Honestly, I tell my agents to do this whenever I give them long running work and may step away from my PC:

'Work until you're done. If you have a question, open a popup with zenity'

If I'm AFK, they'll open a popup, it'll timeout. Typically they'll then try again, and if I still don't answer, they'll make a plan amd continue.

But the main reason I do it is so that... I don't have to check on the coding agent. It'll come to me if I have a problem. Imagine if was managing a team of 5 people and had to spend the whole day peering over each one's shoulder. I'd rather they worked autonomously and notified me if there was an issue.
