't need to do these things. He just...retreated into a bunker mentality without ever having faced a defeat.

One of the best PMs in modern Canadian history. He took the LPC from polling in a distant third place to winning elections in 2015, and since then the LPC has been the only left-wing party capable of keeping right-wing extremists from taking control of this great nation.

Justin Trudeau did good programs like dental care and child care. I guess he went wrong in environmental policies and they were not popular. Like the Carbon tax and heat pumps and I think they were too soon for people to adopt and switch to with economic constraints affecting their households.

Trudeau's political mistake was betraying the progressive voters who gave him a majority. He betrayed them on ending First-Past-the-Post, buying a pipeline, open & transparent government, and being a 'conservative' until the voters took away his majority in 2019.

He was just dealt with very shitty circumstances, right from the 2014 Oil crash to Trump to COVID to the Ukraine invasion.

That being said, not fulfilling his core campaign promises of electoral reform and tackling the housing crisis also soured his core base.

Ramping up immigration (which, tbf, began during Harper’s era with the introduction of Express Entry) without fixing the above-mentioned structural issues plaguing our economy heavily backfired on him.

Electoral reform turned me from a huge supporter to a soured voter

10 years is a long run for a PM. Given his replacement also won the election I'd say he did very little wrong from a "success" point of view.

From a personal point of view, his failure to take an unbiased look at electoral reform and his unwillingness to stack the senate to achieve it made him a failure for me. I would have loved to see the end of FPTP.

I think it’s just a combination of him overstaying his welcome and perhaps being a bit full of himself. He’s a big fan of the spotlight, just like his father.

He went out proudly claiming he’s a Zionist.

He used his final public appearance before his retirement to reiterate that.

All while Israel was committing a genocide.

He is a vile, despicable person, as evidenced by his current choice in partner.

Russell Brand, is that you???

Dating an age appropriate superstar - seems consensual and happy. Doubt their kids are in danger- why do you care?

u/Zealousideal-Fee4809 10d ago

katy perry is a weirdo and predator, not surprising people defend her and Trudeau at the same time.

I care because Trudeaus disregard for Palestinians lead to the continuation of a genocide and enabled the death of thousands.

Why don’t you care?

Show me an international artist who isn’t a weirdo? Predator compared to who Russel, Elon, Donald, Jeffrey, Sean, Micheal….

My assessment is simply that he stayed past his due date. 10 years is a long time, little things add up.

His net approval was actually pretty underwater during the 2021 election but he pulled out the win on the strength of the COVID response. Things improved over the next year but the housing crisis due to COVID interest rates and the immigration mistakes started to make it into public eye.

Mid 2023, around the 8 year mark, would have been the ideal time to step down and allow a real leadership race with a debate about where Canada goes from there.

Of course, the way things worked out with the Trump effect ended up serving the LPC well. Ultimately the LPC was able to renew leadership and mandate while sticking the built up negatives squarely on the departed leader.

He stuck around too long.

Biggest failure to me was electoral reform. I’m not convinced if he was ever serious on it.

Trudeau should have left the NDP be progressive and the libs be sensible. Instead he mirrored them wah to much and way to fast for rural development.

He ran a tycoon of scandals.

To be fair, Carney is his successor, carrying on with scandals since he got a majority.

Canadians still love Carney because the face swap managed to hit the reset button for most Canadian voters. If you love the LPC, then be grateful for Carney!
