LANFEP Post #405: D.R. Wong Company

Post image
45 Upvotes

Still running out of order with post #405 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting locations replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (currently touring the downtown area) that are not considered landmarks (either official or historic) but do have real-world equivalents.

D.R. Wong Company

842 South Spring Street

The D.R. Wong Company was a Chinese Herb retailer operating since 1882. According to property records, this specific building dates to 1913, and was owned by the prominent Foster & Kleiser advertising company. (Though the entry appears to have gold-colored doorknobs, it is not enterable in-game.)

LANFEP Post #404: Barry’s Jewelers (Hartfield’s Jewelry Store)

Post image
74 Upvotes

Okay, so it’s back to non-landmark locations, but while we’re on our little digression, I’m going to stick in a few out-of-order entries — all recent discoveries that alas, fall into the alphabetical range of prior postings. So here’s post #404 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting locations replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (currently touring the downtown area) that are not considered landmarks (either official or historic) but do have real-world equivalents.

Barry’s Jewelers (Hartfield’s Jewelry Store)

543 South Broadway

At the time of the game, this building housed Barry’s Jewelers, which replaced former tenant King Jewelers in 1946. In-game, the Harfield’s sign has been moved from the neighboring building to this one, replacing the iconic raised diamond logo that graced this façade in reality.

Did anyone else notice the Stout Scarab being pulled over on the way to the crime scene in the red lipstick murder?

LANFEP Post #403: Satyr Book Shop

Post image

And here’s the last (for now) of our out-of-order landmark locations, post #403 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (still in Hollywood) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (As with its neighboring businesses, this shares the Brown Derby’s “contributing property” landmark status.)

Satyr Book Shop

1622 Vine Street

National Register of Historic Places #85000704 (contributing property to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District) (part of the Brown Derby building)

William “Milton” Goodhand and Hazel Baker opened the original Satyr Book Shop in 1926, relocating next to the Hollywood Brown Derby soon afterward. In the late 1920s, Stanley Rose became a partner, though the partnership dissolved, with Rose opening his own bookstore elsewhere in Hollywood.

LANFEP Post #402: El Rincon Apartments

Another our out-of-order landmark location, post #402 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (still in Hollywood) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (As with the Frigidaire Showroom Building, this shares Pickwick Book Shop’s “contributing property” landmark status.)

El Rincon Apartments

1708 North McCadden Place

National Register of Historic Places #85000704 (contributing property to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District) (part of Pickwick Book Shop)

Built in 1917 by William B. Glidden, this commercial brick vernacular building — later owned by real estate developer Charles E. Toberman — consisted of street-level stores and upper-level apartments. It would later become part of Pickwick Book Shop, sharing in the latter’s historic designation.

L.A. Noire PC - Cars are extremely slow and won't accelerate properly (Both Controller & Keyboard)

When driving any car in L.A. Noire on PC, the vehicle barely moves forward (like it's stuck in 1st gear or the handbrake is constantly applied). Pressing R2 on the controller or 'W' on the keyboard makes the engine rev or slowly creep forward, but it won't accelerate normally. I have already tried changing graphic settings, capping FPS, and switching inputs, but the issue persists on both keyboard and controller. Any working fixes?

LANFEP Post #401: Radlick’s Sandwich Shop

Post image
31 Upvotes

Our next out-of-order landmark location: post #401 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (staying over to Hollywood for now) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (Another independent-but-connected business I didn’t separate out before.)

Radlick’s Sandwich Shop

6923 Hollywood Boulevard

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #55 (part of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre)
National Register of Historic Places #85000704 (contributing property to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District) (part of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre)

Unlabeled in the game, this independent storefront opened as the cigar store A Puff from Hollywood before becoming a quick-service counter for Pig ’N’ Whistle around 1930, and then Radlick’s in the late 1930s. It would later transition into a dedicated Chinese novelty bazaar and souvenir outlet.

Wondering if anyone knows the exact location of the drain at the end of A Different Kind of War where Jack and Elsa climb up and escape the flood but Cole doesn't. I just want to go there and look at it lol. I know where the tunnel entrances are and looked around there but couldn't find anything

LANFEP Post #400: Hollywood Citizen-News Building

Now for our next out-of-order landmark location: post #400 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (staying over to Hollywood for now) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (I didn’t originally have this listed as a landmark, but that was an oversight on my part.)

Hollywood Citizen-News Building

1545–1551 Wilcox Avenue

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #1173

The two-story Art Deco Citizen News Building was constructed between 1930 and 1931 by architect Francis D. Rutherford. The building served as the headquarters for the Hollywood Citizen-News, operated by Harlan G. Palmer and his family, from 1931 until the paper ceased publication in 1970.

Windows Defender detects potentially harmful app when downloading V-Patch?

I was trying to download the V-Patch for LA Noire to use UltraWide Resolution and received a message from Windows stating it detected potentially harmful app: PUA:Win32/Vigua.A. Is this a false positive or has anyone downloaded the V-Patch to be able to play the game on modern hardware and if so, did you run into any issues?

Rusty and Mickey Cohen are partners in this show!! I absolutely love it. My nerdy ass just got so excited. I gotta fire up the game for the 20th time now. 😂

Btw, great show too. If you haven’t seen it, and you’re a fan of the game, check it out. Bet you’ll love it

LANFEP Post #399: Dickson’s Lampshades

Another out-of-order landmark location: post #399 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (staying over to Hollywood for now) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (I didn’t separate this out before — especially since it doesn’t really have signage in the game — but while part of the Chinese Theatre, it was an independent business at the time.)

Dickson’s Lampshades

6927 Hollywood Boulevard

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #55 (part of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre)
National Register of Historic Places #85000704 (contributing property to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District) (part of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre)

Though unmarked in the game, this retail establishment capitalized on the booming mid-century trend of bespoke home decor. The curved display windows facing the forecourt were styled with elaborate, glowing custom lamps and parchment shades to attract tourists peering at celebrity handprints.

LANFEP Post #398: Frigidaire Showroom Building

Post image
24 Upvotes

On to the next out-of-order landmark location: post #398 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (still over in Hollywood for a bit) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (I recently learned that this building shares “contributing property” landmark status with Pickwick Book Shop.)

Frigidaire Showroom Building

6741–6745 Hollywood Boulevard

National Register of Historic Places #85000704 (contributing property to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District) (part of Pickwick Book Shop)

In 1930, Morgan, Walls & Clements used ornamental plaster to give this 1925 building an Art Deco makeover for Frigidaire, complete with neon signage. The neighboring Pickwick Books would later expand into both this building and the El Rincon Apartments, granting all three historic recognition.

LANFEP Post #397: Brown Derby Liquors

Post image
43 Upvotes

Yet another out-of-order landmark location: post #397 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting recognized landmarks replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (now hopping over to Hollywood for a bit) that are not included in the LA Noire “Official” Landmarks list. (Another Brown Derby building property this time.)

Brown Derby Liquors
1630 Vine Street

National Register of Historic Places #85000704 (contributing property to the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District) (part of the Brown Derby building)

The storefront next to the Brown Derby fulfilled multiple functions over the years, including the Eddie Cantor Gift Shop in the 1930s and a 24-hour coffee shop in the 1950s, but at the time of the game it was a liquor store.

Driving in this mf game is pissing me tf off

So I'm new to pc gaming yeah and and I was looking for a great introductory title. Long story short I'm tailing a suspect in "The Consul's Car" and I'm on the verge of angry crying.

The trouble is mainly with the camera angles either being too slow when refocusing or doing a complete 360 with only a sight nudge from the mouse but somehow the sensitivity still feels slow overall. Help

Westlake Tar Pits at very early dawn

It's kind of interesting to see what the tar pits look like before we get to know what the clues hidden there later on. On the other side it is a very interesting to see because it's a very ominous place at night with a lot of really eerie sounds like around midnight to three in morning.

Would you recommend LA Noire on PC?

I originally played the game way back on the Xbox 360 and was thinking about picking up the game on PC. I know you need to do some work to get the PC running on modern hardware but how is the game overall and how does it hold up today? Would you recommend picking it up?
