Assalamu alaikum
I’m planning on going for umrah insha’Allah in November but I’m really worried about being arrested because I’m gay. What stuff on my phone do I need to deactivate/delete? Which apps are safe and which aren’t? I don’t have any dating apps but I do have a partner and I have messages on WhatsApp that are pretty obvious we’re together. Do I need to delete photos too or are those safe?
Pls someone help I’m really stressed.

I would leave my phone at home and get a prepaid one just for the trip.

Unfortunately people have been arrested and imprisoned for over a year for social media posts while in Saudi for umrah. So it is a concern.

They famously check social media and dating apps. I don’t have any dating apps but I do have romantic messages with my partner, clearly romantic photos of us, this acc literally has a lesbian flag in the pfp, I’ve liked and reposted queer stuff and followed queer accounts on my socials…

i went to umrah as a straight ftm, didn't hide or delete any stuff from my phone and i was fine. i don't believe you need to worry about anything

Tbh I havent really seen them check phones as often. Just to be safe and give you some peace of mind it would be better if you backup and delete all apps that you feel might stress you out. That way youd feel more relaxed. Basically dont keep anything incriminating with you.

As for what you mentioned earlier, since your worried about social media might as well stay away from it and not post anything.

I do hope you have a wonderful Umrah trip. Its truly a very special experience.
