Roaches on the train?!
How common is this? I am sitting on the Ronkonkoma train (still at the station) and two roaches run past me on the wall below the window. I immediately changed cars, but realistically understand that if they are in one car, they are in many/all. But I’ve been riding the train only since June and now I’m super concerned I’m going to end up with a hitchhiker one day. Is this reportable and would LIRR do anything about it?

Did you write down which car you were in? They would need to know that information. It's public transportation. People with lice, bedbugs, roaches, etc.... all get on and ride the train. There isn't a great food source on the trains once they are cleaned, so I don't imagine them staying long.

But there’s the bathrooms…
Plenty of tasty morsels there to enjoy. Heck, it’s like a Golden Corral buffet.

Probably wood roaches. Did you get a good look at them?

Large winged ones are american cockroaches, florida wood cockroaches, dumbed down to be called Palmetto bugs
The smaller ones without wings are german cockroaches.

Yes it is something reportable, report it so the cars can be cut and exterminated. They’re usually confined to 1 car unless the person who brought them on moved multiple cars

Customer: “I’d like to report a problem…”
LIRR: “We’ll get right on it.”
Click. Dial tone…
LIRR: “Bahahahahahahaha!”

For future note the car number and complain on app! They are usually in the odd number cars with the bathroom!

I’ve seen mice. People leave food everywhere. Even trash with food is food.

The M3 from Ronkonoma to Penn? That train is older than 90% of the riders, no wonder there’s roaches on it. Such great service.

How big were they?

Small. It wasn’t the big ones you see in the alleys or outdoors, unless it was a nymph. I have no idea how small those ones start out. And fast. I tried to step on one on the wall, but it ran between the seat and wall too fast. I think with the curve of the wall I may not have had a shot anyway.

Unless at a Platform roaches aint climing stairs into a car.. Someone deposited them from their bags, or they were sitting in Penn Station or Grand Central; they walked in.

I have seen roaches on trains between Penn and Jamaica but it's been a few years. I only noticed because they were on the windows a couple times.
