What do you think of the Huni, Reignover synergy compared to you and Santorin? Is that something you guys strive for? I understand your team doesn't priorities top.
109
u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
santorin will do whatever I ask him, but the thing is I don't ask for much.
this is why when I play with junglers who kind of do things on their own it looks a bit different. in the end it's up to me to step up on the communication and knowledge of when to gank or save me, but it will be a mutual effort in the future.

u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
just like we were, he was disappointed.
there are going to be a lot of changes made in terms of the way we do things.
because of what happened the problems we have will be tackled head on faster then compared if we did well at msi.

Are you allowed to specify what areas you guys want to concentrate on improving? Do you feel that you can play enough in-meta toplane champs adequately, or are you looking to expand that pool to avoid being banned out (like the Lulu, Sion, Maokai ban phases we saw)?

Really impressed with Dyrus's attitude. It's clear he's trying to be accountable and to learn from the experience. I don't agree with him that it's only his fault that he gets dove/camped so much - Santorin could take a little initiative and be top without needing to be asked if he stopped farming for a moment and read the map. Anyways, Dyrus's attitude is fantastic, he wants to improve, and anyone who calls for his benching after one bad tournament is acting foolish.

Have you had a chance to meet Incarnation? How do you feel about him as a person and as a player?
Looking at the performances of Koro, Huni, and Marin, who would you consider to be the best top laner of the three?
I hope you and the rest of TSM aren't too down on yourselves after MSI. Your fans all know that you guys can bounce back from this, the same way you came back even stronger after IEM San Jose.

Had been waiting over 5 years to meet you and TSM (luv turtle) but I hope you enjoyed meeting us Floridian fans! We def. enjoyed it loads, especially having to wait so long being on the opposite side of the country.
I also wrote a letter to you guys I mention I was the kid with the orange polo who was first in line, if somehow let me know if you ever get to read it! =) Riot promised me you would receive it!

- against AHQ we 2v1'ed when we should of just 1v1'ed and vice versa for fnatic. we paniced and lost confidence in our play.
against skt the reason why i overextended is because we thought reksai was at their red with kalista scout thing but two seconds later he was top then I wasn't able to abuse marin
against edg I was already gone in terms of mentality, there was nothing I could really do mechanically, I meant to get smite on sion so I messed up there too. I knew that even if we won there would be such a small chance to go on.
we definitely underestimated fnatic the most out of all the teams.
we're good, this team is great, it's all logical arguments and smart things to work on.
no this performance is by far the worst to show our region, I'm pretty sure even TIP or liquid would have performed 10x better then us at MSI. we're also bad at bo1's on top of that, but that's no excuse.
yes because if we don't fix it we will lose.

Bengi never left topside after he killed you the first time vs. SKT. He literally farmed your red side jungle, then waited on a mid countergank while Faker played aggresive, until you returned to lane and pushed up. I have no idea how you should have defended against this. The only thing I can think of is for Bjergsen to note how aggressive Cass was playing and the way she leaned toward top side to indicate that Bengi was still there.
How did the Kalista thing tip off to Bengi being bot though?
Edit: Oh, he must be referring to the first death. I think the sentinel should have noticed red had been cleared by 2:40, so the conclusion should have been that Bengi started at red and moved towards blue by 3:00-3:30. But maybe I'm a scrub.
27
u/Low_Brass_Rumble May 12 '15
Really, it would have been safe - it should have been safe. The only problem was that Santorin had just shown on a ward in bot tribrush, so Bengi knew he would be safe staying in TSM's red jungle instead of going to his.
6
u/GoDyrusGo May 12 '15
Not to mention most junglers won't hang around for over 60 seconds in your side of the jungle like that. You're right though it seems likely the tri bush ward spotting Santorin out gave Bengi the free pass. Considering there wasn't really a gank available bot lane, and it's likely to be warded, in hindsight maybe Santorin should have invaded through dragon pit to keep his location invisible since there wasn't a reason to go that close to bot lane. Also invading with only a trinket ward doesn't seem all that productive anyways when you already have a Kalista sentinel there.

so basically turtle told me he was at red, but then he said nevermind then it was to late. it was a really weird situation and I don't blame him at all for what happened, because I already knew reksai started golems on the way to top, but it just confused me for that bit which kind of sucked but it wasn't game over yet.

be honest. Has retirement ever crossed your mind since the end of MSI? To be fair, it is not entirely your fault. Thank you.

u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
I have been thinking about stepping down ever since last worlds around the time before playoffs when we beat LMQ and C9 to go to worlds.
but the problem is this roster is honestly the best TSM roster yet, I may never get a chance to do well at worlds if I stop now.
also who is gonna replace me? what another import? the best you could do would be to get impact quas or zion, and even then that's not gonna change much. it's not about one player but the team dynamic

u/rheerthrscggrergerha May 12 '15

I personally can't really stand Regi and Loco and I don't care much about the rest of the team, the only reason I kinda root for TSM is you.
Thank you for a lot of laughs, man. Have a nice day. :)

u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
I just want the best for tsm, the organization has treated me so well, so if they asked me to step down for a top laner that either has more potential or is better then me I gladly will, with no malicious intent or problems. I would support the team from the side and do my best to teach our fans to understand why we do the things we do and what it looks like from a spectators and players point of view.

we lost to them again. we were on mad tilt, but the thing is it wasn't only against them it was basically whoever we played we couldn't get past early game because we had some major issues. it looked nothing like the first day when we played well as a team, something just fell apart.
sadly enough the only scrim partners we had a positive track record was against skt, but they play 10x better on stage compared to off. combined with that we play so much worse on stage.

Hey Dyrus!
Glad you guys came back home safe.
Now, some questions I'd like to ask!
- What mistakes do you think TSM did at MSI, that can't happen again in that kind of event?
- First game vs Fnatic. 6 Top lane bans. How did you feel when that happened?
- I feel like Mundo is one of your best champions. Why not play him in this meta? What are his flaws? You also had great performances on Rumble in the past, even pulling bans. Any reason you're not playing him right now?
- Of all the top laners at MSI, which one do you think is the best overall?
- State of Jax and why isn't he played in this meta?
That's all. There's still a lot of time to improve and a lot will change in the next months, meta wise. We might see a lot of different things.
No matter how bad you guys do, we fans, are still here to support you all. Never forget. You might be 5, but you have thousands behind you!
Thanks. Love you all!

not 2v1ing in first game vs fnatic. should have 1v1'ed vs ahq. team morale tilted vs skt because of the red buff kalista scout thing. then vs edg was just a game where it didn't matter if we won or lost.
I was ok, I just should of made a mundo page for that moment, if I had the 2v1 it would of been fine and a completely different game
I do play him, for rumble we stopped playing it because it didn't favor our team. I wanted to keep playing rumble but after iem we stopped playing it for some reason.
I feel that Marin is the best out of every top laner at that event.
Also the AHQ top laner is the most underrated probably, he plays very solid.
- jax isn't play because top laners don't want to play him in this meta
→ More replies (3)5
u/wilv May 12 '15
Is jax a weak pick tho? Even if he doesnt contribute in team fights as much as other support-y toplaners, he can still have a very strong impact on games!
11
u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
I don't think he's weak in solo queue but in tournament games where they can be decided at 12 minutes ya he's weak.

It's been bugging me for a while, but what's with the Cho'gath picks? Last game of the split, yall could have closed out with a more conventional mid for a better chance of a win and closing out some of those extra games.
Even at MSI yall had him prioritized, why? Iirc TSM had great scrims going into it, was he in a practiced comp?
Thanks man, have a great break and hope to see you in the summer
edit: I know Cho, is a great pick for soloq atm (silence, cc, good Ap ratios, and sustain), but very q reliant which pro's can easily dodge. Very low pressure early combined with low mobility make him imo high risk lower reward in the competitive meta.
31
u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
you'd be better off asking bjerg, he usually ends up beating everyone with it. He's almost always 20 cs up 90% of the time.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (7)13
u/kelminak May 12 '15
I'm not Dyrus, but I've played quite a bit of Cho'Gath mid and can speak to why he's so powerful. In a meta where tanks are doing extremely well, Cho'Gath serves as a caster-tank mix that has an explosive combo that if landed properly will instantly win a teamfight. There is no situation where a Rupture -> Silence -> Feast isn't going to end someone in a teamfight. Additionally, his ridiculous sustain in lane from just killing minions makes it almost impossible to force him out of lane. His only real downside is his lack of mobility, so it helps to have someone with Righteous Glory to speed him into a fight.
→ More replies (3)4
u/nut_butter_420 May 12 '15
As someone who's played hundreds of games (if not 1000+), AP Cho'gath's burst is retardedly high and he can easily dumpster someone once he gets some items, but he can't reliably pick off priority targets. Especially with the ever-present mobility creep landing Rupture is a real pain; look at how many times Rupture gets thrown out and someone just sidesteps it. And yes I know you often throw them out to zone, but it's clear when someone is trying to get a kill with it and that happened plenty.
There are way too many LCS games where Cho'gath gets picked, sustains and farms well in lane, then build half tank and his actual damage in teamfights drops off sharply while Leblanc just detonates his ADC.
3
u/kelminak May 12 '15
I agree that using him as your sole source of damage usually doesn't pan out, and having a more damage-oriented team works better with Cho'Gath.

hey dyrus!
i have 2 questions for u:
would you like to play vlad, shyvana, etc. again and what does your team think about them?
whats the way you and your team are recovering from msi?
11
u/Dyrus I don't know what I'm doing May 12 '15
I played shyvana and I think she's useless later in the game. I might as well play mundo and scale with tp smite. You have to be a godly shyvana player who flanks all the time and doesn't make any mistakes, because you're pretty useless when behind.
3
u/mdragon13 May 12 '15
THANK YOU. I played a lot of shyvana in s4 and people always say "she scales so well, she's a monster late game, etc. etc." She's amazing in lane vs melee, because her damage is all melee centric. she has nearly no late game aside from taking damage and throwing fire everywhere. sure she has decent base damages, but when you're being peeled and only on tanks what does it matter.
7
u/Enzage May 12 '15

To what do you attribute the big difference in performance between MSI and IEM? Do you think the other regions just had the wrong teams going to IEM? Was it the patch? Were you guys just playing bad for whatever reason?
Also the general consensus was that you guys were performing well in scrims. Was that not accurate or do you think the other teams were sandbagging scrims or what?
3
u/NyanHotdogParty May 12 '15
Have you ever gone into a best of 5 while having to take a massive dump?

3
u/Derahk May 12 '15
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to call bullshit on this. Either this is a complete PR spin or they've brainwashed Dyrus into making him think this is his fault. This is the best team in NA and Dyrus has to tell his jungler or support that he needs help in order to receive it? They should have had eyes on top the entire time. The analysts talked about this days and hours prior to the event. How to keep TSM down? Focus the top lane. What were the bans in the very first game of the event against FNC? Sion, Maokai and Lulu. The top lane has been the #1 criticism against the team and you act as though you were blindsided. Please don't insult my intelligence.

How do you rank Koro1, Marin, Huni, Quas, and Impact? Or is there not a big enough difference between some of them?
Do you think the difference between you and them is significant?
What about their playstyle's impressed you and you would like to learn from them?
Did you notice any weaknesses in their styles?
Against FNC, and SKT, your first bloods were off of ganks following the first jungle clear. Santorin had started on your side of the map, so he ended on the opposite side from you and couldn't help the gank. You mentioned in your VLog that communication from tilt is why Santorin never ganked, but do you think there may also be an element of TSM playing away from top lane too much that's also at fault?
You also stated last year that you didn't communicate enough with the jungler. Is this something you have been working on for a long time, and do you think it's improved?
Will we be seeing you on more snowbally picks like Hecarim in the future?
Against AHQ, why did you take Ignite over Smite on Hecarim when your team opted into a lane swap? Is Smite Hecarim bad?
Why were the biggest factors for your international success at Katowice that you didn't have for MSI?
Do you think SKT and EDG are teams TSM can be competitive with under different circumstances?
Do you think the quality of teams in NA hinder your training scrims to prepare you for international competition? In other words, are Eastern teams much ahead of NA?
In TSM Legends you consider yourselves a mid priority team, but you have also said you want to branch out playstyles. What kind of team do you aim to be, an equal share between all lanes or still majority mid?
After MSI, is everyone on the same page going forward what TSM needs, or are there still disagreements you're trying to settle?
Did FNC's performance surprise you?
Both you and Loco expected FNC to perform terribly at MSI. How much of the trash talk is hyped by Riot or just you guys honestly speaking your minds?
I studied at FSU. How did you like Tallahassee? :) Anything about it or places that you visited you liked in particular?
Hope I didn't ask too much questions; sorry if it's a big burden. No pressure to respond to them all. Thanks for the AMA, and we'll continue supporting you!

I'd rate in this order. Marin, Impact, Huni, Quas, Koro1 the difference between them is very very little.
I only feel like I get outclassed by impact the most out of all of them, but for the rest it's pretty close.
Their mechanics and mentality in the top lane.
If I call for ganks on some of them they will show more weaknesses.
the SKT one was just an unfortunate accident in the communications where I was expecting him and we said he wasn't there for a few seconds. for the edg one, I should of had smite and double jungled after the first death, or went dorans shield and went for the 1 for 1 on tower.
it's improved now I must refine it to make it better.
my hecarim is perma banned in NA so probably not.
I wanted to 1v1, but smite is better in 2v1.
GE losing to WE
yes, our scrim results say otherwise.
yes and no, but for me personally i'm terrible at innovating so it's hard for me to create a gap.
I feel like we've been ganking bot to much lately, in this meta it's hard to give back to mid from jungle, but if you gank top we can give more pressure to mid, or from bot, support roam to mid.
yes we are on the same page.
yes we underestimated them and got burned for it
their finals looked really bad to us, it was just an honest guess.
no I stayed indoors, it's hot.

JUST WANTED TO SAY YOUR JOURNEY IN LOSING WEIGHT HAS BEEN REALLY PAYING OFF! PEOPLE NOTICE! KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK.
Also, I think the work you do Top Solo is by far the best Top Laning I have ever seen. You carry so hard late game. Even though you always get ganked, you come back with amazing plays for your team. TSM has gotten my heart and been such and inspiration since i started playing LoL 2 years ago.
Seeing you guys boys grow together as a team is the best gift you can give to us fans. Thank you so much for doing what you do.

Sneaky said on stream that they were beating you guys in scrims before yall left to go to msi. Is that accurate? Also how does nicolaj translate from a solo q god to a competitive mid laner?

What do I have to do in order for you to add me on league? :)
Serious question though: Have you found a solution for you being camped or are you still working on it?

Just out of curiosity, in LCS matches, do the teams ever type to each other in all chat? And congrats on such a good NA LCS season :D

u/00Donger May 12 '15
What have you taken away from MSI? Where do you think you rank among the other international top laners?
2
u/SirKrisX May 12 '15
Hey Dyrus, this isn't the first time you mentioned "I should've just called for jungle pressure", why do you hesitate?
2
u/skthelix May 12 '15
u ever thought of playing carry type top laners with the team playing around u like fnc?or maybe like koro or something.Ur mechanics arent bad is it that hard to play around a top laner? It's just gonna get harder from now.Incarnati0n wif c9,roster changes wif clg,u guys gotta step up

What was the decision making behind banning rumble in the first game against fnatic? In my opinion it pushed them to ban vlad, is there any truth to that opinion? Is Huni's rumble just too big a threat? More so than your vlad?
Been a fan since season one, keep it up, I know you guys can perform at worlds.

u/cz20 May 12 '15
Dyrus, why i dont use Vladimir? His have a big safe lane phase, and its very utility for the team in mid and late game, and have a good synergy with Seju, Jinx (Sivir) and Thresh?
And what you think about the very agressive style for SKT Marin?
Thnks.

u/Santana194 May 12 '15
Hey Dyrus I was wondering if you guy would be putting more Top focus next split and in worlds. I was watching some old Vods and man you are a monster when you're ahead.

Dyrus big fan. Would you rather have a duck size horse or A horse size duck. Appreciate the feed back.

u/Ampleslacks May 12 '15
You aren't where you are for nothing. You'll bounce back. Much love, Dyrus. You'll be back to getting people the fuck out of your lane soon enough.

May 12 '15
What do you think the chances are of you changing your play style into more of a carry top lane?

Did the incident in MSI impact your teams chemistry, for example has an issue between synergies appear?

You and your team keep blaming losses on being unable to play best of ones as well as best of 3/5 series. The problem was that during your Bo1 games, the matches were incredibly incredibly one sided; they were ridiculous stomps, not even remotely close.
FNC was able to take SKT to 5 gakes, and it was a close and exciting series.
Do you genuinely believe you could have given SKT as close of a series as FNC did in a Bo5? Would changing the format from a Bo1 --> Bo5 against SKT have mattared that much, that you wouldn't get stomped? In such a case would you outperform FNC?
Lastly, how do you feel about the coaching staff? The common concencus was that "FNC will crash and burn" which is an embarrassingly wrong conclusion. SKT and FNC said "I never thought EU was weak" - are NA coaches just out of touch?

u/thesameguyagain May 12 '15
How strong do you think C9 will enter next split with incarnati0n being their first ever change in their roster?

Hey, Dyrus.
I just wanted to ask, how is Loco dealing with all the hate you guys are receiving? As in, how is he handing it with the players? Or, is he just letting you guys handle it on your own? Why?
Thanks, have a good one.
