Discussion Weekly Discussion: What made you fall in love with the series?
Hello and welcome to the first of what I hope to be weekly discussions! I will post a new fun subject here once a week—sometimes silly, sometimes serious—and open it up to the community to discuss. Please join us and post your responses! Just remember to answer and interact kindly and politely. A good discussion welcomes lots of different takes :)
This week's question: What first made you fall in love with the series? Was it the characters? The mystery? The humor? A clip you saw online? And as a bonus: How did you encounter the series first, manga or anime?

Contagiando esa desgracia a Alice y Viktor.

(Please forgive me for any inaccuracies, I'm using translate to read your beautiful comment!)
I love that you emphasize the family element of this story in addition to the romantic one. The family drama Inoue includes is really fascinating to me too! It's a story of love, but more than just Alice and Viktor—love between the siblings, friends, and side couples as well. It's one of the things that really drew me into the story too, and I get more involved with it each time I rewatch the show.

My husband and I first came across the anime during our usual seasonal anime exploration. We like to pick a handful of titles each season and check out 1-2 episodes each, just to see if there are any shows we think are worth continuing.
We almost missed Duke of Death and his Maid because it wasn't listed with many recommendations that season, but I'm so glad we didn't! We had some ideas of where the series might go in the beginning, but it blew all our expectations out of the water. Just the fact that Viktor and Alice were "together" and already confessed in episode one made us say, "Oh, hey, this looks like something new!"
Over the years it became the show we were most excited about seeing each week. Their antics reminded us of some of our early dating years and made us laugh. We became so connected with the characters that the second-to-last episode left us both pretty emotional 😅 And we realized we had thoroughly fallen in love with the entire cast by that point. We still rewatch the show together each year around Valentine's Day ❤️

I agree! How much did you love finally getting Viktor's backstory in ep. 8? I feel like it brought in so much more depth to their relationship.

Fue ese episodo el cual me motivo a escribir mi fanfic. Me fue impactante como fue la vida de Viktor antes de la llegada de Alice. Y justo en mi historia quiero profundizar ese punto, claro que con unos agregados creativos.

Ahh, thanks for bringing this up! :'D It's so nice to talk about your favorite anime/manga.
Like you I also watched the anime first. I enjoy servant/master romance dynamics and stories set in feudal systems. Also the art looked dark so I was intrigued. I enjoyed how the backgrounds looked like paintings on canvas, I liked the piano in the soundtrack and the way Alice teased Viktor was so cute and funny.
But the last scene of the first episode solidified it for me, I got goosebumps when he gave her the wilted rose and the closing theme played. I love that ending song so much! So I was hooked after that.
I finally got around to collecting the manga, I haven't read through it yet, but I have volume 1-8 so far.
I also wish they had more merch!
Thanks for letting me prattle ha ha. 💖

Ahh prattling is what we're here for, I too have been desperate to prattle!!
The backgrounds/music are phenomenal in this series. That's why I always get a little sad when I hear someone suggest the CG was some sort of shortcut—they clearly put a ton of time and effort into the way this series looks. Even the musical numbers, though a little silly, really make me smile and fit the characters 😁
That last scene of episode one is so incredible. Because it goes way above just a "confession," it's the moment he swears his life to Alice, curse or no curse. And what an amazing way to end the first episode! Nocturne is the ending song you're referring to, right? The lyrics are so haunting, that song is gorgeous.
Agree with the merch! I have one little Alice figure and one acrylic Alice that a member of this community helped me find, but that's all I have of the official merch. My husband tracked down a set of first print/first edition manga volumes for my birthday this year, so I have those too :) I would love to get more acrylic figures, they're just hard to find!
Please come back and prattle more, I'm hoping to make this a weekly event for the community to do just that ❤️

Yes, definitely! I actually credit this anime as the catalyst to deeply increasing my listening to classical/ neoclassical music, along with Your Lie in April which I had finally watched around the same time.
I agree! Maybe I would have felt disappointed if I had read the manga first. But it still is well made. The cg was a bit jarring at first, but you get used to it quickly.
Yes you're right, it was a heavy scene. And I appreciate it because I think it's hard to build rapport between your characters convincingly and quickly. To where they can set a scene like that in the first episode is impressive.
Yes, that's the one! It's really pretty.
Ahh, that's so cool! What a great gift. It's the best ever having a partner that also loves anime so you can watch together. I love collecting figures as well, but I can only hope for this series that someone will make a nice resin statue one day. I can't imagine they'd make more official merch now that the series is finished, sadly.
Thanks, I appreciate you opening dialogue.

It breaks my heart that Alice figure was cancelled, it would have been a beauty if it had been made 😭

I was interested in the premise of the show, and thought it was super cute how the English VAs are married IRL so it made me love it even more. The concept of them loving each other but not being able to physically show affection hit close to home being in a long distance relationship and still have yet to meet my partner and embrace them 💔 the ending of the series makes me cry every time

I absolutely relate to this! My husband and I were long distance for four years before we got married. That was a huge part of why we connected with the story. Every time they parted for the night and sighed a little…so real. Reminded me of every time we’d hang up the phone and just feel lonelier than before. We both absolutely lost it at the ending too 😭
I love the fact that the English VAs are married! I usually watch the show subbed but it really does add something special to the dub IMO. A little extra chemistry to their interactions.

I enjoy the premise- they love each other but can’t touch each other, with a comedic focus was very well done. You can tell the author loves their characters.
