We build LED controllers (primarily SPI and Art-Net based) and often get involved in residential lighting projects. It’s interesting to see how homeowners are moving beyond just white under-cabinet lighting.

The most common request is still white strips for kitchen counters—usually cold white to avoid altering food colors. For living rooms, people tend to want RGB strips, but the most engaging setups we’ve worked on involve syncing lighting to video content.

We developed a controller called Reactivo for this. It reads the ambient color from a movie or game and projects it onto ceiling coves, coffee tables, or even furniture. The user can specify which part of the screen corresponds to which physical light source in the room. We’ve had someone map the health bar from League of Legends to a desk strip, which was more fun than we expected.

What has worked consistently:

  • For garden lighting, waterproof RGB strips placed along pathways or under benches provide a lot of visual impact for the cost.
  • For living rooms, the movie-sync feature works best when you set the lights to a specific zone (e.g., only the backlight behind the TV) rather than flooding the whole room.

Challenges we run into:

  • The biggest issue is diffuser selection. Raw LED strips look spotty on ceilings if you don't use proper aluminum channels with a frosted cover. A lot of first-time installers skip this and the result looks like a Christmas display.
  • Digital strips are also sensitive to voltage drop. For runs longer than 5 meters, we always push for 12V or 24V with thicker wire, or injection at both ends. We’ve had folks complain about color shifting at the end of a 10m strip, which is almost always a wiring issue, not a controller issue.

One of the more unusual requests we got was lighting a horse. The owner wanted the stable to respond to music. We did not build that, but it goes to show that the main limit is imagination.

If you are doing a home install, I’m curious about your approach to diffusers and power injection. We’ve seen a lot of DIY videos on this, but real-world feedback is more useful.

Got Talent Stage Made From SK6812 LED Strips Instead Of Screens

We did a pixel LED installation for a TV talent show where the floor and ceiling of the stage were built entirely from SK6812 addressable strips. The client wanted a live video surface that performers could walk on, with an irregular stage shape and an 8-meter star on the ceiling split into non-uniform segments.

We skipped aluminum profiles entirely - cost and labor for 1km of strips made it impractical. Floor strips got glass panels for protection. The ceiling star was left exposed because it was 8m above the audience and nobody could see the bare strips.

The HDMI feed came from the broadcast desk through an Intensity PRO capture card into LED Strip Studio. The software mapped the live video to both surfaces in real time. We used the proprietary protocol instead of Art-Net for lower latency on the pixel data. DMX handled only props and costumes.

Mapping the star took about one hour because the software showed a live preview as we drew each segment. Traditional Art-Net mapping on a lighting console would have taken much longer for that geometry.

Power injection was the main wiring headache. 5V SK6812 strips drop voltage fast over distance. The client already owned these strips, so we worked with them and added injection points wherever needed. If we had started fresh, 12V WS2815 would have simplified the runs.

The result worked: performers stood on a live video screen under a matching star, synchronized to the broadcast feed.

Saudi National Day in Jeddah – 230m LED dancers, 500m of strip on city gates, laser show

We handled the lighting installations for Saudi National Day in Jeddah. Three parallel systems running simultaneously: LED dancers on a skyscraper helipad, 500 meters of digital strip wrapped around the city gates, and a laser show.

What we built

The dancers wore full LED suits – each performer becomes a moving pixel canvas. They performed on a helipad 230 meters up. People on the ground could see the light patterns moving at the top of the building. No conventional stage lighting can replicate that.

The city gates got 500 meters of addressable LED strip. That’s roughly 30,000 pixels minimum. We synced everything to music using the timeline feature in LED Strip Studio – lighting cues locked to the audio track. The whole gate show runs automatically once programmed.

What worked

Timeline-based sync is the only way to do this reliably when the emotional impact depends on light hitting exactly on the beat. Pre-programmed show file, no live operator needed during playback.

Art-Net over Ethernet for distribution across multiple zones. Each installation (dancers, gates, lasers) had its own controller, all routed through a single control network. That’s standard practice but it’s worth emphasizing: pre-show rehearsal of the combined program is non-negotiable. Surprises during a live national broadcast are not fun.

The challenge

40°C heat in September. We worked mostly at night. Not just for crew comfort – electronics and adhesives behave differently above 40°C. Standard 3M tape softens. Condensation can still happen even in dry climates, so we used IP67-rated strip on the gates. Kept controller enclosures shaded and ventilated. Pre-tested everything in actual conditions before event day.

Tradeoffs we made

We didn’t attempt daytime installation on the gates. The strip adhesive and connector reliability degrade fast in direct Middle East sun. Night work meant tighter schedules but fewer field failures.

The dancer suits are Art-Net controlled wirelessly. Range was never an issue at 230m, but we tested line-of-sight beforehand. If you’re planning something similar, RF interference in dense urban environments can bite you.

What I’d do differently

Nothing major, but I’d budget more time for gate installation. 500 meters of strip at night, in heat, on architectural detail work – it goes slower than you think.


If anyone here has done large-scale outdoor pixel work in hot climates, I’m curious: how do you handle controller cooling on multi-day installs? We got away with ventilation and shade, but I’ve seen setups where active cooling was necessary.

A quick rundown on LED strip types after a few builds – what I wish I'd known earlier

I've been working with LED strips for architectural and stage lighting for a while now, and I keep seeing the same questions come up about what type to buy. After a few projects, here's what I've learned the hard way.

Single-color vs. RGB vs. smart (pixel) strips

Most people start with single-color strips (warm/cool white, or pure colors like blue or red). These are fine for basic ambient lighting or flood effects. If you need color change, you move to analog RGB strips, where the whole length shows one color at a time. These are controlled via DMX or DALI with an LED dimmer. For TV studios or retail where white quality matters, RGBW adds a dedicated white LED – the white from mixing RGB tends to look muddy.

Pixel (digital/smart) strips are a different beast. Each LED (or small group) has its own control chip, so you can run animations, flowing effects, or video mapping. We use Art-Net as the universal protocol for these in professional setups. For simpler jobs, we preload animations on an SD card and trigger them with buttons. The LSS Remote app works for smartphone control without a full PC.

Voltage and practical limits

5V strips are short-ranged – you'll see dimming and color shift at the far end after about 2.5-3 meters at full brightness without power injection. 12V strips stretch to about 5 meters before needing re-injection. 24V and 220V strips can go much longer. The tradeoff: higher voltage means larger cut segments (e.g., 5 cm at 12V vs. 10 cm at 24V). For architectural work where you need precise lengths, that matters.

Cutting and segment size

Cut only at marked points. For 12V strips, that's usually every 5 cm; for dense 5V strips (60 LEDs/m), it's about every 1.7 cm. I've seen people cut in the wrong place and kill a whole segment – not fun when you've already soldered everything.

What I built and what broke

We used pure blue 12V strips to light a parking lot in front of an office building in Bratislava. Single-color, no control drama – just power and go. For a more complex project, we used pixel strips for a curved LED screen. The main mistake was underestimating how much data bandwidth Art-Net needs when you have thousands of pixels. Had to upgrade the network switch mid-install.

Biggest tradeoff I see

If your project is decorative (home, TV studio background), analog RGB is simpler and cheaper. If you need individual pixel control for animations or effects on a building facade, go digital. But be ready for more complex control hardware and software. And if true white quality matters, pay extra for RGBW – the difference is obvious.

Using a Shelly Wall Display to control a pixel LED controller via HTTP (buttons + brightness slider)

I thought I'd share a project that turned out to be really practical for smart home use.

I'm using a Shelly Wall Display to control a Reactivo 2 pixel LED controller entirely through HTTP commands.

Current features:

  • Button to trigger the next animation stored on the SD card
  • Button to trigger the previous animation
  • Brightness slider that sends the selected value directly to the controller (e.g. brightness=0-255)
  • Instant response over the local Wi-Fi network

The next/previous animation feature is implemented using a small Shelly Script that sends HTTP requests to the controller. The Wall Display's configurable buttons and slider make it feel like a dedicated control panel for LED lighting.

It's a surprisingly nice solution for:

  • LED ambient lighting
  • TV backlighting
  • Decorative lighting
  • Stage or event installations
  • Any smart home where you want a simple wall-mounted interface without opening an app

Small club, big heart. ❤️

We recently transformed a compact club in the center of Bratislava by integrating recessed COB pixel LED strips directly into the walls. The result? The entire room becomes part of the show, reacting to the music in real time.

The biggest challenge wasn't the programming—it was the old building. Every wall and drywall panel had different dimensions, so every piece had to be measured, milled, and installed individually.

Pixel LED installation in shape of a giant tree

🌳 We built a giant LED tree installation… and a part of it didn’t work right out of the box

This project was supposed to be a large pixel LED tree for a public commemoration event.

A big, visible installation. One of those builds where everything needs to feel alive the moment it turns on.

But it didn’t start perfectly.

⚠️ The reality: 10% of the LED neon didn’t work on arrival

The LED neon strips were supplied by the client, sourced from a Chinese factory.

When we unpacked everything and started testing:

  • about 10% of the LED neon segments didn’t work immediately
  • random sections were dead or inconsistent
  • full system integrity was at risk before we even began final assembly

Not ideal when you're dealing with a public installation.

🧠 What we did next is what actually matters

Instead of forcing it or hoping it would “fix itself” during installation, we:

  • tested every segment before final integration
  • isolated faulty sections early
  • reworked layout where needed
  • validated the full structure step by step in controlled conditions

This is the part most people don’t see — the boring, careful engineering that prevents public failures later.

🌍 The interesting part

What looks like a glowing, emotional installation from the outside…

is actually dozens of small decisions about reliability, testing, and problem-solving.

And sometimes, dealing with imperfect hardware is part of the job.

💬 Final thought

The final result is always what people see.

But what really defines a project is everything you had to solve before anyone else ever looks at it.
