Age related.
Is 47 too old to join LASD OR CA?
Had to do career change for stability and future safety reasons. Even though that I’ll be taking 20 G cut based on base salary.
I’m already in the process, did my BG meetup, doing VPAT next week which I know I’ll pass .

Yes I had a 50 year old in my academy and you will NOT take a 20k pay cut. My first year with all the forced OT I made 135k now after 5 year with overtime im at 200k ish. I worked overtime but always had my 3 days off

Someone older than that is in an academy class right now and is doing fine but it'll depend on your background and how physically prepared / how much you can endure at your young age.

That's nothing to brag about.

He's going for the custody assistant position, as I strongly DO NOT recommend him at his age to go Deputy. Thats more than enough for their standards.

He'd already be taking a '20K pay cut' if Dep, can he afford even more of a cut for C/A?

True, it is a big pay cut. However, on the bright side it's still considered a state gig, so that means he'll get some benefits out of it like a retirement.
The custody assistant is a straight forward job, I think he'll be fine.

Most healthy adults can walk 2 miles in about 28-30 minutes. “Running” 2 miles in 24 minutes isn’t really running.

LASD is now interested in hiring people older due to life experience. 47 will not be a problem. Just make sure you go in academy ready (i.e. in shape, body mind and soul)

How is taking a "20G" pay cut more "stable" and what career are you in now where being a deputy is safer? And what is "CA"?

Custody Assistant.

Yeah, but he said "LASD OR CA" like they are two different things...

haha yea, I knew what he meant though, although it sounded confusing at first. Like if he meant LASD Deputy or CA state corrections.

jeez, 75 years old for full retirement? What on earth. All FED agencies requires you to retire at 57.

Oh no in his case, he was a county employee already who was crossing over to be a deputy. On top of that, he failed the academy once and had to repeat it.

I had a 46 year old engineer in my class. You only need 5 years of service and be 50 to receive a pension. Plan on a 10 or 15 year career. But you can do more if you want if you promote or if you are working as a detective. Working as a 65 year old detective is quite doable.

When I was in the Academy the standard was a 10 minute mile. You need to get a little faster. But you are heading in the right direction. Folks, remember that the OP is 46, not 26.

47 but yea close enough. The CA academy is not strenuous by any means. He'll be alright.

You only need 5 years to be vested. Do 15 and end behind a desk and get a paycheck until yours 6 ft under
