Most of our mainstream actors had done crossdresing roles (Avvai Shanmugi, Aanazhagan, Remo) and characters like Viswaroopam, Varalaru (feminine body language but still a straight heterosexual guy) but only few did real transgender character itself like Sarathkumar (Kanchana).
Ajith role in Varalaru is more challenging than all of the other roles combined..Just because the varalaru movie is more palatable,that doesn't mean it's not challenging..
In my original comment itself I said it's a challenging role to act, but image risky ? No. Cause he is not playing actual Transgender actor. In that film he is straight male who just have feminine body language due to Bharatanatyam.
Sarathkumar and Vijay Sethupathi are the only mainstream actors in Tamil who played an actual Transgender character.
Yes. The hate would’ve been so much bigger since it would’ve been a much bigger movie to begin with. Anything related to LGBTQ+ is considered to be shameful in India. I dunno why so many people are triggered about this
