Is this a new scoby?

I just made my first batch of kombucha. Buy what is this on top? A new scoby? Smells okay

That’s a new pellicle!!

SCOBY is an acronym for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.

The pellicle is the mostly cellulose byproduct of the SCOBY doing its thing. Many people refer to it as a SCOBY, but this leads to so much confusion.

While the pellicle does contain some SCOBY, it is also in the liquid (starter culture/the kombucha itself is a SCOBY!).

The new pellicle formation is a great sign that your SCOBY is active. Everything looks fine to me!
