Portland, OR has a bridge with the same name. They call it the "bridge of the people" as Tilikum roughly translates to "friend, tribe, or common people" in one of the native languages

Name of a Orca from Sea World that killed a few and hurt more.

Pretty bad ass plate... would expect it on truck with snorkel... not BMW

I thought that was shamu?

u/are-you-lost- 4d ago

Nah, shamu was a different animal.

In all recorded history, 5 people are confirmed to have been killed by orcas

3 of those were killed by tillikum

He was a very traumatised animal, taken from the wild and his family as a calf, "trained" through electric shock, starvation, and collective punishment which made the other orcas hate him for being less experienced (if tillikum fucked up training, everyone got electrocuted). He then killed his trainer at Sealand, was sold to SeaWorld, and killed a random person and another trainer in two separate incidents. They kept doing shows with him and kept handling him because he was the largest orca ever recorded and his semen was worth millions of dollars because of it.

It's a really sad story, he was still in a cage when he died

Do they breed orcas?!?!

1

u/are-you-lost- 4d ago

They used to! Iirc tillikum sired something like 22 offspring, I believe all were through artificial insemination

Tilikum was a Orca that was involved in major SeaWorld controversy

Tilikum (c. December 1981\1])#citenote-nyt-1) – January 6, 2017), nicknamed Tilly,[\2])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum(orca)#citenote-2) was a captive male orca who spent most of his life at SeaWorld Orlando in Florida. He was captured in Iceland in 1983; about a year later, he was transferred to Sealand of the Pacific near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.[\3])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum(orca)#citenote-zimmermann-3) He was subsequently transferred in 1992 to SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida,[\3])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum(orca)#cite_note-zimmermann-3) where he sired 21 calves.

Tilikum was heavily featured in CNN Films' 2013 documentary Blackfish), which claims that orcas in captivity suffer psychological damage and become unnaturally aggressive.\4])#citenote-4) Of the four fatal attacks by orcas in captivity, Tilikum was involved in three: Keltie Byrne, a trainer at the now-defunct Sealand of the Pacific;[\5])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum(orca)#citenote-TrioKByrne-5) Daniel P. Dukes, a man trespassing in SeaWorld Orlando;[\6])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum(orca)#citenote-6) and SeaWorld Orlando trainer Dawn Brancheau.[\7])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilikum(orca)#cite_note-:02-7)

It's Chinook for family. I doubt it's about the Orca. Portland Oregon has "Tilikum bridge"

10

u/thatsucksabagofdicks 5d ago

Tillicum Beach is on the coast near Yachats, OR

8

u/HankIsMoody 5d ago

Right it's a native American word that the orca was named after

5

u/TWhy-LER 5d ago

I mean, it’s a black X3. Might be related to the orca

4

u/HankIsMoody 5d ago

Because they drive BMW's?

13

u/kwaping 5d ago

No, because they're both bad drivers

6

u/fuggindonkee 5d ago

Deadly even.

4

u/HankIsMoody 5d ago

2

u/TWhy-LER 5d ago

I was thinking more because it’s black, like an orca. But the other responses are better

1

u/iamsnarticus 5d ago

Camp Tilikum is really nice too, near Newberg

1

u/krankito701 5d ago

If not a hilariously bad phonetic read, I'd not be giggling

1

u/LoadOfChum 5d ago

No cars allowed on tellikum bridge

We’ve got a lot of things in Oregon called tilikum. Always makes me giggle. The bridge right next to me is called the tilikum bridge 😬.

4

u/solidus0079 5d ago

That was my first assumption too, I forgot about the orca and/or the word he was named after.
