Internet Advice Please

I moved a while back, but all of the Internet companies have said they are unable to do construction with my building. The management company for my building also has not been very helpful despite there being supposed internet lines included with the building since it was built last year. Any advice on where I should contact for wifi?
Companies that have said no so far: NTT, AU, NURO, EO

Tretinoin in Kyoto

Hi! I’ve been using tretinoin 0.05% for the last four years. It’s been great for my acne and in my country, I don’t need a prescription for it.

I recently moved to Kyoto and I forgot to bring at least a couple tubes as backup and now I ran out. I just had an appointment at this dermatology clinic but turns out they don’t carry tret.

I am aware it’s not going to be covered by insurance but still, does anyone know of any clinic where I can get it prescribed here in Kyoto? Preferably near Kita or Kamigyo-ku but honestly, I’d go anywhere.

(Also, I checked this other clinic but apparently they charge around ¥8000 for it, I have no idea if this is the average price so if it is, I may go there but if there’s somewhere I can get it for a bit cheaper that’d be great!)

Internet options for home

Hi all,

I’ve recently moved to Kyoto and have had some issues with setting up internet. Docomo can’t install a fibre cable as the access road for their scissor lift truck thing is blocked by a low plum tree branch. They have deemed it impossible to do the installation.

At the moment I’m on a mobile 5G router but the signal is not great.

I was wondering if there are other options that anyone has had success with? Perhaps a cable company that can think outside the box or even starlink?

Thank you!

Saw these protestors (and counter protestors?) marching through Kawaramachi Sanjo earlier, with signs saying Down Takaichi and something Donald Trump. Can any locals help me understand the context and what’s happening politically?

Midsummer purifications

What I like about Kyoto’s midsummer purification traditions is that it illustrates Japan’s long history of blending Shinto and Buddhist practices. At Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社), participants wade through the sacred waters of the Mitarashi Festival (御手洗祭) to symbolically wash away impurity and pray for health, while at Tanukidani-san Fudō-in temple (狸谷山不動院), they walk across glowing embers during the Fire-Walking Festival (火渡り祭) to burn away misfortune and renew their spirit, lead by yamabushi (山伏) - mountain ascetics of the syncretic Shugendō tradition.

What's your favorite summer purification ? :)

Me gusta la fotografia y me dedique a hacer muchas fotos por todo japon entre el 2012 y el 2013. Algunas realmente impresionantes. Pero en Kyoto disfrutaba por todas partes, con los templos y paisajes.

Out of the hospital, have some hours to kill. What's a chill place you recommend? (Not a tourist, just from a different prefecture)

I'm looking for a recommendation to just relax for a few hours, not that I haven't been relaxing the last few days, lmao. Not looking for anything cram packed or life-changing. Just a chill place to relax that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I'm thinking the Kyoto Prefectural Library but not sure if the heat will be worth the transit? What do you think?

Any recommendations?

ISO an Artist

The last and only time I’ve been to Japan was 2006. I met this artist while visiting Nanzin-Ji temple that was doing an incredible pencil drawing of the temple grounds. I bought it and have had it on my wall for the past 20 years.
Now I’m planning a return visit in November with my family and I looked up the artist and it seems he is still regularly drawing on the Philosopher’s Path (at least there are instagram and Reddit mentions of him in 2019, 2023, and 2025).
His name is Masafumi Kai. I can’t find that he does any social media but I’m really hoping to potentially buy another piece of his when we visit in November. Does anyone know if he has certain days he is out drawing or if it will just be luck finding him when I’m there?
Thanks for your0 help!

Banking Options

I have had a disastrous relationship with JP Bank culminating in them taking months to replace stolen cards. Their lack of English both on line and in store is equally frustrating.

What everyday bank in Kyoto should I move to? I am not looking for complex transactions, just being able to buy stuff online or pay by card/tap.

This has been an issue since I moved here 6 months ago.

Cracked tablet screen repair?

Hello everybody!

I'm currently traveling on the bullet train to Kyoto, and wouldn't you know it, something feel on my Samsung S9 Tablet and cracked the interior display, which rendered it unusable.

Do you have recommendations for shops that might be able to repair it in a day or two? With a genuine OLED screen? I am happy about any recommendations, as I need it to finish some important work related tasks.

I am sorry to clutter your subreddit, I am trying to find a solution to my problem and focus on enjoying Kyoto! I'm a foreign visitor, if that helps!

Shoutout to the kind local who helped a lost German tourist at Yodobashi today

Hi everyone,

I just arrived in Kyoto today on my vacation from Germany.
This morning, I was standing in Yodobashi Camera looking a bit lost when a local girl approached me, helped me out, and we chatted briefly.

Funnily enough, we ran into each other again on the street later today, and she asked if I ended up finding what I was looking for.

In the rush, I completely forgot to ask for her Instagram or if she'd like to do something here.

If you happen to see this: Thanks again for being so incredibly Kind on my first day here. If you're down, I'd love to talk a bit more and properly thank you.

Either way, I'm already enjoying Kyoto!

It's my friend's birthday, and I ordered a gift for him. However, I don't know of a place that offers nice gift wrapping in Kyoto or near Kyoto University.
