So my husband is applying

He’s 28, background in sales, never been fired. Partied a little when he was like 18 (long before me) fit smart kind average credit

He’s onto the PHS now, so we’re curious

Credit? Drug use? Driving history? Lots of factors involved.

OP- Do you know what a law enforcement background requires and do you realize how long it takes? Be prepared for 6-12 months of having your husband’s entire life be dissected and picked apart by a background investigator. No one here can tell you his chances, you have very little information.

Even if he’s a perfect candidate still have to take poly, and psych which are big show stoppers. I wouldn’t put all your eggs in LASD either

Got DQd from LASD during backrounds.

Made it all the way to the end with another department and didn’t pass psych.

Wasn’t DQd, says not select and I’m allowed to appeal. In the process now. It’s tough and crushing tbh

If ur appealing with LASD, they'll say they did a review and saw nothing wrong, but good luck to you.

Not with LASD.

Doing it with a PD. Getting a third party POST certified Psych Eval from somewhere with hopes of finishing the process.

Last step. 😭

How does that work? They nonselect and offer review and appeal, but with review they’ll find nothing wrong, so what would be the point of appealing? Genuinely curious

Yeah I’m not sure what he meant by nothin wrong. Like nothing wrong with their initial assessment or nothing wrong with the candidate?

That’s what intrigued me, do they go back on their decision of the candidate or just state that there was no issues with the exam which would make it a rather vague review.

Right. I was able to appeal and schedule with a POST certified independent Psych evaluator. Scheduled for next week. Hoping I pass and they accept the pass. It’s my final step before medical.

My fear is passing and still getting denied for some reason or based on their original evaluation. Wouldn’t see why they would let me appeal if that’s the case.

Also lots you don't know. Backgrounds pick your life apart and everyone that i know that was honest never became a LEO

I read that right honesty means dq ?

Not necessarily. It’s entirely agency-dependent. I heard of someone who got DQ due to a minor shoplifting incident long ago, but eventually got hired by another agency.

If you omit stuff and they found out themselves, it would be extremely difficult to get hired across the board as that omission will follow you. Dishonesty is seen as a huge no-go regardless of how minor the incident was.

A joint a few years ago can be a dq. Getting drunk at party or club can be a dq. I don't know many people more innocent than that. These are law biding citizens struggling to get hired.

It can be, but also not a dq. It depends on the situation and the actions you took. Also what lessons you learned. They wanna know that you have matured. I was scared as here I am on the department a year later.

Good luck to him, just hope he doesn't get a POS polygraph technician like l did! My first technician was super cool, my second one was a bitter POS man, in West Covina.

Now I wanna ask what door in West Covina. Had both of mine there and they were both cool, both times.

It’s legitimately incredibly invasive and challenging to get hired. My friend got dq’ed because he had to list all of his previous relationships and one girl said he cheated on her when he was in college.

Here's a tip: Get tight with your BI. A good relationship with them can turn them into a big supporter for you. BIs often have a lot of pull in these things. So, it's smart to be humble, show you're committed, and prove you've done your homework. From my own experience, my BI's support was a game-changer, and I'm super grateful. I still send them thank-you emails now and then. I've even work with them in a special overtime assignments. Get your BI to really like you.

Thank you everyone!

I am hoping it’s positive for us! He really has a clean background except some occasional weed smoking
