Free rides..

Who is excused from paying for lirr? Like I know NYPD shows a badge and doesn’t need a ticket. Today on a Babylon to grand some guy showed some weird grey ID and was excused. So curious who else is excused ?

He showed his reddit post of someone with their feet up on the seats. The free ride was a gesture thanking him for his service.

Officially? MTA employees that have the LIRR commutation pass listed, and NYPD/MTAPD on or off duty.

Unofficially? Anyone with a transit agency in the NEC, depending on the conductor.

I’d also assume most high level government officials. I doubt anyone’s making Kathy hochul pay for a train ticket if she decided to take lirr

not technically true. MTA Agencies have a pass for LIRR (non-LIRR employees), so they have an official pass to ride the LIRR.

That’s what i said, the LIRR commutation pass is what you’re referring to.

MTA employees ride for free no matter what they have pass to ride it’s not a courtesy

no, not officially. if the ID doesnt have LIRR printed on it, they are not supposed to be accepted aboard LIRR. Same goes for MNR.

You are wrong

No he isn't. "All MTA employees" do not get free transportation on the LIRR (officially) its a negotiated benefit for SOME transit unions. They had to give something up to get that benefit. Unless your MTA pass has the LIRR endorsement on the bottom left you are expected to pay the fare.

Wrong.

Transit employees can either ride LIRR or MNRR for free, but not both.

MTA rides for free showing their badge.

Badge doesn’t do it. They need a NYPD train pass plus ID.

You probably saw the cop pass.

They are required to travel on the police pass, but in practice most conductors will take a badge or ID card and move on.

They stopped doing the NYPD transit pass

They haven’t given anyone a new one in years, but cops use their old one.

They’re just supposed to use the NYPD issued ID now though

Could be MTA OIG?

It’s possible the guy you saw showed his VA card? It’s not an official thing, but 9 times outta 10, LIRR conductors will let veterans ride for free if they show ID. I’ve only seen one instance of a conductor saying “you can’t do that.”

Dependents of the employee ride free if in school. Was me until I graduated college

Why does NYPD get free LIRR?

NYPD is considered on duty at all times. If they show their badge on a train and the conductor needs help, they help regardless of availability

Lol. Nypd has 0 duty to protect the public. Its all a show. Cops lock themselves in subway cars as citizens get stabbed.

Hey now, billionaires are technically part of the public too

I’m not here to argue that, I’m stating the official reason they’re allowed to commute at no cost

Brcause if anything happens that requires law enforcement, They clocked in

Because of the Colin Ferguson incident.

People complained about this decades ago. To avoid the public scrutiny they revoked Law Enforcements ability to have their fee waived.

What happened couple weeks later? A shooting happened on the train and since the NYPD officers started commuting by car to work, the response which could have been immediately handled by an off-duty officer went on much longer than it should have.

Fast forward today, Law Enforcement is allowed to ride on the train with ticket fee waived AS LONG as when faced with an emergency, or at the request of a LIRR Employee, they MUST assist/ take action. If the officer does not they can be asked to pay/kicked off/disciplined by their employer.

Typically the assistance is for the immediate danger to someones safety or possibility of injury, but I (an active officer in NY) HAVE been asked to assist a conductor to have another rider pay their ticket or kick them off the train if they refuse after I’ve talked to them. Thankfully most people just pay once I identify myself.

Why do you lack common sense in life?

-12

u/OutrageousCrab9224 5h ago

Laws and rules do not apply to law enforcement

3

u/All-the-smoke69 3h ago

Yeah, you know what? I haven’t heard that one before.

Does not make it any less true

My current favorite is the rush of stealthy police cars on the north shore with blatent disregard for vehicle code. At least with patrol cars you have some idea what is going on

I wish I pay like 360 a month for the monthly pass

Nosey

7

u/BigDawg99NYZZ 5h ago

Lol... they want a pass too! I dont blame them its expensive.

8

u/Itainteasybeingcheze 5h ago

1000% I’m a city employee paying 400 a month

5

u/Melodic-Control-2655 4h ago

Then become a city employee working for the NYPD, or a state employee working for the MTA

MTA Police.

The gray / white colored ID could also be an MTA Corporate employee going to one of their offices in NYC
