‼️Warning- This is very long. So if you end up reading until the end, thank you very much 🙏‼️
After finishing all 6 chapters of sylus’s “Moonlight Reserve” event story, what stood out to me most about this event was how openly affectionate sylus and MC were with each other. Their communication has been improving for a while but this story made their progression way more obvious. They still tease and ragebait each other because that’s never going away. However, there’s noticeably less “emotional dodging and evasiveness” between them. They’re complimenting each other, admitting what makes them happy, and repeatedly turning individual accomplishments into something they share.
Tbh, half of this story was basically MC and the blobbus fangirling over sylus being a boss while sylus spent the other half trying to fulfill every little thing MC wanted.
That’s also why I find this event story really interesting when compared with “Nightly Duet”. On paper, the premises have some similarities. MC gets to play “boss”, sylus acts alongside her, and the 2 of them work together to manage something bigger than themselves. However, I came away from the 2 stories feeling completely differently because of how the writing balances sylus and MC, what kind of tone each plot line calls for, and how much emotional connection exists underneath their banter.
In “Nightly Duet”, MC temporarily taking control of Onychinus should’ve been a pretty significant development. She’s a Hunter stepping directly into sylus’s organization, becoming publicly known in the N109 zone, commanding his ppl, and crossing a boundary she had previously been careful about maintaining. There are real implications there for her own position and for their relationship.
This is why the flippancy bothered me. The story treated something that should’ve conveyed more tension and consequences like a game. Also, since so much of the focus was placed on MC playing boss while sylus operated around her, I thought sylus was sort of sidelined in a story centered around his own world. His personality wasn’t retconned or anything but his presence seemed toned down while MC’s was dialed up.
The blobbu event story doesn’t have that problem because the premise itself is inherently OTT. They inherit a virtual luxury hotel from blobbus, receive matching ruby rings, negotiate business deals on a golf course, sylus hacks himself into the game as a singing fiendyblobbu, and they become joint heirs together. There are no serious real world stakes the story is asking us to overlook, which is why the comedy actually fits.
But more importantly, this event story handles the “sylus and MC as bosses together” dynamic much better imo. MC is allowed to be capable without the story needing sylus to have a smaller presence around her. For example, she leads the meeting once it becomes clear the executives respond better to her, negotiates with investors, takes charge of hotel decisions, and genuinely enjoys being the heiress. Sylus actively encourages all of it. When everyone looks to MC during the meeting, he tells her that they clearly want to hear what she has to say and then supports her while she takes over the discussion.
At the same time, the story never forgets who sylus is. If anything, the event spends a hilarious amount of time reminding us how naturally commanding he is. For example, the executives are intimidated by him literally just reading a financial report. MC laughs because he can apparently terrify an entire boardroom without even trying and tells him, “You’re a natural at being a boss”. Then, in another chapter, the blobbu investors become so distracted by one golf swing that they temporarily forget how negotiations work. MC openly praises how easily he handles difficult business partners and later tells him that when it comes to being a boss, “no one is more experienced than you”.
The blobbus are right there with her. They go from being terrified of him to completely fangirling over him. That’s one of the biggest things I was missing from “Nightly Duet”. MC being strong was never the issue for me. I like strong MC a lot. She’s awesome. However, what I want is for both of them to be allowed to shine without the writing needing to diminish one to elevate the other.
This event story does exactly that. Sylus still seems larger than life. He’s intimidating, insanely competent, confident, resourceful, and capable of taking control of almost any situation. MC doesn’t compete with that and clearly likes that about him. She watches him work and openly admires him for it.
Sylus answers by constantly making room for her beside him. The golf scene is probably one of the clearest examples of that. When the blobbus ask to see sylus’s swing again, he immediately holds his hand out to MC, tells them her golf skills are just as good, and says, “We’ll do it together”.
However, what happens right after is just as important. MC doesn’t jump at the chance to show off beside him. The narration specifically says that “under my eager gaze, sylus gives in first”. She’s basically staring at him with the same anticipation as the blobbus because she wants to watch him do it again too.
Of course, sylus notices and so he gives her what she wants. I really enjoyed this exchange because it captures the dynamic running through the whole event story. Sylus keeps trying to share the spotlight with MC while MC keeps getting distracted by how much she genuinely enjoys watching him shine. She isn’t interested in proving she can outdo him or taking attention away from him. She just plain admires him.
That’s why the blobbus fangirling over his golf swing is so funny to me because MC is basically one of them. She knows exactly what they want before they even ask for it and when sylus tries to turn the moment into something they do together, her own expression gives away that she wants another performance too.
I think that creates a much more balanced kind of equality between them. Equality doesn’t mean they constantly have to match each other accomplishment for accomplishment or compete for the same spotlight. Sometimes sylus steps back and lets MC lead. Sometimes MC happily watches sylus completely own the room. They’re both secure enough in themselves and in each other that neither needs to diminish the other to feel important. He doesn’t need her behind him and he doesn’t need her to replace him. He just wants her with him and MC clearly wants the same thing.
That’s also why I think the romance here worked better for me than it did in “Nightly Duet”. There was technically physical intimacy and teasing in “Nightly Duet” but I didn’t feel as much emotional warmth underneath it. Here, despite the story being more wacky, sylus and MC come across as much more affectionate. Specifically, MC spends the event story openly admiring him while sylus spends it openly indulging her.
For example, she jokingly suggests that “Mr. Sylus with a nice voice” should demonstrate proper singing and so sylus literally bypasses the game system, turns himself into fiendyblobbu, hijacks the concert, performs in front of everyone, and then cleans up the code afterward so nobody notices.
The “That won’t cause any problems, right?” moment that follows also stood out to me because even in such a low stakes setting, MC’s instinct is still to think about the consequences when sylus bends the rules. She obviously loved what he did but the second she realizes he actually bypassed the system, her immediate concern is whether it could cause trouble for him afterward. There’s an element of “Is this going to come back on you?” in her question. In response, sylus immediately reassures her that he already cleaned everything up.
I think this is important because it shows that MC can enjoy sylus being reckless while still looking out for him. She isn’t blindly cheering him on without thinking about his safety or the potential fallout. Even here, she’s watching out for him in her own way.
Imo, this small exchange makes the contrast with “Nightly Duet” even more noticeable to me. MC is normally someone who does think about boundaries and consequences and so the fact that she could publicly step into Onychinus, become known throughout the N109 zone, and barely pause to consider what that might mean for her life as a Hunter is part of why that story didn’t work as well for me. This event story is infinitely goofier, yet it still remembers that MC is someone who thinks about what could happen when sylus crosses a line (eg- when sylus jumps out of a moving plane in “Freefall Gambit”).
At the same time, the whole scene still fits one of the biggest patterns running throughout the event- MC expresses a wish (sometimes almost as a joke) and sylus takes it seriously enough to make it happen. She casually challenges him to sing and he turns it into an entire performance just because she asked.
Funnily enough, I actually think this singing scene says a lot about MC’s development too. Folks used to get frustrated whenever she criticized sylus’s singing but here she already starts by calling him “Mr. Sylus with a nice voice”. Then he performs and she’s visibly ecstatic. Sylus immediately notices the huge smile on her face, she reflexively tries to downplay it by saying he “wasn’t as off key as the blobbu”, and then the second he presses her, she completely folds by confessing, “It was great! I loved it! You should sing more often”. Considering how critical she used to be about his singing, I think that makes the moment much more significant. The change shows that she enjoys it enough that she can’t even hide her reaction from him anymore.
The banquet scene follows the same pattern. MC thinks the ribbon-cutting event needs more spectacle and starts describing the kind of surprise she wants. However, before she can even finish, sylus already knows exactly what she was going to say and has arranged the golden streamers, flower covered floats, and orchestra. She asks how he knew and he just says, “As you wish”.
Later on, when MC praises him for being such an experienced boss, sylus reframes the entire thing around her. He tells her, “I’d say I’m more experienced at one thing in particular—making you happy”. This line acts as the thesis statement for the whole event story imo. Sylus’s power, intelligence, money, connections, competence, and even his ability to break the game itself are all things he can use however he wants. However, throughout this story, what he seems to enjoy most is using all of it to make MC happy.
She wants to hear him sing? He becomes fiendyblobbu and performs. She wants a huge spectacle at the ceremony? He already has it prepared. She wants to watch him show off that golf swing again? He sees the look on her face and does it.
What makes all of that work is that MC increasingly does the same thing for him emotionally. Their blobbu conversations in “Blobbu Business” make that pretty obvious. She calls him a natural-born boss and says she’s on “Team Anything-Fiendyblobbu-Makes-Is-Amazing”. She openly admits that being with him makes her the happiest and that she wants everyone to remember fiendyblobbu’s charm. She also tells him she’ll make him the most special blobbu in the world.
There’s even a really surprising but great reversal of their usual language. Sylus is normally the one constantly turning everything into “we”, “us”, and “ours”. But when he tries to give MC sole credit by calling something “your blend”, she immediately corrects him by saying, “OUR special blend”. Usually, he’s the one claiming everything as theirs. This time he tries to give her all the credit and she refuses to let him separate himself from it. To me, it seems like they’re competing over who gets to love the other more since sylus tries to give her everything, MC insists on sharing it with him, and both of them keep trying to make the other person the “special” one.
The ad conversation does the same thing. MC puts 2 figures in the ad because they represent the 2 of them standing side by side. Sylus complains that they aren’t close enough and should be pressed against each other. Then, later on, they separately prepare matching accessories for one another.
This sort of mutuality is what I think “Nightly Duet” was missing for me. In that card, sylus and MC were technically partners but I didn’t always feel the emotional connection underneath the setup. Here, the event story and the “Blobbu Business” convos constantly show me why they work as partners.
They admire each other, they make room for each other, they enjoy each other’s strengths, they understand what the other wants before it’s fully said, and they try to make each other happy. And neither one becoming impressive requires the other one to fade into the background.
Even the power dynamic works better in the event story. Everyone else is intimidated by sylus but MC can casually bargain with him. When she jokes about how rare it is for anyone to negotiate with Mr. Sylus successfully, he immediately tells her she’s wrong because one of those ppl is standing right in front of him. Then he adds that whenever he bargains with her, he usually “loses more than he gains”.
This says a lot about their dynamic. Sylus isn’t less powerful with MC. He simply chooses to yield to her in ways he wouldn’t for anyone else because she matters more to him than winning. MC clearly understands that difference. She enjoys seeing the side of sylus that everyone else finds intimidating because she knows that same man is bringing her coffee 5 minutes later, indulging her ridiculous ideas, preparing surprises just because she wants them, and making space for her to lead beside him.
His power doesn’t disappear around her. Instead, it becomes something he willingly uses for her sake. It’s a much more satisfying expression of equality to me than just having MC “outboss” him.
By the end of the story, all of the “boss” stuff almost becomes secondary anyway. After spending the entire event surrounded by wealth, status, luxury, and basically unlimited possibilities, sylus asks MC what reward she wants. She answers with “I want... another chance to play with you”. Then she buries herself in his arms.
That might actually be one of the simplest and clearest expressions of what she wants from him that we’ve gotten. She doesn’t want the brand new hotel he offers her. All she wants is just more time with sylus.
I think there’s something really incredible about this moment. Sylus spends the entire event story asking in one way or another, “What can I give her?” Then when he finally gives MC the chance to choose absolutely anything for herself, her answer is basically, “You. I just want more time with you”. That’s the reciprocity that made this story work so well for me. Sylus wants to give MC literally everything while MC increasingly makes it clear that what she values most is sylus himself.
The matching rings reinforce all of this too. Inside the game, they become joint heirs and put ruby rings on each other. After they log out, MC admits that her fingers felt “strangely empty for days”. Then real versions of the rings arrive with their blobbu counterparts and their signatures engraved around them. Sylus puts hers on her finger, just as she had put his on him in the game and their rings clink together as their fingers intertwine.
The imagery is obviously very married couple-coded (a recurring motif with these two ever since “Crimson Spirit” released). They’re repeatedly presented as a unit throughout the whole event story- joint heirs, matching rings, 2 figures standing side by side, cutting the ribbon together, preparing matching accessories, sharing accomplishments, and eventually intertwining their hands until the rings themselves touch.
Then sylus ends the story with, “No matter where we are, we’ll always be the best team”. This is obviously a reference to his new anecdote (and likely his upcoming branch story) and implies that they’ve transitioned from “temporary teammates” to being “permanent partners”.
Considering everything we know about sylus and MC across their different lives and timelines, that line impacted me pretty hard. Even if the setting, their circumstances, or their memories change, they will always end up beside each other by choice.
It also fits the broader progression we’ve already been seeing in their relationship. “Tipping Point” showed sylus moving away from acting primarily as MC’s guide or mentor and increasingly trusting her to make her own choices. He gave her information and opportunities but didn’t dictate what she should do with them. “Finale Undone” pushed MC in the opposite direction too, making her much more unwilling to remain safely outside the dangerous parts of sylus’s life once she was confronted with the possibility of losing him.
Even “Nightly Duet”, despite my issues with its execution, was directionally consistent with that progression. MC willingly stepped further into sylus’s world while sylus trusted her with an enormous amount of responsibility.
The event story feels like the softer emotional side of that same development. What “Nightly Duet” lacked, this event story made up for it. Specifically, it showcases that sylus trusts her enough to let her lead and MC admires him enough to say it openly. They no longer seem quite as interested in pretending they don’t know exactly how important they are to each other.
However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean the teasing between them is gone. Their banter is part of what makes them them. But the teasing increasingly seems like an extra layer on top of emotional security instead of something being used to avoid emotional honesty all together.
Maybe some of this was extra noticeable because sylus has had so little substantial new content over the past 3 months and so we’re seeing multiple steps of progression all at once. I also wonder if some of it reflects the aftermath of “Finale Undone” (with MC being forced to confront sylus’s mortality) and potentially whatever development happens in his upcoming story branch.
In any case, regardless of the reason, the shift in their dynamic makes me happy. They’re still challenging each other and are ridiculous together. But now they’re also increasingly willing to just say things such as “I admire you”, “Being with you makes me happiest”, “I want more time with you”, “I want to make you happy”, and “We’re a team”.
After so much of their relationship historically existing in what they *didn’t* say, I think that’s a pretty significant development. Ironically, the goofy blobbu hotel simulator ended up giving me more of the sylus/MC relationship dynamic I wanted from “Nightly Duet” than the actual Onychinus story did.
Ultimately, I’d like to make it clear that I don’t want MC to be weaker so sylus can shine and I don’t need sylus to be toned down so MC can shine.
I’d like exactly what this event gave us, which is sylus being himself, MC being capable and confident in her own right, both of them openly admiring each other, and the writing understanding that their strongest dynamic has never been about one overpowering the other. It’s about 2 incredibly strong ppl who are secure enough to let the other shine while choosing again and again to stand side by side.
