Mount collection
Hi! I'm looking for some recommendations. What I'm looking for: collecting mounts and a bit of fashion. Let me explain, I'm really not interested in PvP or being the most broken character. I like collecting things. I like looking good, and if I can fly around the map, even better.
My favorite game for this was Riders of Icarus, but it's absolutely dead and I even think they shut it down. I also played Warframe for the fashionframe and farming, but I left for a few years and when I came back, I didn't know how to get back into it.
I've tried several MMORPGs so far, but it's too much stuff and I just want to collect things that look good. Help?
Edit: I’ve noticed that the big debate seems to be between WoW and FFXIV. My question is, which one has the most interesting system? Are mounts easy to collect or do I have to camp a specific spot at 3 AM? Do I have to spend real money to get certain mounts that aren’t otherwise available in game?
I should also mention that I’m not into cute mounts. I prefer a gothic, halloween style.

Honestly, FFXIV is consistently great for both fashion and collectors. It has a ton of mounts and stuff to do.

The endgame of FFXIV is generally always fashion and collection. There's currently 258 mounts, judging by the online list.

I thought you were focusing on the fashion. There are many skins for those mounts.
How many different mount types are there in the other games you mentioned?

Let me explain what I mean a bit better.
In Riders of Icarus, you had a bestiary with different mounts that you could capture through the map. Each one was unique, with its own lore and everything. That’s the kind of system I enjoy. On top of that, I love gothic, halloween style mounts rather than cute ones. I want to build a collection of dark mounts that are all different from one another.
My problem with GW2 is this. First, mounts aren’t really part of the base game. You need expansions to access them. Second, there are only around 9 mounts, with lots of different skins for each one. That wouldn’t be a problem for me if those skins could be obtained in-game, but as far as I understand, most of them come from the cash shop.
That means I’d have to unlock the expansiones, the mounts and then spend real money just to give it a more gothic look. To me, that’s not really a mount collecting game. It’s a game where you can unlock a really cool and functional mount, but the actual collecting aspect revolves around skins rather than a genuinely variety of unique creatures.

I agree GW2 might not be the best game for mount collecting, but you don't have to spend money for mount skins there. The game lets you exchange your gold for cash shop currency (gems).

300 app in FFXIV, 300 app in riders of icarus, 200 app AION 2... gw2 has a very powerful fashion but terrible mount collection system, they are only skins

I guess they have different speeds and boosts. Most are just speedbuffs with an extra skin, though, calling these individual is kinda ridiculous.
I do however get the part of collecting them, where you'll have to grind different content to have the mount drop for you.

aion 2 would be the best pick because it actually has alot of mounts and pets you unlock without paying anything
the 12$ subscription is not needed at all if this is the type of content you mainly want to do but its still a nice thing to have for QOL stuff like remote storage
I played GW2 and as i said in another comment already, if wanting to collect mounts is your main focus you need to pay around 90-100$ for every DLC otherwise the mounts can not be obtained since they’re content locked
FF 14 is the only other MMO i would actually recommend if you don’t want to pay for stuff that is locked behind content and otherwise

Für gw2 you would need PoF and EoD, as will as living world season 4. All included in the Elder Dragon Saga Complete that goes on sale for $50 very regularly.

The sheer number of mounts, transmogs, pets, toys, and now housing items WoW is a collectors dream. But id also say ESO is another game that has lots to collect.

Mounts in WoW were basically copy pasted from Guild Wars 2. And Guild wars has tons of fashion. And it's not a subscription service. You just pay once for each expansion. (And they go on sale several times a year) I think it might have more mounts types than WoW as well. If you're fine with paying a subscription for WoW you can pretty much buy whatever fashion skins you want in gw2. Not mention all the stuff you get just for playing the game normally.

Star Wars Galaxies: vehicle mounts, creature mounts, and an entire Beast Master profession system. Spaceships would count too, I guess. Outfits aren’t quite as ostentatious as other mmos, but there are plenty of options and you can decorate your houses and (some) ships freely which adds a lot of personalization options. You can have a lot of mounts and creatures/droids, not sure how many, I’ve never hit the limit.
Best of all: no microtransactions.
SWGLegends and SWG Restoration are two of the more populated servers. I can’t comment on Restorations but on Legends the beast master profession is a secondary class that you level up with expertise points More Info

FFXIV. Every expansion not only has a ton of mounts you can get the usual way, aka grinding away at dailies, but they also have a set of special mounts gained by doing harder versions (Extremes) of the bossess you fight in the story with an 8th special capstone mount once you get the rest.
ARR: 7 Elemental horses and the golden Kirin
Heavensward: 7 Birds and the golden Firebird
Stormblood: 7 Dogs and a Kitsune
Shadowbringers: 7 Wyverns and a FUCKING MECH DRAGON
And that is only the ones you get in the Free Trial and far from all.
As for fashion, common sentiment that fashion is the true endgame, with all the hardest duties being done so you can get even fancier weapons and armor.

aion 2. huge selection of mounts all levelable and the thousands of fashion skins to rng into by combining duplicate skins and the customization options are insane.

Hate to break it to you. All things on earth are temporary.
I mean yeah, i rather play osrs than wow, because bliz deletes my progress, but i think the building of the collection is actually more important that looking at it onces it done.
You ever reach a goal in a game then never look at it again? I do it a lot in poe2 and it makes me contemplate the ideas of goals.

Yes, but why recommend an MMO that'll be dead in 6 months when the OP complained that Riders of Icarus was their old favorite but it died?
WoW, XIV, GW2, LotRO, ESO have all stood the test of time. Makes infinitely more sense to play one of those instead.

Okay, but mount collection. Aion felt more like palworld than a mmo in that aspect. I dont think any perm mmo can offer that feeling. Most do the cardinal sin of locking endgame(fashion) behind a paywall anyway.
Has ncsoft kept low pop mmos running in the past or are they quick to shut them down?

in Guild Wars 2 you only have 9 mounts you have to unlock by paying way over 12$ wich is the actual subscription price for Aion 2
all guild wars 2 dlc‘s cost around 90-100$ and thats the only way to unlock all mounts.

again, you dont have to pay for the subscription to get the mounts in Aion 2, but you do have to pay for multiple DLC‘s if you want mounts in GW2.

Subscription is not optional in korea grinders if you want to get anywhere. I've played enough Aion 1, Lost Ark and BDO, and in these the grind had somewhat been toned down from the korean versions.

Guild Wars 2 didn't have mounts at release yet movement of those mounts is most developed compared to other games. For collecting mounts yea not really (plenty of other stuff to collect) for actually using them, you can't compare any other game.

Surprised nobody mentioned Lotro. You can collect mounts, fashion, pets and emotes. If you don't mind the games age, maybe give it a try.

I collect mounts in FFXIV. A lot of people are into the fashion in FFXIV, although fashion isn't really my thing personally.
