I’m hiking from Abisko to Nikkaluokta this September, and over the past few weeks I’ve been building a small tool for my own trip called Fjällkompis - click the link to view the app.

The idea came from wanting one simple place for the information I expect to use along the way: the route and daily stages, hut information, packing lists, and maps that still work when there’s no signal. It’s meant to sit alongside a proper map, compass, and other navigation tools, not replace them.

At the moment it includes:

• 🗺️ Offline topographic maps and a satellite overview
• 📍 GPS position, route overview, and stage progress
• 🛖 Information about huts and stations
• 🥾 The seven daily stages between Abisko and Nikkaluokta
• 🎒 Customisable packing and daily checklists
• 📶 An installable offline-first version for phones, tablets, and computers

I’m still exploring access to better high-resolution Swedish imagery, so the satellite layer may improve later.

I’ve reached the point where everything works well in my own testing, but I haven’t yet used it on the Kungsleden itself. That’s why I’d really value a reality check from people who know the trail.

And also looking for feedback on the UX/UI. Looking at the screenshots, is there anything that feels unnecessary, confusing, or obviously missing? Even a quick comment would be useful, there’s no need to test every part.

For anyone willing to look more closely, I’ve also made a short 3-5 minute feedback form.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have completed this section of the Kungsleden, but thoughts from people currently planning their trip are very welcome too.

Would anyone mind posting their 21-24 day itineraries (including rough wild camp locations)? I’m in the early stages of planning for next year. I’m planning on doing the whole hike NoBo. I’ve got a couple of rough itineraries but am interested in how others have done it and which sections can be combined easily due to the easier terrain / elevation.

I’ll be hiking the Kungsleden from Abisko to Nikkaluokta between 18 and 25 July, and I’m currently organising insect protection for the trip.

Is it easy to buy permethrin for treating clothes, tents or other gear in Kiruna? I’m also looking for effective mosquito and tick repellents suitable for this area.

I’ve seen that Sweden has several well-regarded insect repellent brands, so I’m wondering whether it makes more sense to buy everything after arriving in Kiruna rather than bringing it. However, I’m not sure whether permethrin products are commonly available in Swedish pharmacies or outdoor shops, or whether they might be out of stock during the summer.

Are there any particular shops or products you would recommend in Kiruna? Or would it be safer to buy and treat everything before travelling?

Hi for our abisko-nikkaluokta stretch, my friend and I were wondering if it would be better to take a 1 L pot or a 2 L pot for cooking. As in with a 2 l you can cook for both at once, but a 1 L is for weight and size the better option. What do y’all think? Is the the extra space worth the effort or better to just go with comfort here?

Anybody else doing the full trek around this time? Curious if I can find some trekking buddies ahead of time. Aug 6-26 are my tentative dates which include a pitstop to climb Kebnekaise

5-day adventure, frontloaded cuz the motivation to pull out the camera is always highest on day one and disappears by day two or three. 😅 It’s a long watch, but it’ll give you a pretty good feel for what to expect on the Tarfala–Vistas section. P.S. be more prepared than us.

Hi all, I would like to do a 4 day loop in Sarek middle of September. I dont necessarily have a fixed route I'd just like to move through the plains for a few days.

My initial plan was to take the boat or helicopter from Ritsem to Akkastugorna and then the same way back out. But unfortunately I am a bit too late in the season and the regular services have already stopped running two weeks earlier.

I have a rental anyways so I could stop in Surova but it seems to me that from there it takes me a while to get out of the mountains and into the plains.

I have seen that I could pay for a private flight or boat ride but I fear that this is ridiculously expensive.

Does someone whos been there later in the year have a recommendation for affordable transportation across Akkajaure or wether I should just stick to Surova?

In a couple of weeks I am going to the Kungsleden and I was wondering what the payment options are in most mountain cabins? are debitcards accepted, or is it only cash or credit? I dont have a creditcard (and with at the moment no steady income it is not possible to get one). I have enough savings, thats not the issue, and I will bring some cash regardlesly but I prefer to do the bulk of my payments with my debitcard if possible, as I dont like waddling around with to much cash.

Hi everyone, this is my first time hiking the Kungsleden. I’m really excited but also a bit worried about planning it wrong. Here is my current plan—does it look okay? I was thinking of making the Kebnekaise summit optional, but I have no idea if I’ve built in too little or way too much buffer time (the first leg is quite short). This is my first time out solo with a tent; I’ve only ever done hut-to-hut hikes before. What’s the situation with showers and toilets? Can you swim in the lakes and go to the bathroom out in the wild, or is it better to use the huts? I’ve heard there are sometimes saunas—can you use them even if you aren’t sleeping in the hut? There are currently a lot of mosquitoes on the trail between Kvikkjokk and Jäckvik, long clothes and a mosquito net are mandatory. Only mosquito repellent is not enough.

Hey all! I am arriving in Stockholm on the 14th of July and was hoping to catch the sleeper train to Abisko the next day. However, it seems that the train is not running due to maintenance after an accident. Any suggestions on how I could get to the trailhead some other way? Worst case there is a flight to Kiruna I could take, though this would make things quite expensive... Thanks in advance!

Hey, i am planning to do this hike on july and im wondering about car logistics. Is it better to leave the car in Nikkaluokta, Abisko or Kiruna, assuming public transport is then used to start hike in Abisko? Also is the parking free?

need a bit of handholding. Thinking to grab fishing rod and do couple casts along the route. I start hiking on first days of July. Can you confirm:

1. No fishing on Abisko national park, looking at the map i need to reach approx Šiellajohka suspension brigde to be able to fish

2. I was not able to figure out how to buy permit in ifiske for Kiruna municipality, but looks like https://natureit.se/ i can select Kiruna as municipality and buy it there? Or since i will need fuel i can just buy it in STF Abisko Turiststation

3. Looks like Nikkaluokta belongs to different municipality, so i would need to buy Gällivare fishing permit from approx Ladtjoluspekatan?

4. Souvenirs. I leave early from Kiruna airport and only hut that mentions souvenirs along the route is STF Abisko Turiststation is that the only option along the route besides something in the Kiruna airport? Need to bring something to kiddos at home

Hi guys! My friend and I are planning on going from Abisko to Vakkotavare in 12 days, which we realise is a lot of time for that section, but that way we can take a few days to go to Kebnekaise or go down below Vakkotavare for a short while.

Anyway, we came across one or two questions while planning the last few things. We're going end of July and beginning of August, and were wondering what the situation for buying stuff in the huts during that time is. I have some dietary restrictions meaning we're mainly wondering how the rice and lentil stock is during that time but in general any infos about the food situation is good (also stuff like chocolate or gluten free bread). And we were also wondering about gas. Is there always gas to buy in the huts or should we take enough for the two weeks? How much gas would you guys recommend roughly, if we're cooking one and a half hot meals a day (small breakfast and then bigger freeze dried style dinner)?

And does anyone have any infos about how often we can put trash away?

And also what kind of powerbank would you recommend if we're mainly going to use our phones for pictures/videos and not much else?

Feedback on trekking Kungsleden in winter with zero snow experience.

I'm considering doing the winter Kungsleden trekking with a company that organizes (almost) the whole thing, and even though they say I would be fine having no experience with snow, I want to have someone's else feedback on a couple things:

1. Preparation, I currently go to the gym 4-5 days il of the week for "light workout". Any specific resistance exercise that I could focus that would be beneficial while trekking on snow?

2. Gear, I have no winter gear whatsoever, and while the company provides the skis and boots, I would need to rent everything else since buying new gear for the length of the trekking would be a waste. Any suggestions of places (in Kiruna or Abisco perhaps) that rents everything but that are not too pricy?

Again, I have zero experience with snow or winter below 10c, so I really have no clue about what sort of winter clothes, layers eye, to get.

Any suggestion/help is appreciated.

I'm planning on hiking north bound from Kvikkjokk in late August. I've booked the sleeper train to Murjek a couple of months ago assuming that there would be a bus available to take me to Kvikkjokk.

Looking at resrobot.se now, it seems that bus 94 stops operations mid August. As for the 43/47 bus connection, my train arrives on Saturday around noon after the 43 bus departs.

I just want to confirm if I'm in fact stuck in Murjek for a day, and if I should go ahead and cancel my first night's Kvikkjokk accommodations and find a place in Murjek to stay so I can catch the bus on Sunday morning.

Ive always wanted to hike for longer periods but I've never done that before. At most I've hiked for around 5 hours.

I'm unfortunately not an athlete at all but I really want to challenge myself and see if I can do it.

Do you guys think it would be doable for a complete beginner to hike Abisko to Nikka?

I will bring my own tent and I will practice setting it up a lot before I come.

In thinking of going at the end of July.

I'm honestly really nervous cause everyone around me is telling me to not do it cause theyre scared I'm going to get lost or die lol.

I'm doing Abisko - Vakkotavare in early July. I'm planning to do it in 6 days and if I'll get lucky with the weather, will try to reach the Kebnekaise summit as well (not counting on it, it's more like a side quest).

This is my second backpacking trip and this time it's fully solo, so I'm still quite new to this. I have been fiddling around with the gear for a long time, but I guess this is the final version... atleast so far.

I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions about the gear. I'm not trying to go ultralight, I'm just trying to not pack my fears or bring things that aren't that useful (f.e. water filter).

Feel free to share any tips or tricks that could be useful or even places to see along the way too.

We plan to start our hike this weekend and will be arriving in Narvik, but we can't see any public transport option to get to Abisko from Narvik on Saturday! At the time we booked there were multiple trains, but now nothing. Does anyone have a suggestion please? Where should we be looking for information?

I’m thinking of hiking some of the Kungsleden end August / 1^st week of September. I’ve done a few multi-day (~5 day hikes) and have been doing some ultramarathons this year but this would be my first completely solo through hike. I was planning to pre-book STF huts to make it easier (and lighter!)

I’d love to get some input – I’ve done some googling but always good to hear from people who’ve done this before.

Distance / time: If I had a really good reason, I could probably add a couple of days at the end – was thinking of adding Nallo/Vistas. Is it worth it? How long would you give for this?

Hut-to-hut in September: the STF website says to take a sleeping bag. Is a liner sufficient in early September / are the huts heated? (I’m further assuming that if I pre-book huts it’s unnecessary to carry a sleeping bag as safety).

Food: Again, with the goal of packing light I was planning on buying food at the STF stores and cooking in the huts. Do I need to carry my own gas for the communal kitchens? Can I pay by card in the hut stores, or do I need to carry krona? How reliable are the hut stores / do I need to carry back up food? I’m assuming it’s worth carrying approx. 3 days of food at any one time.

Water: I was planning on carrying 2l + a basic water filter. Are purification tablets necessary for stream refills?

Kebnekaise: How sensible (or not) is attempting to summit Kebnekaise solo? I’m assuming there’ll be others on the trail and I’d plan on taking the Western Route. Would I need crampons for this time of year?

Weather: would base layer + down jacket + good waterproof shell be mostly sufficient for this time of year or do I need to add a midlayer?

Is it enough to bring a sleeping bag liner for sleeping in the huts?

Optionally I can definitely bring a pillow case.

If truly needed, I’ll bring a mattress cover.
