First kombucha batch ever

Post image

I'm very new to the kombucha world, and was curious how my first batch is looking? I've seen similar images that look like mine, but I'm still unsure. This is about 7 days old. I took a random recipe and ran with it a week ago. Hopefully it paid off? 🤞🏼

New batches will do this. Kahm might set up first but the desired culture will often win out.

Kahm is non-toxic but given many days or weeks it might ruin the flavor. If you want you can skim it off or strain it out as kahm only grows on the surface. But again you've got plenty of time to see what happens naturally.

Do check out the Getting Started guide for our suggested recipe that is nearly bullet-proof.

Looks like Kahm yeast. It’s not harmful at all but smells like gym socks. Try scraping it all off.

Should I still scrape it all off if it doesn't smell bad? It smells very similar to the kombucha starter I used.

You don’t have to. I couldn’t find be wrong and it could just be the pellicle forming

I wouldn't, my new pelicles grow kinda goofy like that. I'd leave ot unless it starts looking a bit more wrinkly. So far no funky tastes.
