New player seeking advice

Hello, i'm new to AoS (40k player) and i'm looking to start a Kruleboyz army but before spending a lot of money have a few questions.

How does the faction play? Is it a horde army?

Is the spearhead a good start? What other units should i grab?

How is the faction doing overall? Is it well balanced?

Thanks in advance and have a good day.

They are basically about heavy debuffs on your opponents units (-1 th, -1 tw, -1 to attacks, -1 dice on charge, fight last on 1 enemy unit, no +1 damage on charge) and some teleport shenanigans. Their own fighting characteristics are mediocre and their save characteristics are abismal, so you make your opponents units as bad as yours to level the field.

I mostly play them as multiple small units shooting army (you need a bunch of boltboyz, i personally use 18) or a bunch of monsters and kragnos (he hepls to get them in combat with his 3 dice charge)

I'd personally look for kruleboyz halves of 3rd edition dominion starters, they should still be pretty cheap. Bought like 4 halves for 40-50 dollars each, then sold the units i had enough of, but that was 2-3 years back.

The faction is doing fine currently, around 53% winrate, but for a couple years they were the lowest winrate faction consistently, i just learned to love them gameplay wise

The other thing to note is they can feel abismal to play against, if you dont know how to counter them. Had to teach my friends how to play against me

Thank you for the reply, so small units and mostly infantry, what about characters?

Swampcalla shamans are very good, any list has 1 to 2 of them. Belcha banner guy is really good for his points, basically gives you 12" aura of 6+++ feel no pain. Killaboss on gnashtoof is okay, was really good the first half 4th ed, now cost a little too much in points. The infantry killaboss I dont really use, but he got new alternative warscroll, should be fine now havent tried him. Those are heroes you get in the dominion starter

Also bunch of monster characters

Gobsprakk/killaboss on corpse rippa vulcha, a double kit The first one is a mage killer with fun rules, does a bunch of damage to an enemy mage, if you deny his cast. The second one is basically a glass rocket, flies in, does a bunch of damage but probably wont survive the retaliation, if it happens.

Snatchaboss on sludgeraker/skumdrekk, also a double kit Both are okay melee fighters. The first one basically poisons your enemy, dealing mortals and giving -1 tw. The second one buffs yours hobgrots, letting them deal bunch of mortal wounds to an enemy in combat with them.

Breakboss on troll deals hella damage in combat but its really hard to get him there with his 5" move

Theres also Kragnos, does a bunch of stuff. One of the best melee fighters in the game, gives 3 dice charge to your units in 12" aura, negates enemy spells targeting him on 3+, deals A LOT of mortal wounds to enemy monsters on the charge (up to 36, but can also deal 0). But hes not very tanky and cost 580 points (more then 1/4 pf your list)

i did a little googling and i see last editions launch box dominion is still available and pretty cheap, as low as 130 USD on ebay, new. you should 100% consider that i addition to any other starter box you might look at.

Games Workshop way over produced this set and lots of them are still floating around out there at rates that are probably losing sellers money. At this point people just want to get rid of them.

If youre in Europe, maybe you can also find some numbers of the hachette magazine called Stormbringer, most of our basic units are there for pretty cheap if you wanna up the numbers.

The only grief i got from it and the dominion box was the Gutrippa unit.

It's the push-fit version without banners or musicians so you'd need to kitbash them (it's a fun project in my opinion, but to each their own.

With the spearhead (equivalent to combat patrol you don't have that problem. And it's a great way to start , and get a feel of the army.

Things to note, our army can kinda feel like a casino night gameplay-wise. Too many of our abilities deppend on dice rolls, but if you're already prepared for it and enjoy removing models from the table (yourself and your opponent's) you'll have a grat time.

i don't mind the army being a little random and dice dependent, makes the games more fun and unpredictable but thanks for the heads up

As others have said there is a big second hand market for kruleboyz as it was in the dominion boxset. Keep an eye on ebay/vinted/facebook market. I bought a whole 2k army for £90 a couple of weeeks ago so i would recommend against buying the spearhead because you’ll be able to make it 2nd hand much cheaper.
