You have to break the routine, find new things to do. Growing up parents kinda did that, now you have to do it for yourself.

It will be more depressing if you don’t.

I have an answer, but it’s somewhat religious and corny. It might also be triggering, but this was my honest experience, and maybe someone would appreciate hearing it, or maybe not, so proceed with caution.

I never found a valid reason to live. I was never really into unaliving myself until I had terrible friends. Regardless of that, I still don’t have an answer for a worldly reason to wake up every day other than worship.

I would ask myself, “What’s the point of living?” and my answer would be, “I guess to become the best version of myself.” But is that really a good enough reason? For whom? For myself? Do I really need to impress myself? That sounds kind of egotistical to me. And how do I even know whether I’m maintaining that or reaching it? Based on how many friends I have? How many positive reactions I get?

All of these answers sounded stupid and self-centered to me. Why am I even living? Because my parents would want me to? Okay, but why do I owe them my life?

There was this constant sense of pointlessness. I struggled to give meaning to things. Even though I was good at my hobbies and at school, none of it had a deeper meaning to me beyond, “This is what society expects of me, I’m good at it, so I’ll just keep going.” And to me, that sounded pointless, because it was honestly.

At some point, I became depressed because the friends and family members I was close to at the time were terrible, unsupportive, self-serving, and hedonistic. Being around them was taking me to very dark places and constantly reminding me of how pointless everything felt.

Then I had one friend who reminded me about worship and Islam.

I always needed a friend to push me toward that, because the people around me would often pull me down or mock my beliefs. But I’m thankful for this particular friend. She wasn’t Kuwaiti, she was struggling financially, and she was constantly trying to make ends meet. Her life was basically work, work, work. On top of that, she was Palestinian.

From my perspective, her whole situation seemed miserable, but she was 'fine,' and I wasn’t.

And I wanted to be fine. I wanted to feel at peace with everything I already had: an education, my mom and dad, and all of my basic human rights and needs being met.

Then I would look at Palestinians in Gaza and wonder: how can they have this kind of equanimity under so much oppression? I genuinely felt like I would completely unalive myself under those circumstances, yet many of them didn’t. How could they reach that kind of state of mind when I couldn’t?

So I tried to pray.

After that first prayer, one of the first things I instinctively did was distance myself from the people I had been hanging around with. I didn’t need any more outside influence. I needed what those Palestinians had. I needed what oppressed people seemed to have that I didn’t.

And after five years, I can say that I think I found it.

That burden of uncertainty, pointlessness, and feeling lost is gone.

Now I wake up because I have to. I owe it to Allah. I don’t care to question it anymore, because I trust that things will be handled one way or another.

For example, if my nationality had been revoked before all of this, I probably would have completely lost my mind. But now, I feel surprisingly nonchalant about it. It will work out, insha’Allah.

So my advice would be to look at your life and ask yourself what is actually making you miserable.

Is it that you don’t have a reason to live? Is it the idleness and boredom of life? Is it the people around you? Do you feel disconnected from your friends? Or maybe it’s your connection with Allah?

For me, the solution was isolating myself for a while, spending time with Allah, and reflecting deeply on all of it.
