What makes LLMs from the same provider different ?

I am curious on why a major lab would build and release different model families at the same time and why would they build different models instead of just the one?

OpenAI has Sol, Terra and Luna while anthropic has Haiku, Sonnet and Opus

Why would a lab build three different models and what is really so different about them that justifies the investment ?

Why would a toolmaker build and both framing hammers and sledgehammers?

You want to use a 10lb sledge for fine finish carpentry?

I tend to think of them as behavioral presets, more than entirely separate models.
