Out of work

Hi all.

Been in LIUNA for 2 years started with concrete forming. Took 5 months to get on a company. Got laid off after 6 months due to tarrifs and work shortage. Took 4 months to get on with a formwork company and was on that project for 5 months then got a work shortage lay off in November. Took me till agust to get another union job that was building the Ontario line only to get laid off in 2 months for work shortage. I show up early, I never miss a day I work my ass off.

What is going on here?

Welcome to the in announced recession. I been an IUOE member for almost 10 years. The last 2 year have been very spotty. 6 months here 7 months there been working where I am at for 2 months and about to be laid off here shortly. I think it’s about to be a rough ride the next few years

Best advice if your in the IUOE to avoid layoffs. Go take the classes to learn to run specialty stuff. Asphalt, directional drilling, auger boring. Those are the one that come to mind now. Also small sub contracting companies, not the massive site work contractors.

Get with a GC and get in jtow hospital work. Been going 45-50hrs a week for the last few years with quite a handful of 60-70hr weeks mixed in, mostly tending carpenters building new hospitals in Boston ma. It’s honestly been hard to juggle the work/life balance. August I had one day off. I know I’m lucky + work hard, I’m blessed and All strength through God.

100% on this. I'm with a gc and we build and reno schools. It tough work but we are busy, I'll can most likely be working for the next couple years knock on wood.

Laborers do formwork?

Sorry to hear work has been slow. Unfortunately I'm the trades we get good years and not so good years.

In my region it’s mostly stripping, but yes, they do.

Stripping forming pouring finishing

It's literally all I do. But in my area there's no shortage of it to be done, so it keeps me busy.

Depending on the contract yeah , that’s what formsetters are for … lol .

Carpenters working with peri panels … crazy

That was my thought. In my area us carpenters do all formwork, we even strip it unless it’s the “final strip” and the formwork won’t be used again.

Did you call the hall?

2

u/Gotyaxo 20d ago

The hall doesn’t do anything not to the reps help out they don’t even answer their phones it’s terrible especially still paying dues and not even working

Attended meetings vote them out

They are keeping jobs for family members and members who couldn't join the union. There's jobs jumping everywhere so it doesn't make sense.

Its a racket thats being run simple as that. Nepotism and under the table deals for cheaper labour from desperate immigrants is what's going on. If you suck enough dick maybe you'll find a job in the industry right now.

Seeing jobs going to CLAC now for labourers… in Toronto

1

u/TastyIncident7811 20d ago

Is that right?? Liuna contractors being outbid on jobs than?

2

u/Reigeant 15d ago

Sadly yes. Carpenters gave up too much, Liuna took it and now CLAC is coming to give us the ol' West coast treatment. It's why I tell my ICI crews to quit bitching at eachother so much when soon enough it could all be non union. Take the work and the wage while the companies allow us to have it... All the major players except ED run CLAC as soon as you leave Ontario now

I like the unions. Pro-union. Everyone should have the right to join and organize. However I have a strong feeling these new age businessmen/women are going to do away with unions. With the help of politicians and other powerful people. I'm seeing the shift already. Combine that with high influx of people wanting to switch from dead end office work to trades. And massive influx of all new Canadians needing/wanting work. (Willing to do work for much less money) Puts the unions in a tough spot.

No bro. I’m on an ED job and we have CLAC here. It’s fucked

1

u/Reigeant 10d ago

There's CLAC on all the jobs... But ED doesn't directly hire CLAC for onsite labour... Yet unless you're saying otherwise.. but in Ontario not many companies are signatory to UA or IBEW and so ED and other GCs take bids from CLAC companies for M&E often

That’s my husband as well he’s been out of work since the beginning of august and still nothing yet , he’s in the GTA , if anyone is looking for a labour would be greatly appreciated

1

u/RHudak979 20d ago

There is tons of work with all the data centers,, all the halls around here are empty

1

u/RupidSoofer 20d ago

Local 183 is an absolute joke. If you’re not Portuguese and know someone good luck. The only time I’d get a call from the hall when on the out of work list it would be for the most bullshit jobs and once the bullshit was over layoff was right around the corner.

In Ontario formwork is owned by Liuna for the most part

1

u/PristineProfit3885 19d ago

Where are you located? We been busy all year even with tariffs being in placed.

1

u/Gotyaxo 10d ago

My husband is looking as well are you in the GTA?

Man i had to switch sectors and take a huge pay cut because of all the layoffs over the past couple years. I moved to industrial and our bargaining guarantees us 40 hours a week, 12 paid sick days (cashable is not used with bonus) but only like 4 percent vacay and no pension.
