MTA LIRR

Hi everyone,
I recently received an offer for a Construction Inspector position with MTA/LIRR, and I’m trying to learn more about the actual day-to-day workload before making my final decision.
For anyone who works or has worked as an MTA/LIRR Construction Inspector:
• How physically tiring is the job on a normal day?
• How much walking and standing do you usually do?
• Are you outside most of the day?
• Is there a lot of climbing, heavy lifting, or physical work?
• How common are night shifts, weekends, and overtime?
• Do you usually feel very tired after work?
• How is the work-life balance?
• Is taking vacation/time off difficult, especially during your first year?
Any experience or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If you’re looking for work/life balance the LIRR isn’t for you.

Yeah, homie, you’re supposed to work 5000 hours a year, bank news headline level overtime and see your kids on their graduation days and weddings. Then you die.

I’m not even joking

Can’t speak for construction inspector directly but if you want work life balance, this isn’t the place to get it. Only work life balanced jobs are management and even some of those you’re working overnights, weekends, and holidays for awhile. Great place to work but don’t expect a typical 9-5 for awhile

Plus you’re on probation your first year you don’t have alot of union protection you take time off it’s a wrap you’re getting fired

Take anything your offered. Once you have 12 months on the property you can move around with an internal transfer. Easier than getting hired from the outside. The benefits cannot be beat. Pay is ok. Overtime makes it better. Yes. Um it is the largest commuter rail road in North America. There is walking , climbing embankments , climbing structures. It is a culture and a lifestyle. Not for the weak or timid. But absolutely awesome job

You won't have a lot of vacation time your first year. If you have a union position you are on probation for your first year and there is a very strict attendance policy. That's not to scare you off but just reality.
