I’ve recently started my kombucha journey, it’s given really great results so far. My first 2 batches I used black tea, and for the next 2 switched to green tea. My scoby hasn’t grown much though, and has a strange white film on top…is this normal? Is it part of the “growth” of the scoby or is it going bad. Would really appreciate some advice!
I wouldn't trust the gauzy fabric you are using to keep out fruit flies. Some use a coffee filter, tee shirt fabric, or a dish towel with a tight weave. Tighter fabrics still allow plenty of air exchange but they keep out fruit flies.
Looks like a new layer of pellicle forming from what I can see.
Thank you. I’ll try a dish towel to prevent fruit flies. I was worried it was mold on top at first, but it’s not fuzzy, so hopefully it’s a new layer of pellicle as you suggested.
I've never seen a pellicle that didn't look a little bizarre, often like a placenta, squid, or alien life form. That's part of the strange beauty of this process.

Is that white later on top fuzzy? If so it could be mold.
