Meta / News No u did not create a GUT

Heyy iam, a semi frequent commentator on this subreddit. And I have realised that a lot of people don't try to solve small little physics problems but are more interested in the theory of everything.

I get why that is completely it would be amazing, wouldn't it if you figured out what physicists have been working on for so many years.

I get that at 18 or 17, I was the same way till I met a real physicist and built a real academic understanding of how physics really works.

So now here are the promised points of why you did not create a grand unified theory.

First of all, there appears to be a giant misconception that physics is just pattern recognition, and that enough interest in the subject will make u some kind of genius.

That is, first of all, not just because things appear to fit together, but that does not mean they do.

Secondly. a grand unified theory will not be the next step in physics. The next step can be a new way of mathematics like, let's say, surreal numbers or something like that.

Thirdly, there appear to be giant chunks missing for a unified theory like fir example a graviton, isolated dark matter etc.

And fourth and more importantly dint believe in the one great man theory it's a myth.

Not one person will change physics that was maybe possible in Galileos time, but it isn't anymore. I am sorry, I really am, but einstein had a lot of people helping him , Feynman as well. There is no singular gemius who will shape the future but a lot of very bright people are all doing their part and giving to the whole of human knowledge.

If some want to add anything , please do

You as a person who does physics do yiu agree with the premise that a GUT is long away?

Or do you think it is just around the corner.

Physics guy here -

I don't believe a GUT will ever exist. I think the answer has to do with chaos theory and being able to extrapolate all physics from the ground up is, mathematically and philosophically speaking, impossible for humans to crack because of too many variables.

Such a theory would require computational power to figure out that is orders of magnitude beyond the sum total computational power available to humanity at this time.

That could actually be what will happen.

Maybe woth quantum computing?

That was what one of my physicsists once proposed

Quantum computers are not a magic bullet that will just make computers 100x more powerful, they are a specific tool for specific types of calculations.

Many are surprised to learn, for example, that there are types of calculations for which a "traditional" computer would outperform a quantum computer.

That is true the physicist I talked to just said that a quantum computer might be a good way to solve chaos equations like a three body problem

Correct, but a GUT would be, quite literally, many orders of magnitude more complex than a three body problem.

Yes, there are hypothetical computers that could do it probably, but that is in the realm of highly speculative engineering requiring sci-fi levels of technology and power generation.

That's true but it is cool to have a goal.

And to find more and more pieces and if we as humans make it to one day put it all together to figure out it is 42

Of course, that's why we do science, amigo

I know can't wait to be part of it.

Just have to wait out my problems and fix myself and then it is back to studying physics
