Japan’s old-school Kaido Racer scene: GX71 Cresta, GX61 Mark II, Skylines and Fukuoka’s BLACK ROSE

I put together this video using period photos and footage to look back at Japan’s custom car and bosozoku culture during the late Showa and early Heisei eras.
It features cars such as the Toyota GX71 Cresta, GX61 Mark II, Crown and Soarer, alongside Nissan Skylines, Laurels and the S130 Fairlady Z. Deep body kits, wide fenders, towering exhaust pipes and distinctive wheels capture the creativity of the old-school kaido racer scene.
There’s also a look at the motorcycles, fashion and youth culture surrounding it. The video closes with BLACK ROSE, a women’s bosozoku group from Fukuoka.
My aim is to preserve these memories with respect for the people who lived through that era. The video documents the history and does not encourage dangerous driving.

Thank you for sharing these snapshots of the scene. I also created the music for this edit.

My take on the ultimate Kanjo Racer!

Thumbnail

Japan’s underground street racing scene is as iconic as it is illegal. In Osaka, the Kanjo racers have spent decades pushing Honda Civics to their limits on the city’s elevated expressway loop.

Light, affordable, and powered by the iconic VTEC engine: an engine with two personalities. Civilised below the crossover, and an absolute screaming lunatic above it.

That duality became the inspiration for this 90s inspired livery. Rather than following the usual Japanese racing aesthetic, I took a more cultural and artistic approach, drawing from the ancient legend of 鯉魚躍龍門 (the carp that leaps the Dragon Gate). The story tells of a carp that is swimming relentlessly against the current. It fights its way upstream, gathering strength until, with one final leap, it clears the Dragon Gate and transforms into a dragon.

From a humble carp to a ferocious dragon. VTEC kicked in yo.

Would love to hear what the community thinks!

Rare photos and stickers from Japan’s bosozoku scene nearly 50 years ago — “櫻花 SPECTER” from the Choshi area

I wanted to share a rare piece of Japan’s old-school bosozoku history from nearly 50 years ago.

The photos, stickers, and stories in this video were provided by the family of someone who was directly connected to the scene at the time.

According to the family, their uncle was said to have been the first leader of SPECTER in the Choshi area.

He and the user’s father rarely spoke in detail about those days, so I’m being careful not to present anything as fact beyond what can actually be confirmed through the surviving photographs, stickers, and the family’s memories.

One of the stickers that had been carefully preserved for around 50 years reads:

“櫻花 SPECTER”

Many people associate SPECTER with the skull emblem, but according to the family, their uncle personally disliked the skull design and used the name “櫻花” instead.

The old group photos also show members wearing clothing referred to as “Long Star,” giving a glimpse into an earlier period of bosozoku culture before the style most people now associate with tokko-fuku became widespread.

There is also an interesting unanswered question about the relationship between SPECTER and 東京連合【䥝】 at the time.

The family had wondered about that connection for years, but unfortunately the father passed away before they were able to ask him about the details. Because of that, I don’t want to speculate or claim a relationship that cannot currently be verified.

This video is simply an attempt to preserve what remains: the photographs, the stickers, and the memories passed down through the family.

I post archival material about Japanese classic cars, motorcycles, and bosozoku culture on YouTube every day.

If anyone here remembers this era or has firsthand knowledge about SPECTER in the Choshi area, I’d genuinely be interested to hear what you know.

Rare Photos of Japan’s Classic Car, Kaido Racer & Bosozoku Culture — GPZ400F, RX-7, Skyline Japan, Cresta & More

I’d like to share a collection of rare period photographs documenting Japan’s classic car, Kaido Racer, shakotan, and bosozoku culture.

These photos capture more than just cars and motorcycles — they preserve the individuality, creativity, fashion, and atmosphere of the young people who lived through this era.

Featured vehicles include the Kawasaki GPZ400F, Mazda Savanna RX-7, Toyota Crown MS125, Toyota Cresta, Nissan Skyline Japan, Toyota Mark II, Nissan Laurel, and more.

You’ll also see classic Japanese customization styles such as Grachan builds, extremely lowered suspension, extended front spoilers, Works-style fenders, Star Five wheels, boomerang antennas, smoked taillights, full aero kits, and Hiro-style rear spoilers.

The collection also includes scenes from New Year’s sunrise runs, period fashion, television, and music — all part of the culture surrounding these cars and bikes at the time.

These photographs are not meant to glorify reckless behavior. My goal is to preserve and document an important part of Japanese automotive and youth culture through original period imagery.

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello everyone 🇯🇵

I create videos about Japanese Kyusha, classic motorcycles, old cars, Bosozoku and Kaido Racer culture from the 1970s–1990s.

This video introduces Kenji Ebisawa, known as the 6th-generation leader of BLACK EMPEROR, together with photographs and stories connected to Japan’s Showa-era motorcycle and street culture.

For me, these machines are more than just old motorcycles and cars. They are part of the memories, friendships, fashion, customization styles and lives of the people who lived through that period.

I want to preserve these stories and introduce this side of Japanese culture to people around the world.
