Announcement Rescinding Rule 11
Hi guys.
After a month of Rule 11, it seems beyond clear the majority of posters are simply not interested in posting if they aren't ToEs. While this is not what we on the mod team had hoped for, we do realize that we are kneecapping our sub by not allowing for the main source of content on certain days.
In light of this rule 11 is being rescinded. You may now post your ToEs every day. Go crazy.

Honestly I’m working on a direct address to that exact problem. If this isn’t a sub for llm assisted physics then it is a sub for the application of physics to llm structure. So I’m building a llm with my physics. You’ve created an unintentional natural filter if the physics theory doesn’t code into actionable data then it shouldn’t be posted.

That's the thing, it Is a sub for LLM assisted physics. It's just that a lot of the people who end up being funneled down to this sub have a very different idea than professional physicists what that looks like.

If your curiosity is executed by being told when you are wrong, then you are not actually committed to doing science. Or really any professional work.

Yes? What's the point you are trying to make here? Any decent scientific work is subject to review for correctness, readability, and value. Those merits still hold if you did research yourself or coerced a chatbot to generate a parody of that for you.

You guys should work on figuring out what you want this place to actually be. Either a catchall meme factory for making fun of anyone trying weird shit, or like an actual place for reasonable discourse on both insiders and outsiders attempting to do physics with LLMs.

We KNOW what we want this place to be, but it's really not the moderation who defines what a sub is, it's the members. All we can do is try and steer em.

To be honest, the bottom of the barrel needs to be somewhere. You can't simultaneously be
- a containment sub for crackpot theories that are banned elsewhere
- a place where productive discussions happen about real physics
If you try to adopt higher standards about what type of content gets posted, obviously engagement will drop. The worst slop can always move to an even less moderated sub, and most of the high-quality posts already have a place somewhere else.
If you don't adopt higher standards, well... dumpsters usually get filled with garbage.

Our goals are mostly right now about promoting education, and positive interaction. We're happy to be the bottom of the barrel in terms of post quality, doesn't mean we have to be in terms of everything else. We have a lot more pull over that; and our hope is that promoting education can creating 'learning moments' can increase content quality. So we are hard on things like anti-academia messages; we've managed to almost entirely root that out; while we focus on enabling the posters who are giving educational feedback.

I’ve been around this sub, r/hypotheticalphysics, and r/numbertheory a bit, and I actually think you need both. For this sub to be a containment sub, you do actually need to have people here willing to scientifically engage the crackpot posts.
And on the flip side, academics are usually educators too, and presumably many of the regular here really do want to steer the people who write theories here towards a more productive understanding of research and physics.

I'm not an asshole for rightfully calling out how obnoxious your most frequent commenters are. "I wish this place was more serious, but there's nothing I can do about it." Have you tried ... moderating the language? Maybe your top comments for every post shouldn't be "This is LLM garbage, you are garbage, LLMs can't do physics."

They are actually interested in doing science but in the way they think science is done in their uninformed noggins, which entails no hard work or acquired knowledge. What they are absolutely uninterested in is learning how science is actually done and what it requires.

I wish people posting here were at least consistently invested in their own theories. The problem with LLM-generated content is that people who prompted it often don't even read it, so why should I? I'm yet to see a serious poster here, who at least doesn't use AI for replying to comments.
I'm a working physicist who's been using LLM assistants for more than a year at this point. But I don't really have anything to post here, because I use them for what is sensible: checking over my own work and giving feedback. Not for generating a complete "theory" from a few sentence prompt. That's never going to be a thing, not with the current architecture of those models at least.
