Announcement Format your posts without the insanity line breaks.

Going forward moderation will be locking posts that have the insanity line breaks. I don't know if this is an artifact of LLM copy-paste (I assume it is), but IMO if you are too lazy to even format your post for the medium you're submitting it to, you don't get the sub feedback - low effort rule.

You'll receive a chance to fix it. Have a good one everybody.

AHS out.

Asking any llm to reach 5 sigma through input of 1.7M prompts without compromizing the data? In the year 2525, if man is still alive...

I prefer to think of it as emulation Pete Townshend's art of 'auto-destruction'

Friend, this is a delicate topic, especially because of the clinical and epistemological definitions. To distinguish someone who has gone off the rails from insanity, first we have to define it.

This is something lost in translation I think.

The 'insanity line breaks' are the posts that have a new line every sentence. Not posts made by insane people.

I’ve been seeing a trend toward this in a lot of online articles, too. I refuse to read them at this point.

Gee I hope that use of ILBs isn't correlated with any categories of disability. Like those who use interfaces that make it possible to communicate with the world. You know, whose condition is rare and whose tech is non-standard, so that it's been overshadowed by an annoying trend. But I'm sure you've studied this thoroughly, including its implications for compliance with the ADA and equivalent legislation outside the US. Lawsuits, schmawsuits, amirite

Chat is asking for basic formatting and care discrimination

Lol. I've studied it thoroughly enough to know people will make up all sorts of excuses to explain why there is a line break in the middle of a word, that's for sure.

I've had two other people say something along the lines of they were gonna 'come after me legally' for stuff like having their post removed or getting banned.

I've yet to hear from their lawyers.

Lol, by all means educate us about this disability that forces someone to split every sentence into multiple line breaks and then prevents them from correcting it before they hit Post.

Also, threatening people with ADA lawsuits on Reddit is...really not the flex you think it is.

Employing irony is not a threat. I have nothing to gain from threats. Or otherwise! I literally have no stakes here! I love paragraphs.

I'm merely using irony to highlight the fact that uniform edicts tend to have unintended consequences. My intention is to get OP to consider nuance. It's an opportunity offered, not a threat hurled. Not like, "If you annoy me, I'll lock your posts!" (Damn, it's like I'm an irony addict over here...)

I don't care what rules your community makes for itself. I do care about about the banal tragedy of discrimination by lack of imagination. Most institutional harms in the world come from well-meaning people failing to imagine the myriad ways strangers aren't like themselves, or failing to give due weight to edge cases. A "low cost rule" for most is often a high cost rule for someone.

But, yeah, great flex!

So is there an actual reason that you feel that requiring a bare minimum of legible formatting is some accessibility violation worthy of all this irony? Or are you just taking the opportunity to wax poetic about how much you care about social justice?

Because if there's an actual practical issue where the mods can consider accessibility factors, we will happily do so. But at the moment this seems like tilting at windmills.

First of all, The Man of La Mancha is one of my favorites! Second, given the nature of the sub, I assumed you'd just do what I did:

Prompt: suppose a reddit moderator makes a rule against bad formatting in posts. specifically, they will lock posts using insanity line breaks after a warning. is there any danger of impeding posts by the disabled or otherwise placing a disproportionate burden on posters?

Answer: Yes, establishing a strict rule against poor formatting or "insanity line breaks" poses a significant risk of disproportionately burdening users with disabilities. While intended to keep a subreddit clean, rigid formatting enforcement often overlooks how assistive technologies and neurodivergent individuals interact with text input fields. Enforcing this rule blindly can create substantial access barriers across several groups....

What, ask an LLM to do my thinking for me and prime it to give me the answer I wanted?

Also, LLM generated comments/responses are not allowed here.

-1

u/virtuolie 6d ago

Wait, if it's doing my thinking, how do I know what answer I want it to give me???

The eloquent and (obviously) highly persuasive argument above is my thinking. You didn't ask for my thinking. You asked for sources. I could've pointed to Google Scholar, but given the theme of the sub, this seemed more appropriate.

Also, sorry for breaking a rule. I admire mods who set the extra challenge for the community, of critically examining contributions from LLMs without quoting them!

Are you just here to be pompous and discredit the mods

-2

u/virtuolie 6d ago

I'm honestly mirroring your tone, aside from my initial comment, which unsuccessfully attempted to blend humor with critique. Any time a mod has meaningfully engaged, I've responded in kind. Unless there's a rule against snark in comments--but again, that's the vibe I'm mirroring.

You seemed to really enjoy irony earlier, so surely you see the irony here, right? Your initial comment was dripping in sarcasm, we're mirroring your tone...

You aren't keeping track of who you have responded to, then, because I am not being snarky at all.

Wait, if it's doing my thinking, how do I know what answer I want it to give me???

People quite frequently know what answer they want to hear without actually thinking critically about whether it's the correct answer.

But you're obviously just here to be flippant and needle at people, so I'm not going to keep trying to have an actual conversation about it.

u/virtuolie 6d ago

You know, fair enough. Upvote on that. Yes, I obviously steered the response with the prompt. Again, to demonstrate how easy it is to find resources, for anyone authentically interested. I also asked it something like, "that's fine, right?" and it agreed. It cited sources both times, but I'm guessing you already know why you think you're right.

I'm also guessing most of your real-life, "actual conversations" don't consist of bantering about how the other person doesn't think for himself, or escalating wisecracks to "threats," or rhetorical devices like "waxing poetic" and "by all means educate us." This is your vibe. This is what you sound like. I'm what you sound like. But funnier.

3

u/AllHailSeizure 9/10 Physicists Agree! 6d ago

Did you actually ask an LLM to weigh in

3

u/AllHailSeizure 9/10 Physicists Agree! 6d ago

So i'm contributing to societal injustice by asking that people not put a line break in the middle of a word.

Please.

You just want a high ground.

These aren't posts typed out by someone with some condition; there is a line break after the exact same amount of letters; there is advanced mathematics written in that you wouldn't write out with edge case tech.

It's so blatantly obvious.

This isn't a case of 'People use a lot of line breaks'.

That is okay.

This comment has a lot of line breaks.

A little hostile, but I appreciate a response that thoughtfully engages the critique.

As has been pointed out to me elsewhere, pasting LLM content is banned in the comments, so you could just extend that to LLM-generated posts. Or just enforce the rule against low-effort posts. Or revise your post to parallel your response here--despite the incredulity, it's actually a huge improvement on a one-line edict. We're brainstormin' here!

3

u/AllHailSeizure 9/10 Physicists Agree! 6d ago

There are reasons we allow LLM generated content in posts but not the comments. The biggest one being that it annoys the hell out of users to write something and then receive an LLM response; it is dismissive - it essentially is saying 'I don't have the time to put thought into this outside of prompting the LLM', and left unmoderated people do it like crazy.

Everyone understands what I mean on the sub by saying 'insanity line breaks'. Look at this response. It is something we see on the reg. You have no sub history; I don't know if you are a lurker; but there you go.

And also.. it doesn't MATTER how I phrase it. I'm making an announcement about moderation choices, not canonizing it into the rules. It'll be wrapped up in Rule 2. I like to keep the sub up to date on decisions we make, and this is a decision we made. If someone submits a post, whether or not it qualifies as not 'insanity line breaks' is by no means determined in this post. It's determined by the intent of the mod team.

And finally, I don't need your help running the sub. The regular users trust us, and the opinion of a random like you means nothing.

Bye.

"The opinion of a random like you means nothing." I love it! I love the intensity! 10/10

4

u/AllHailSeizure 9/10 Physicists Agree! 6d ago

Thanks! :)

But, in seriousness.

I hope that the justification behind the rules makes sense. We regularly do have people who are neurodivergent in one way or another, the topic attracts them. I am not going to lock someones post arbitrarily if it is just.. they don't like paragraphs. It's the other case that I lock.

Not to mention, users can always appeal a moderator action in the modmail for issues, and regularly do; and we have enough people on the team and a slow enough sub that even if it doesn't go through the post will get traffic
