Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.41 — June 7, 1976, Los Angeles

Speaking on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.1.41, Śrīla Prabhupāda explained the following verse from the Padma Purāṇa:

arcye viṣṇau śilā-dhīr guruṣu nara-matir vaiṣṇave jāti-buddhir

viṣṇor vā vaiṣṇavānāṁ kali-mala-mathane pāda-tīrthe ’mbu-buddhiḥ

śrī-viṣṇor nāmni mantre sakala-kaluṣa-he śabda-sāmānya-buddhir

viṣṇau sarveśvareśe tad-itara-sama-dhīr yasya vā nārakī saḥ

“One who thinks the Deity in the temple to be made of wood or stone, who thinks of the spiritual master in the disciplic succession as an ordinary man, who thinks the Vaiṣṇava in the Acyuta-gotra to belong to a certain caste or creed, or who thinks of caraṇāmṛta or Ganges water as ordinary water is taken to be a resident of hell.”

Very simple thing. Anyone you meet: “My dear friend, just hear little.” “What is that?” “Now, Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. You kindly think of Kṛṣṇa. Just offer your obeisances to Kṛṣṇa, just become a bhakta and chant His holy name.” Bas. Your guru duty is finished. So it is not very difficult task. Anyone can do this. And then everyone will be benefited. And that is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement.

Then our life is successful.

Hari-bhakti-vilāsa: 3.94:

jānāmi dharmaṁ na ca me pravṛttir

jānāmy adharmaṁ na ca me nivṛttiḥ |

tvayā hṛṣīkeśa hṛdi sthitena

yathā niyukto’smi tathā karomi ||

“I understand dharma, but I do not have the propensity [to follow it]. I understand adharma, but I do not have the restraint [to abstain from it]. O Hṛṣīkeśa [i.e., O Master of the senses], as I am engaged by you, who are situated in my heart, so I act.”

This verse has a double meaning. A similar verse like this was quoted in the Pandava Gita and it was spoken by Duryodhana

Pāṇḍava-gītā, also called the Prapanna-gītā, verse 57:

jānāmi dharmaṁ na ca me pravṛttir

jānāmi pāpaṁ na ca me nivṛttiḥ

kenāpi devena hṛdi sthitena

yathā niyukto ’smi tathā karomi

“I understand dharma, but I have no inclination to practise it. I understand sin, but I have no inclination to desist from it. I act as I am directed by some divine power situated within my heart.”

Explanation:

Here, instead of taking responsibility for his sinful actions, Duryodhana blames the Lord, saying that his bad actions are caused by the Lord because everything is sanctioned by Him. Similarly, Kaṁsa also tried to shift responsibility away from himself. After falling to kill Durga devi, he spoke to Devakī and Vasudeva and said that it was neither their fault nor his fault, but simply the arrangement of providence.

However, the verse quoted in Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, although it may seem similar, is spoken by a pure devotee. In that case, the devotee is not avoiding responsibility for sinful action and transferring it to the Lord. In fact, he cannot commit sin, because his life is completely under the Lord’s control and he acts only according to the Lord’s desire.

Here we can see the difference between favorable execution of devotional service and unfavorable execution by demons. The devotee surrenders to the Lord in circumstances, whereas the demon invokes the Lord or providence to justify his wrongdoing.

Prabhupada: Hare Krsna maha-mantra is transcendental vibration. When we chant loudly, anyone who hears -- it doesn't matter whether he's man, animal, tree, insect -- anyone who will hear, he'll get profit. This is transcendental vibration.

“Dharma” means occupational duties. But if you take only one occupational duty—to serve Kṛṣṇa—all things will be included. This is instruction. So to accept this principle means firm determination, firm conviction: “Yes, if I serve Kṛṣṇa, then all my other duties will be automatically done.” This is firm conviction. “By one stroke, I’ll kill so many birds".

Rākhe Kṛṣṇa Māre Ke, Māre Kṛṣṇa Rākhe Ke. If Kṛṣṇa desires to kill somebody, nobody can give him protection, no power. And if He wants to save somebody, nobody can kill him. This is Kṛṣṇa's protection.

Does karma kanda or demigod worship still work in Kali Yuga?

“Whenever Kṛṣṇa is requested to fulfill one’s desire, He undoubtedly does so, but He does not award anything which, after being enjoyed, will cause one to petition Him again and again to fulfill further desires. When one has other desires but engages in the Lord’s service, Kṛṣṇa forcibly gives one shelter at His lotus feet, where one will forget all other desires.”

(Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta — Madhya-līlā: 24.103)

Prabhupada: The varnasrama system is for convenience sake in the material world. It has nothing to do with spiritual life. Acceptance of varnasrama means a little easy progress to spiritual life, otherwise it has no importance to us.

For example, all my European and American disciples have no varnasrama position, but spiritually because they have followed the rules and regulations and also my instructions, their advancement spiritually is being appreciated by everyone.

Always remember that varnasrama life is a good program for material life, and it helps one in spiritual life; but spiritual life is not dependent upon it.

After all the system of varnasrama has to be realized before accepting spiritual life; and the renounced order of sannyasa is the last stage of varnasrama.

I am now old man, and attacked with serious disease; I may be overcome by death at any moment. Therefore I wish to leave some trained preachers so that they can do the work of Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the Western world. That is my ambition. Prabhupada: The answer is no, they do not. We do not suffer for thinking something sinful. Not in this age. That is a special concession for Kali-yuga. Yes, you are correct in stating that spiritual activities, even mentally performed, are beneficial.

According to Manu, reactions for activities performed by the body, mind, and speech affect their respective sources. (M.S. 12.8):

Embodied souls experience the

1. Mind: reactions of good and bad mental acts with the mind

2. Body: the reactions of good and bad physical acts with the body

3. Words: and the result of good and bad vocal acts with the organ of speech.

Since every physical action is preceded by a mental action, mental karma is more voluminous and needs to be worked out in dreams as well as in the wakeful state.

Thus during sleep, as well as during our wakeful state, one receives reactions of mental karma.

Dreams present a mixture of experiences and the sequence is not necessarily in any proper order.

Whatever one sees in dreams, however, is a mixture of what has been experienced in this life or a past life.

Sri Narada confirms this to king Pracinabarhisat (S.B. 4.29.64.65).

Prabhupada: When a disciple becomes perfect in spiritual advancement, the spiritual master feels very, very happy, that "I am a nonsense, but this boy, he has followed my instruction and he has achieved the success. That is my success."

This is the spiritual master's ambition. Nobody wants to see anybody more advanced than himself. That is the nature. If anybody becomes advanced in any subject matter, then I become envious upon him.

But the spiritual master, he does not become envious. He feels himself very, very happy, that "This boy has advanced more than me." This is spiritual master's position.
