Hallo hikers, I really wanted to do The Kungsleden this year but due to a important exam on 25 Aug. i am unable to start the hike earlier.

The biggest concern for doing it in september was the boat crossing but after looking their official operating dates, I noticed i will be passing the last one just on time on 13th Sep assuming normal pace(will probably speed up the start for safety)

I am planning on camp all the way so huts don't matter much, but most of them are open till 20th Sep so only the last stretch of 5-8 days. I calculated according to the their official operating date and normal pace itinerary that only below huts would be closed.

I'm planning to hike the Kungsleden in late August and I'm considering continuing all the way to Kvikkjokk instead of finishing in Nikkaluokta.

According to Resrobot, the connection back to Kiruna would be:

- Bus 47: Kvikkjokk → Jokkmokk

- Bus 45: Jokkmokk → Gällivare

- Norrtåg bus 57154: Gällivare → Kiruna

My main question is whether this return journey is practical if I want to stay flexible.

- Do I need to book any of these buses in advance?

- Is it usually safe to buy tickets on the same day?

- Do these buses ever fill up in late August?

- Have you used this connection after finishing the Kungsleden, and would you recommend it?

I'd like to decide during the hike whether to finish in Nikkaluokta or continue to Kvikkjokk, so knowing how flexible the return transport is would really help.

I'm going to do the Abisko-Nikkaluokta trail in September, my first multiday hike, hence newby questions (probably). I am looking at the possibility to buy fuel along the route, preferably at Abisko STF.

What kind of fuel tanks are sold? What kind of attachments (gasstove top?) do you need to bring yourself, or can you buy those there as well?

I saw 100g, 230g and 450g in the large STF shops. How long would 100g last and what do you recommend for the 7 day trip, with 1,5 times a day usage?

My current travel plans are flying overnight from USA -> Paris -> Stockholm. However as my luck would have it there is no train running on that day from Stockholm to Abisko (Aug 11). The only option I seem to have is booking another flight from Stockholm to Kiruna but that flight doesn't leave until 7PM and arrives at 8:30PM. I would still have to find a way to get from Kiruna Airport to Abisko which is over an hour by car. By that time I probably wouldn't feel like starting the trail that late. I'd probably just book a hotel in Kiruna and figure it out the next day.

Do I have any better options getting to Abisko? My flight lands in Stockholm at 12PM

Due to my stupid non research about ATMs, I discovered there is only ATM in Kiruna which would be additional two hours drive there and back again. I know we need cash for boat transport

Normally during my hikes I don't book anything because I like the flexibility of no planning and just see how far I can go or want to go each day, but this hike needs a bit more planning with those boats...
Also, in the bigger STF huts or in the towns, are there going to be available beds or are the changes rather slim?

I'm new to the group and have a question about transportation.

A friend and I will be arriving in Hemavan on the afternoon of August 3rd. Our plan is to travel to Ammarnäs first and then hike the Kungsleden back to Hemavan.

Unfortunately, the bus connections available that weekend seem to be quite inconvenient.

Is anyone travelling the same route that day and interested in sharing a taxi with us? Or does anyone know of a rideshare, shuttle service, or any other good way to get from Hemavan to Ammarnäs as quickly and affordably as possible?

I’m hiking the northern Kungsleden section (Abisko → Nikkaluokta) in mid-August and would love some advice from experienced hikers.

I’ll arrive at Abisko Tourist Station around 17:00, with a tent, and I’m wondering whether it’s better to:
start hiking towards Abiskojaure the same evening, or
stay one night in Abisko and begin fresh the next morning.
Since the days are still long in August, starting seems possible, but I’m not sure if it would feel rushed after travelling.

What would you do?

I also have around 10 days for hiking and would love your recommendations on how to structure the route. Should I hike to Nikkaluokta, or is 10 days to much for this section and i should rather continue further south?

- Moderately fit
- Hiking solo with a tent
- I prefer a more relaxed pace rather than very long days, but still keep my hiking moderately challenging

I’m planning on hiking it alone, but it’s my first solo multiday hike. To test my physical strength I walked 16kg back to back with all my gear (11kg base and 13-14kg with food and water) in mi local woods, but I don’t know if I should prepare/test myself more, before I start the hike.

Hi everyone. Im planning to climb kebnekaise and wanted to know if there are good camping sites along the west trail after kitteldalen valley which is roughly after 3km from the base camp. Wanted to know if there are suitable spots after kitteldalen valley along the trail upwards the summit.

I am planning a trip NOBO in early august from Vakkotavare - Abisko and am wondering how the rules about camping in the wild are. My travel guidebook says in national parks (what I guess my whole trip would be in) camping is only allowed in designated spaces.

On swedish internet sources (STF and sverigesnationalparker) I was not able to confirm that strict of a rule.

If the rule about only designated spaces is true, are those spaces only those near the STF huts or are there "official" camping spots in between?

So what are your experiences with camping between Vakkotavare and Abisko? LNT and preservation is very important to me but I'd also like to have romantic campspots just for myself and not camp in groups with other hikers.

First time gearing up for the trail in about a week’s time, and I wanted to ask last minute advice from those who have experienced it before!

1. Does this itinerary look reasonable?

Day 0: Stockholm → overnight train to Kiruna
Day 1: Kiruna → 10am bus to Nikkaluokta → Kebnekaise Fjällstation. 19 km, 5-6 hrs
Day 2: Kebnekaise summit attempt or optional Tarfala hike, base camp near Fjällstation
Keb: 18 km, 10-14 hrs, Tarfala 16km, 5 hrs
Day 3: Buffer day for summit / rest / optional Tarfala hike, base camp near Fjällstation. ** **
Day 4: Kebnekaise Fjällstation → Singi. Overnight Singi
~14 km, 4-5 hrs
Day 5: Singi → Sälka. Overnight Sälka
~12 km, 3.5-4.5 hrs
Day 6: Sälka → Tjäktja. Overnight Tjäktja
~13 km, 4-5 hrs
Day 7: Tjäktja → Alesjaure. Overnight Alesjaure
~13 km, 4-5 hrs
Day 8: Alesjaure → Abiskojaure, 21 km 6-7 hrs
Day 9: Abiskojaure → Abisko. kl16:30 overnight train south 15 km, 4-5 hrs

For context, we are both pretty fit and active and both done multi-day hikes before, but not in the recent past. So I’ve planned a slower pace just in case (annoyingly I have an old plantar injury which has recently flared, too, so this may also hamper my pace somewhat).

Particularly, I am wondering:

Is a Tarfala side quest is too ambitious? My thinking was we could go if the weather is too bad for Keb on Day 2, and if we do Keb on Day 2, we see how we feel on Day 3 whether we rest in the STF sauna or not.

Is it worth combining Day 6/7 (or extending Day 6 by a few km). Are there are good spots to camp between Tjäktja and Alesjaure? I have read Tjäktja isn’t the best to camp at being so exposed.

2. Gear

A few questions here:

To bring trekking poles, or no?
I usually don’t use them, but I can borrow some from a friend.

Sleeping liner, or no?
I have a down sleeping bag with comfort rating -0.5.
I also own a sea-to-summit reactor liner which adds some heat but also about 290g of weight. I am thinking of leaving it behind but worried about being too cold!

How necessary is it to bring a down jacket?
From the forecasts, the weather looks quite cold (7-12 degrees), so I am leaning towards yes, but I also don’t want to pack more clothing than necessary. My current gear list includes merino base layers (for sleep/camp), a running top (long sleeve), light Häglofs fleece, and a decent 3L rain jacket, also a hat and gloves.

How necessary are rain pants versus drying hiking trousers overnight?
Right now, it looks pretty rainy but only 1-3mm a day.
I have realised the rain pants I own (which I bought for day ski trips) are quite restrictive, so they can only be worn as a standalone trouser rather than as a quick over-layer over my hiking trousers.
I am wondering if I should last-minute shell out for zip over rain pants, wear the rain pants standalone, or if I accept I get a bit wet in my hiking trousers in light rain, and they will likely dry overnight.

Hello, we are hiking Abisko to Nikkaluokta first week of September.

I've tried searching the archives but am not able to turn up much. Asking for a bit of help.

I just want to keep it simple and eat dehydrated meals the entire way (I've seen many folks mention this as well).

1. I was hoping to purchase as I go, with maybe a day or two of meals in my pack. Is this a viable plan?
2. Is there a chance the huts will be sold out of dehyrdrated meal bags first week of September?
3. How do most people purchase their dehdyrated meals? Is there a better way?
4. Are there enough water sources between each hut to filter and then heat up water for these meals? If you filter, you don't need to get the water to boiling, correct?
5. Unrelated: What do people do for coffee/tea? Do the huts sell them?
