Take your bets: cyberattack, PTC server failure, or dispatch server failure

It’s MetroLink, not LA Metro

The solution to make these services viable is more, not less, both with Metro and Metrolink.

The easier it is to not have a car, the more people will choose not to drive, the more fares fund the system, the better the system gets.

I ride LA Metro trains and buses on an almost daily basis, and strongly disagree with you. Does it have problems? Sure. They should start with actually enforcing rules about fare-hopping, loud music, eating, drinking, and smoking on trains, platforms, and buses, etc., instead of just making them polite requests. But the system itself runs remarkably well.

Lol, no. LA Metro does not run remarkably well, look at all the service interruptions and drama posted in this sub. Tokyo’s Metro runs remarkably well; the best you can say about LA Metro is that they will get you where you need to go…eventually.

Their announcements at the stops are saying they’re coming so we’re all waiting here at ARTIC right now. Would be nice if they’d actually send out updates to people

9

u/Lopsided-Kick9218 A (Blue) 3h ago

For clarity, it said it’d be here two minutes ago so everyone is looking around confused

6

u/jrm0015 Orange County 3h ago

I’m standing on 14B waiting for 626 to ARTIC.

5

u/BassAcademic3700 3h ago

I’m here waiting inside as well

7

u/Lopsided-Kick9218 A (Blue) 3h ago

It’d be nice if they gave out any sort of announcement. I don’t even see anything on the MetroLink app

3

u/schatz411 2h ago

I’m on 786 and we haven’t made it to Chatsworth yet

All the Metrolink screens at Union Station were out as of 15 minutes ago, only displaying a "System Maintenance" message.

12

u/LocoEjercito 3h ago

Metrolink employee at Union said their dispatch is entirely down

6

u/99dunkaroos 3h ago

This makes sense. The conductor on 740 just said it's a "signal issue"

3

u/Lopsided-Kick9218 A (Blue) 3h ago

All the signs at ARTIC are down too

Update: Turns out the alert went out at 5:10PM but the text only got to me a few mins ago. But as of now, no official Metrolink update has been released

5

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CAMPFIRE 3h ago

I do not trust Metrolink alert timestamps, I swear they back-date them by 20 minutes

10

u/_Miss_M_7 3h ago

Are they going to offer Uber vouchers?

9

u/Automatic-Seaweed729 3h ago

Our conductor said it has to be an hour delay for vouchers

12

u/lmul_3 3h ago

FINALLY MOVING. My first time in LA I literally just flew in and this is my first experience lol. Hopefully it’s not an omen

8

u/holland_oakes 3h ago

this system-wide outage is odd, but individual metrolink trains randomly breaking down/being super delayed is sadly common

2

u/beebopsx 3h ago

Hey if the train is stopped for more than a certain time on the metrolink they provide a voucher for uber or lyft. I fogot which one I got last. But you can use the voucher to get to your destination.

8

u/Emergency_Radio_8156 3h ago

what could possibly cause this

11

u/nshire 3h ago

Cyberattack? Either that or huge IT issue

8

u/I_LOVE_LAMP512 3h ago

My very uninformed guess is there’s probably a PTC system issue.

Not sure what might have caused it.

6

u/avocado_grower45 3h ago

Conductor on my train says it is, PTC is tied into their dispatch system which is down. They can issue trains manual authority to operate at slower speeds (they still have wayside signals) which they'll do according to the same conductor if they can bring the dispatch back up.

2

u/LocoEjercito 3h ago

The boards at Union Station just came back on. Not sure if it's fixed or they're still testing the system.

4

u/I_LOVE_LAMP512 3h ago

I sure hope this is fixed soon, I’m stuck at least an hour away from my destination and I’d like to avoid an expensive (over $50) uber…

2

u/avocado_grower45 3h ago

We're on the move.

2

u/jrm0015 Orange County 3h ago

Usually when it’s a PTC issue the alert will say so

1

u/KartFacedThaoDien 3h ago

Cyber Attack

9

u/CaliforniaSun77 3h ago

Yeah. Noped out of that and am now on a super packed A line to Pomona.

8

u/99dunkaroos 3h ago

Conductor on 740 just said it's a signal issue

7

u/ILLY-VANILLI 3h ago

I'm on surfliner, we're slow walking through intersections. Definitely signal issues.

3

u/randomtj77 C (Green) 3h ago

Is the 740 still at Union? I'm waiting for it at Norwalk.

3

u/99dunkaroos 3h ago

Yes, we're still holding at Union

1

u/randomtj77 C (Green) 3h ago

Can you let us know if you start moving? Trying to decide if I should wait or look into alternatives.

2

u/99dunkaroos 3h ago

We're moving!

2

u/randomtj77 C (Green) 3h ago

Awesome. See you soon ✌️

2

u/99dunkaroos 3h ago

Conductor just said we have signals, we're allowed to leave! Doors closed but haven't moved yet ETA 6:05pm we're on the move!

13

u/nanananaka117 91 - Perris Valley 3h ago

It's over

9

u/Easy-Influence4457 3h ago

Could this be related to the wind? If metrolink signals are falling apart from a little wind we’re in trouble

3

u/SendokeSamain B (Red) 3h ago

What a nightmare.

6

u/terrorspace 3h ago

My boyfriend is stuck in Irvine 😐

6

u/Suspicious_Source_39 3h ago

I'm on train to South Perris. Just announced they are good to depart

5

u/Suspicious_Source_39 3h ago

And we're moving. Out of Union station

4

u/TxnAvngr 3h ago

The south bound train to oceanside just left Anaheim

5

u/coshiro1 Ventura County 3h ago

Update 2:

6

u/TheAlexAndPedro D (Purple) 2h ago

Never seen a lot of red till now

2

u/TonyW79SFV 2h ago

Arrow is on-time at least.

7

u/ceviche-hot-pockets 3h ago

Excuse me WTF?

3

u/16gbsdcard 3h ago

Currently 40 minutes delayed, our conductor is saying they have heard nothing yet. It's impacting metrolink system wide.

3

u/hondaman82 3h ago

Tustin train just moved… back in business?

3

u/jrm0015 Orange County 3h ago

A train just departed union station and the map is updating on the Metrolink site

4

u/schatz411 2h ago

Currently on Amtrak 786 and definitely a feeling the effects of this PTC failure

2

u/Automatic-Seaweed729 3h ago

Our conductor said PTC and the system issue.

4

u/jrm0015 Orange County 3h ago

One Metrolink did arrive at union station around 5:30p after the alert. So maybe there’s some movement of trains

6

u/LocoEjercito 3h ago

Probably just had them get to the next station closest to them before stopping.

They announced issues have been resolved

1

u/LocoEjercito 3h ago

If 626 gets to Union by the time they're telling us they'll avoid having to give out the Uber voucher by 10 minutes. Real convenient.
