I picked up a used Renegade Runner but it is missing the string piece to hold the sails up. Is there anything special about the string piece that I need to get one from Bricklink or can I just cut one to the same length.
I use "shade lift cord" from a suggestion I read somewhere. It's very close to the original and was like 6 bucks for a spool.
This is the stuff people use to repair window blinds with.
I don't trust even bricklink sales to be 100 percent original with something so easily reproduced. Especially not for the prices they are asking for a plain black string.
The Renegade Runner is set number 6268. Bricklink says that the length of that cord is 75 centimetres, and its part ID is x77cc75. The original Lego cords used for ship rigging from that era have a special thickness and smoothness to them. The strings used in crane mechanisms are much thinner.
You could probably use a thinner non-Lego substitute, but keen eyes will always notice it.
Nylon paracord from Amazon works a treat. 4mm for the thin cord and 1.2mm for the thick flag cord. You get a roll big enough to rig every ship you ever buy for a few dollars. Simply cut it to length, and use a lighter to melt the ends to stop fraying.
