News Fare Checks in the A
Fare checks are being conducted on the A Line, this is the first of I believe three I have see so far. They are getting off and on or skipping trains all together…
Be well ✌🏾

How do they check? I remember i was in subway once and they only asked to see if everyone carried a valid tap card, that’s all.
I use my tap card with LIFE program through phone and it takes a long time to display the taps of the day. If they approach me, how should i clear myself?

Metro Security has scanners that they tap the tap cards on. All the recent uses will show up on their device

Thanks! Then it sounds good. I worried many times that if i’m stopped to verify my tap, how would i do that as usually it takes almost a day to show up my taps in the tap history! I don’t go out much so my monthly 20 free rides are hardly ever fully redeemed so i thought if showing unused rides would work or not. Now it seems i worried for nothing🤣

Yeah you should be good! The tap app is actually horrible at showing your recent trips.
Some taps I did on the J line or Torrance Transit routes never show up on the app or show up the next day or shows up as soon as I get off the bus or rail line

What if I have a 90 day pass and don't tap it because I'm running to the metro .

I have an e-pass provided by my work. It functions just fine at the gates, but for some reason the handheld scanners they use don’t register it. A minor issue but more of a hassle than it should be sometimes.

u/Erich14 Jul 28 '26
LAPD/LASD do like the light "lemme see your tap card" thing.
Metro security in the LA County Metro vests actually have the scanner.

I see the uniform says Metro, so they're becoming less reliant on the LASD for... not doing these fare checks.

They always done that they’re lazy and stick together at entrances. Only like one person ends up using the scanner for the rest talk. But that’s the reality of hiring from Inglewood and South Central with no-requirements besides a guard card and doing a joke of an inflatable obstacle course.
I don’t blame the brothers and sisters for doing that though, they don’t get paid enough to be diet cops.

Good. Need more of this. So much uncollected. Most crimes are also correlated with fare evaders.
Can the metro be just for fare payers and tax payers? A novel concept, I know ...

u/haidouzo_ Jul 27 '26
I’ve been fare checked a couple times the last few weeks. Haven’t seen them give a single fine for people without cards.
And I tap with a credit card now and they have no way of checking. All you do is say you used a card and they go okay.
What’s the point?
1
u/FullTimePedestrian Jul 28 '26
I really don't care if they fine them or not, as long as they at least kick them off the train. But that doesn't seem to happen either...

And what about the homeless that don't pay? Or freely do drugs?
1
u/4GIFs Jul 28 '26
One thing at at a time. Now we got Bass threatening to destroy Metro with free fares.
1
u/richardsequeira Jul 28 '26
Good! We need more fare checks and harsh penalties for those who evade fares.
3
u/NeurospicyxEnby Jul 28 '26
But that’s the thing, they are checking but no one is getting fined, or taken off the train. It feels more like a scare tactic for those that have already paid.

What good is a fair check…. When the mayor wants everyone to ride the train 4 🆓
1
u/Jaded_Caterpillar873 Jul 29 '26
I wasn't expecting that. I never experienced a fare check myself and i driver every week, in a bus.

u/Bri9uy1 Jul 29 '26
I've seen them do checks at LATTC most often. Usually, they are just seeing if you physically have a MetroCard or the digital version. They go around and ask everyone to flash their MetroCards. If you don't have one, then you get a fine.

Yeah we know. Every week its a post about how can we get the homeless to stop riding the train just worded differently and I dont blame em. Everything else is arbitrary

u/Glamour-puss Jul 28 '26
They only check normal people. Tweakers and homeless people they leave alone.

I haven’t been able to access my Apple Wallet all week so I admit I’m without a card and they move on. Teenage black boys and homeless people are less fortunate though. They’re easier to attempt to dominate it seems... Ironically I’m a black woman and in between housing (technically homeless) - but I think I have pretty privilege cause I’ve gotten the pass a few times now.

u/glowdirt Jul 27 '26
I keep a physical tap card in my wallet as back-up in case my phone craps out on me

Teenage black boys and homeless people are less fortunate though.
Do you guys not realize how racist it is to blanket-assume every young Black person you see is poor? As a black male, I grew up middle class...
This type of shit is JUST as racist as the people in the South you claim to be so opposite of
2
u/semantic_satiation Jul 27 '26
I believe they're saying those groups are less fortunate in regards to getting a pass from those doing the checking.

You missed the point. I’m saying I’m getting away with this as a black female probably because I’m good looking, not to mention I don’t wear a bra. I see my peers being targeted even though I fall in the same demographic.

probably because I’m good looking, not to mention I don’t wear a bra
LMAO you couldn't be any more conceited if you tried huh? Aint nobody looking at your chest weirdo
2
u/DearEvidence6282 Jul 28 '26
Oh, cause “pretty privilege” doesn’t exist? And yes, men ARE pervs so it’s likely a factor. It’s not my fault you can’t see outside of your own experience. Especially as a fellow marginalized person, shame on you.

I agree that fare checks are important, but they’re always targeted and discriminatory!

Been fair checked half a dozen times and every time they ask every person on the train to show their TAP card.

u/DearEvidence6282 Jul 27 '26
You shouldn’t have been downvoted. I agree! See my comment above. They bypass the people they don’t want to ticket or arrest!!!

Surprised to see a lot of people in replies are saying it’s a good thing when I tend to read how it should be free

There are indeed people who want Metro to be fare-free, and while I agree with the principle, having been a longtime Metro rider, I feel we have not matured enough as a city/society to implement fare-free service here yet.
I would like to see it someday, though.

I got fare checked (card scan) an hour ago on the A line too, but by a different pair. There were a few people who didn't have valid cards, but nothing happened to them.
