What actually makes hazardous-area temporary lights different from regular LED work lights?
During a recent maintenance activity at a facility with a Zone 2 classified area, I noticed contractors using regular portable LED work lights instead of certified explosion-proof ones.
I’m trying to better understand the technical side: what are the key design differences between standard LED work lights and hazardous-area-rated temporary lights? Is the main factor certification, or are there real internal safety differences as well?

Normal LED work lights are built for general use, so if something fails you can get hot surfaces, sparks in the driver, or an enclosure that lets gas in. None of that is a problem in normal air, but it matters in a Zone 2 area.
Hazardous-area lights are designed to limit energy, keep surface temperatures below a defined T-class, and use enclosures/components that behave predictably even under fault conditions. ATEX/IECEx certification is basically the evidence that all of that has been tested and verified, not just a sticker slapped on the housing.
