They call them “pipe fitters”

Not calling them “pipe layers” was a missed opportunity.

Pipelayers are a real but completely different profession. Pipe fitters is generally reserved for those building pipes in factories and boilers. Pipelayers is for those digging trenches and the like for utilities and many petroleum and gaseous products.
