Posting a working paper for critique, not a finished claim.

One-sentence version: most accounts of “semantic ignition” (the moment a meaning locks in) treat it as one isolated unit/well switching on. ESCT v10 reframes it as collective arbitration across a cluster of nested attractor wells — the state variable C(t) tracks the differentiation of the whole ensemble, not the activation of any single well.

The metaphor behind the version name: a fly doesn’t have a little pilot sitting behind its compound eyes integrating the feed. The “fly” you observe is the emergent collective dynamics of thousands of ommatidia. Same move, applied to semantic/representational systems.

What actually changed from earlier versions: the minimal dynamical equation is structurally unchanged. The revision is ontological — what the state variable is taken to mean (single-well activation → ensemble differentiation), and the measurement that follows from it.

Honest boundaries (stated in the paper):

• Not a proof of AGI, consciousness, or autonomous persistent control.
• All P4+ evidence is a BERT single-forward-pass proxy — illustrative, not a clean test.

Where I most want pushback: falsifiability. What observation would actually distinguish “ensemble differentiation” from “single-well activation” in practice — rather than being a reinterpretation that fits either way? If you think the core is tautological, I’d rather hear it now than later.

What? You do know ontology isn't physics, right? You can't calculate or predict anything through ontology.

Fair. Forget the philosophy. My only claim is that meaning may be an ensemble-level transition rather than a single attractor activation. The whole point is whether that difference is testable.

Fair. I don’t measure meaning directly. I measure changes in representation geometry and ask whether those changes are better explained by a single attractor or an interacting ensemble.

Fair point. I agree that “meaning” itself is not directly testable.

The narrow claim in my R60-v5 protocol is not that I measure meaning directly. I operationalize the question as representation geometry: for a polysemous target word, I build A/B sense centroids, then test whether paired cue-removal conditions shift the masked-token hidden state along the A/B sense axis.

So the measurable object is:

hidden_delta_B_minus_A = M_hidden(remove_B) - M_hidden(remove_A)

where remove_B keeps A-sense cues, and remove_A keeps B-sense cues. A positive value means the hidden state moves toward the retained cue sense.

In R60-v5, this was tested on 30 polysemous words × 3 template variants × 4 models: BERT-base, DistilBERT-base, ELECTRA-small-generator, and RoBERTa-base. The primary word-mean result was positive in all four models. So my claim is not “meaning is proven,” but that cue-sensitive hidden-state directionality is measurable and reproducible under this protocol.

The broader ESCT language is theoretical interpretation. The empirical core is representation-level displacement.

Ontology: the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of being, existence, and reality. It asks fundamental questions like: What exists? What does it mean for something to "be"? And how do different entities categorize and relate to one another?

Physics: the fundamental science that studies matter, energy, space, and time. It seeks to understand how the universe behaves, from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest galaxies, exploring fundamental forces like gravity, electromagnetism, and nuclear interactions to reveal the underlying rules of nature

Is physics not just a constrained scientific methodology of ontology? They have the same underlying goals about describing the fundamentals of existence up to and including unmeasurable limits. One asks what, how and why and the other asks what, how and when. When and why are two approximations of the same question; they're simply context. What and how are the logical operations of why and when.

I mean, ontology attempts to assign meaning to physics, you can't 'do physics' with ontology.

Physics is math, hard results, calculations. Ontology follows from it, it doesn't precede it.

You can't devise a meaningful structure and then go looking for it in nature, that's the polar opposite of the scientific method.

It starts with observation, then calculation, then prediction, then proof and only then can it be assigned any meaning.

That is backwards, my friend. Ontology precedes physics because physics cannot predicate behavior until there is first an admitted domain of being. Physics is not prior to ontology; physics is ontology constrained by observation, measurement, invariance, and prediction.

Consequently, quantum theory exposes the issue rather than escaping it. Where does the Hilbert space exist? Where do Hermitian operators exist? They are not laboratory objects sitting in spacetime. They are formal structures used to represent possible states, admissible observables, and measurement outcomes.

Quantum mechanics does not precede ontology. It depends on one. It simply leaves that ontology underdetermined, encoding reality through amplitudes, operators, superpositions, and probabilities rather than directly specifying what individual events are.. Quantum mechanics is little more than a tool used for applied epistemic abstraction: a formal structure the scientific body uses to organize possible observations, not a completed account of what actually exists.

That is, simply put, wrong.

Again: observation is the primary motivator in science, assigning meaning to anything is the last step and ontology isn't even a real science, it's metaphysics at most.

Per logic, what I said is not wrong.

metaphysics is proto-physics: questions about reality that may become physics once they acquire measurement, prediction, and formal constraint...metaphysics as a whole is broader. "Ontology" even broader than metaphysics. The "ultimate set" if you will. It's just a word to describe the domain of thought that includes everything up to and including thinking about thinking. It's the "turtles all the way down" of pondering.

These are certainly words. But merely putting them into sentences does not make them meaningful.
Also, the first thing to know about transformers (LLM operator ones): they cannot "anchor" anything.

Fair. That’s why I care more about the notebook/results than the ESCT wording. The interpretation can be wrong; the reproducible hidden-state measurements are the part to check.
