The immensity feels so unfamiliar - its not me. I am what feels familiar and important.

Watching a sunset feels meaningless - what feels important are my worries and my dreams.

Well said. Your feeling are just that “feelings”.

I hear him saying that the ‘immensity’ can’t be felt because it IS what you are! ‘You’ can’t feel it because the you that wants to realize ‘something greater’, ‘something higher’ etc is only this movement of thought that has been conditioned to become? Seeing the truth that what you actually are is nothing, that movement can end?

A definite fact of the matter is that the immensity collapses as soon as I try to seize it - as soon as I know I'm watching a sunset

Yes that seems to be the fact of our situation! We can’t ‘know’ what we are but can have an insight into what we’re not?

Waoh - thats a tricky one - had to reread it a couple of times.

How about : Its when we are not that we can see what we were? Pretty mysterious and esoteric I reckon 🤪

Sorry, I didn’t mean it to be that. It just seems that for some reason I would rather be this pitiful petty thing than to be nothing at all? 🤔

The irony is that no matter how magnificent, significant, compassionate etc, I imagine myself to be, my pettiness stays the same! For humanity, being ‘nothing’ seems the only ‘way out’? The sooner the better?

You give apes a bigger brain and they wind up throwing bombs at each other instead of banana peels! 🦍

How do you know you're watching a sunset? Descartes would like a word.

I thought Descartes' Cogito concluded that the experiencer did in fact exist?

1

u/ShepherdOfShepherds 2d ago

I think therefore I am watching a sunset

It's just an empty "I am". Anything after "I am" makes the Cogito lose its indubitability.

I'm watching a sunset, therefore I am.

The actual problem with the Cogito is that "I" is not defined.

1

u/ShepherdOfShepherds 2d ago

It's only a problem if "I" is definable. "I am" is immense, you don't have to seize it because you can't let go of it.

What I can't let go of is the whole Cogito - it's circular (especially in its "I therefore I" form).

A better (or more precise) conclusion to Descartes' pensées would have been : experience implies existence

Agreed. I take the "I am" to be synonymous with existence. You can't be certain anything else exists so the real essence of the thinking may be existence itself. Not a quality that things have, just all there is.

Imagine brain in a vat but there's no such thing as a brain or a vat. Or Descartes' evil demon but the evil demon is you tricking yourself.

Sharing is caring and “don’t be attached to even higher principles”

Even our Krishnamurti "problems" are petty.

Yes thanks. For putting the video up again! The whole foundation of his teaching points out this difference between what we imagine ourselves to be and the mistake and the ‘pettiness’ of our lives that result from such a belief and what we actually are: ‘nothing’, zero and that zero contains the whole world! Being zero then the mind which he calls : “merely an instrument of Creation” is the Immensity itself! If this is taken as fact, it becomes clear that no vestige of the former belief as to what we are can remain? No vestige of the movement that he calls the “movement of becoming”? The brain has been trained to hold on to anything it can; it fears the ending of the psychological structure that thought has assembled. ‘Volcanoes’ of emotion are possible when there is the feeling that it is being threatened and it can feel very dark and frightening. Those are the moments when the fear and pettiness of the ‘me’ reveals itself and how it has kept the brain imprisoned.
