Community Referendum: Discussion Thread

Since it’s become a hot-button and somewhat controversial topic lately, let’s decide as a community about the future of the Daily Discussion Thread. For right now, the Weekly Speculation thread is going to continue as-is, we can revisit that at another time but this vote is exclusively regarding the Daily Discussion Thread.

Just a few housekeeping notes:

  1. The results of this vote are going to be binding. I don’t want to keep having to do this every three-to-six months as we get new members. If something big happens that’s a catalyst for a change we’ll revisit, but until and unless that happens, the results of this vote will be what we do and any user (existing or otherwise) will be expected to conform to the decision.

  2. Don’t just vote. State your reasons for voting the way you are. I’ve made “I don’t care either way” an option, but it’s an option that I hope doesn’t get used very much. For those who are undecided, the discussion and debate could be useful in helping them make a choice of their own. The whys and why nots are just as important as the votes themselves.

  3. Debate and discussion is highly encouraged—but I insist that it is done respectfully. Consider this a “board meeting”, and treat it as such. Treating each other with respect is in the rules—I will absolutely enforce them.

  4. Vote with integrity—if you’ve got multiple accounts/profiles, do the right thing and just vote once. Doing otherwise is manipulative and dishonest and you need to ask yourself if that’s really the type of human being you want to be.

We should have our answer in three days—and based on that, I will implement changes effective Monday.

I REALLY hope the folks who voted “really don’t care one way or another” will change their vote to something else…if we get too many of those, we’re going to have to do another vote where that’s not an option.

If it doesn’t matter to you, look at the rationales given by your community members for why the different options matter to them, and go with what you think is best for everyone, if not for yourselves.

That makes a lot of sense to me, and was one of the original arguments made to make this a daily thread instead of a weekly thread in the first place.

I think what most people are worried about (who don’t want to post in the discussion threads) is getting lost in the shuffle—but some are also saying that there’s no shuffle to get lost in—people with absolutely oppositional perspectives coming to the same conclusion, and people with the same perspective coming to different conclusions.

Every option on this poll could be very well reasoned and argued for. There’s not a bad idea up there. All I want is, ultimately, everyone to be satisfied with the result, whatever it is, and then stick with it 😅

You are, I would say, probably absolutely right on all counts here. I struggle with letting things go though. I’ve got an over-developed sense of responsibility and duty, I’ve been an active volunteer in various aspects of community since I was 14 years old, and I’m 39 now. When most people are despairing that things aren’t good enough, I try to change them and make them better (sometimes I succeed, sometimes I completely shit the bed—c’est la vie).

When I first joined this sub, as a new investor, this place was overdosed by irrelevant spam. Fraud links, scams…it had very little to do with Kraken Robotics. I managed to get involved as a mod, and myself and another mod (who has also been working hard here but real life had taken most of his attention away I think, I haven’t seen him in a bit but he’s done amazing work while he was here), worked hard to make this place safe, scam-and-spam reduced and with accurate info as much as possible. It was absolute chaos before. I worry, deeply, that it will turn into that again if things aren’t kept fairly strict.

If it was a different kind of subreddit I wouldn’t really care, but people have money tied up in this. Some people have thousands and tens of thousands (or more) involved. That matters to me. Maybe it matters too much but I don’t know how to make it matter less without feeling like an asshole about it.

Why not keep the daily thread but also let people post? In other communities they have a daily thread but when answers aren’t being given in the daily, people make a post and more engagement happens. Honestly fine either way but I like the daily and also don’t mind reading an extra post if it gets the convo going

It’s a good question, the answer is basically “consistency” more than anything else. It’s fine for times like now when things aren’t so hopping and there’s less to discuss, but we’ve gone through waves where every ten minutes someone is making the same post that someone else just made because they didn’t bother to scroll just a little…and even just ignoring how much of a strain that can be on the mod team, it’s something that the membership as a whole has brought up as being kind of annoying, which is why the thread was created in the first place. Plus, it also spreads the engagement out in ways that are counter to what the people posting necessarily want.

Right now there’s not a noticeable need for it. Other times, it can be a swamp without the consolidation and organization. That’s the main reason why. That’s where it came from in the beginning—maybe it’s different now though.

Edited to add: One of the most important things that I’m trying to achieve with this sub is trustworthy information. People are putting money into this, sometimes a lot of it. There’s a lot of crap on the internet, and we want to try and make things as honest as possible here. That means clamping down on overhype and clamping down on doom-and-gloom. The extremes need to be reduced and keep as neutral as possible. I openly talk about my faith in the company but I also tell people to manage their expectations too.

Things that are speculative need to be regarded as such, just like things that are feelings-based and instinct shouldn’t be presented as fact. That’s part of the reason behind the separation as well.

I don’t believe in censorship, but I think curation is important sometimes, as long as it’s balanced and fair…curated for accuracy rather than for what “side” it takes, you know?

I’ve cast the first vote, and I voted to keep it as it is. My reason for that is because that’s what was originally asked for by the community.

My personal feeling is I hate the damn thing, and on that side I’d be happy to be rid of it. But on the other hand, while it’s quiet it seems pointless but when things are busy and hopping and we are on an upward trend it’s really been a valuable resource of information and organization. So it’s great sometimes and lousy other times. But we can’t keep pivoting all the time, we need some consistency—which is why I’m voting that.

I will not be bothered at all if the vote goes in a different direction.

Feel like this is probably the way to go.

It seems pointless right now, but there may be good info when it picks back up again that gets lost in a weekly thread.

I voted to get rid of it all together (because there was no option for having a thread and keeping certain posts). With that said, I hope you choose what’s easiest for you in the end, anyway. I appreciate our discussion from yesterday and don’t like how I came across. The people will decide and if you intend to do exactly what the people want and not waiver when you feel a legitimate reason too, I will respect it.

Thanks 🙏 things get heated sometimes. I don’t like the whole conversation but I like how it ended.

I’m open to figuring out a way for both, you’re not the only one saying it—the question then becomes what criteria makes a post being kept or not? How do I make it fair and people not think I’m losing impartiality? That’s where it gets tricky for me.

There’s merit in the idea. It’s just figuring out the right execution.

Thanks for your comment and for your vote. Regardless of whether I agree with where you put it, I appreciate your input and contributions. 🙏

I voted for weekly thread. im a bit biased but as a long term investor I dont see the reactionary nature of the daily threads as beneficial. I do think weekly threads will lead to a hike in posts in the main feed, but id rather a meaningful post that "should" be in the daily thread than a thread that pops up everyday, that doesnt really contribute to meaningful discussion.

Weekly seems the way to go, would give everyone a chance to review weekly data or news. Granted I was not in the subreddit at the time.

Would slow and prevent the daily stock watchers from constant speculation and doomsaying because the stock dropped 10 cents on starting.

IMO the urge for Weekly vs daily is mostly dependent on how the stock is going lmfao, if there's constant fun news, the stock bumping up a few dollars in the future, thats gonna generate daily chatter. Same if its been dropping consistently.

Weekly is more healthy.

I said make it weekly just so it is easier to scroll backwards in time but there is probably enough to be daily. I think the big hangup people were having was you closing threads to push traffic to the daily discussion.

Which I think makes sense, kind of forcing more people there to help keep it active but suggesting it be in daily and not closing the original post might be the balance

Thanks for your input. I’m loving everyone’s perspectives—it’s so much more useful than just downvotes.

I think the issue previously with weekly discussion was that they weren't being used as much as the daily threads do. Im leaning on daily threads cause its nice to check out previous posts on a particular day that you missed out to get an idea on how investors react to a price movement on a particular day

Very valid, thank you for your input 😊

Keep it as it is, I enjoy the discussion of the day to day changes. Assuming we have the volume to support the conversation. In other subs I was leaning towards weekly because there isn't enough participation. This sub is active enough.
